*In a sentence:* Aamir Khan makes engineering look fun, though we would still appreciate an earlier finish

> Aamir Khan makes this college comedy funny and affecting, despite a slow start and an excess of helpful advice. Rajkumar Hirani’s faith in friendship carries it through, though the editing and music can be needlessly insistent.

## Synopsis

Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (R. Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) are three college friends facing the pressures of higher education in India. Rancho is an inventive engineering student whose approach to learning raises questions about what their education is meant to achieve. As the friends work out what they want from their lives, their encouragement of one another becomes part of that process. Rajkumar Hirani directs this comedy-drama about study, friendship and finding a direction of one’s own, with Kareena Kapoor Khan as Pia, Boman Irani as Viru and Omi Vaidya as Chatur.

## Review

*3 Idiots* is a funny, generous college comedy that makes its case for a less punishing education system at rather greater length than it needs. Rajkumar Hirani wants the laughter to make that case approachable, and for much of the film it does. The friendship between Rancho, Farhan and Raju gives the discussion of learning and ambition a reason to matter beyond the classroom. At 171 minutes, though, the film grants itself considerably more time than its fairly straightforward advice requires.

Aamir Khan is the principal reason to stay with it. As Rancho, the inventive engineering student, he makes an enthusiasm for learning seem attractive without requiring us to share the enthusiasm for engineering. His confidence can make the character seem too conveniently equipped to demonstrate the film’s point; we are seldom left in much doubt about whose attitude Hirani favours. But Khan is funny enough to keep the instruction entertaining, and warm enough to make his influence on the friendship credible.

R. Madhavan’s Farhan and Sharman Joshi’s Raju matter because this advice has to mean something to people other than the man dispensing it. The supporting performances are less consistently assured than Khan’s, but the friendship remains convincing enough to carry the serious passages. We were moved by the friends’ encouragement of one another: their willingness to take one another’s hopes seriously makes the educational pressure feel personal. Hirani allows that affection to be expressed plainly, without treating kindness as an embarrassment.

C.K. Muraleedharan’s photography makes the college feel like a place where friendship can flourish, which matters in a film so concerned with what education gets wrong. Production designers Rajnish Hedao and Sumit Basu give the student setting enough credibility to support the serious passages without making the comedy seem out of place. Their work is useful and unobtrusive, leaving the actors to hold our attention. The surroundings persuade us that these people could spend time together, even when the writing makes their conversations sound suspiciously instructive.

The screenplay is less disciplined. Abhijat Joshi, Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra give the film a clear and worthwhile concern, but spend too long getting it moving and too often underline what the friendship has already made clear. Hirani also edits, and the jumps in time interrupt the early momentum when we are still finding our way into the characters. A sharper cut would have helped both the jokes and the serious material; the slow opening asks for patience before the film has earned much of it.

The music by Shantanu Moitra, Sanjay Wandrekar and Atul Raninga adds to the unevenness. Its insistence can make an emotional passage feel less spontaneous, and the shifts between comedy and earnestness are sometimes pushed too hard. We do not need a college comedy to be restrained, and the film’s willingness to be openly sentimental is often a virtue. We do need it to recognise when the actors have already done enough, particularly when Khan can make the point without further help.

College comedy offers plenty of opportunities for easy mockery, so Hirani’s interest in helping these students grow is welcome. He takes their hopes seriously, even when he is making their behaviour funny, and that gives the friendship some weight. This is worth an evening for anyone fond of expansive, sentimental comedy, provided repeated advice does not bring back too many unwelcome classroom memories. Allow it the full evening; an early alarm the following morning would be a mistake.

## Straight answers

**Is 3 Idiots worth watching?**

*3 Idiots* is worth watching for anyone fond of expansive, openly sentimental college comedy, and we scored it 78. Aamir Khan makes an enthusiasm for learning attractive and funny, and the friendship between the three students gives the film real warmth. It runs 171 minutes, starts slowly and repeats its advice about education more often than it needs to.

**How long is 3 Idiots, and what is it rated?**

*3 Idiots* runs 2h 51m and is rated PG-13 by the MPA in the US. It is a drama and comedy film.

**Where can I watch 3 Idiots in the US?**

*3 Idiots* is not on any streaming or rental service in the US at the moment. It is available in 1 other country; change your country at the top of the page to see where. Availability is checked daily.

**How violent or frightening is 3 Idiots, and is it suitable for children?**

*3 Idiots* carries a UK 12A certificate and is a college comedy-drama about study, friendship and ambition rather than a violent or frightening film. The serious passages concern the pressure students are put under, and the film is openly sentimental about it. Younger children may find the length and the talk of exams and careers more of a trial than anything on screen.

**How does 3 Idiots compare to Breaking Away?**

*3 Idiots* and [*Breaking Away*](https://film.one/film/breaking-away) are both warm comedies about young friends working out their futures, but the earlier film is the tighter and plainer of the two. Peter Yates keeps his story lean and lets class pressure speak for itself; Rajkumar Hirani runs nearly three hours and underlines his message. Choose *3 Idiots* for exuberance and song, *Breaking Away* for economy and two of the best screen parents we know.

**Is 3 Idiots based on a true story or a book?**

*3 Idiots* is based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat, not on a true story. Our review does not assess how closely Rajkumar Hirani and his co-writers follow the book, so we make no claim about its faithfulness. You do not need to have read it: the film states its case about education clearly, and more than once, so nothing is left for the source to explain.

**What should I watch after 3 Idiots?**

After *3 Idiots*, try [*Breaking Away*](https://film.one/film/breaking-away) (1979, Fi1m 86): Young friends work out their futures, with class pressure and a welcome sense of humour. Then [*The Holdovers*](https://film.one/film/the-holdovers) (2023, Fi1m 81): An academic setting, awkward companionship and sentiment tempered by some properly sour humour.

- **Los Angeles Times**, Robert Abele (90/100, inferred): The critic praises director Rajkumar Hirani’s coming-of-age epic for its entertaining toggle between the trio’s engineering school years and their later fortunes, along with its culturally resonant message about following one’s passion. It notes the film’s mix of genres and the irresistible joie de vivre embodied by Aamir Khan’s performance and the mantra “All is well.” [Read](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2010-jan-29-la-et-capsules29-2010jan29-story.html)
- **Time Out**, Anil Sinanan (4/5): A treat for discerning Bollywood fans: a comedy one can laugh with rather than at. It addresses the possible failure of higher education in contemporary India via Hirani’s light-hearted touch, though it is overlong. [Read](https://www.timeout.com/movies/3-idiots)
- **Variety**, Derek Elley (75/100, inferred): A comedy about three college buddies that doesn’t let its more serious theme of self-actualization get in the way of the entertainment, “3 Idiots” takes a while to lay out its game plan but pays off emotionally in its second half. Quality mainstream item from producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and helmer Rajkumar Hirani comes laden with must-see smarts, especially super-choosy star Aamir Khan. - **The Hollywood Reporter** (65/100, inferred): The film is dominated by Aamir Khan's charismatic performance as an inventive engineering student, and it effectively conveys a message about the value of friends who encourage personal growth. However, it suffers from a slow start, jarring soundtrack, clumsy time jumps, and uneven supporting performances.
