*In a sentence:* Josh Brolin turns up to a superhero gathering and makes all the jokes sound nervous

> The Russos make a crowded superhero gathering exciting enough to justify most of the noise. Josh Brolin gives it a formidable adversary, though anyone arriving without an attachment to these heroes has considerable catching up to do.

## Synopsis

Thanos (Josh Brolin) poses a threat that draws superheroes from across space into the same conflict. Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) fights alongside Peter Parker / Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), while Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) are also caught up in the struggle. Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) has a personal connection to the adversary they face. As the heroes meet and fight in changing combinations, their separate adventures become part of the same confrontation.

## Review

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have made a crowded, forceful superhero adventure that rewards familiarity and does little to encourage anyone starting here. *Avengers: Infinity War* is good at the difficult business of keeping a large cast busy without making every encounter feel like a roll call. Its greater achievement is giving that gathering an adversary who can hold our attention without another hero arriving to help. The pace sometimes means that a favourite character has barely arrived before we are sent off to join somebody else.

Josh Brolin’s Thanos gives the film someone to follow through all the changes of company. Brolin makes the villain’s conviction frightening, and gives his feelings enough weight to keep us watching between the fights. The attention paid to Thanos and Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora makes their conflict matter more than another battle could. There is a danger of treating a villain’s sincerity as proof that he has a point, but the performance lets us understand his feelings without requiring us to accept his reasoning.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely’s screenplay gets useful friction from putting these heroes in one another’s company. Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange both suggest men accustomed to having the cleverest answer, while Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has far less dignity to defend. We laughed when Spider-Man met Doctor Strange; Holland makes the encounter awkward in a way that the surrounding displays of power cannot tidy up. The humour comes from the actors finding different ways to occupy the same scene, rather than simply taking turns at a microphone.

Trent Opaloch’s cinematography gives the cosmic vistas room to register, and Charles Wood’s production design helps the shifting settings feel large enough for the assembled company. Those wider views are welcome in a film so full of faces and fighting. The action is less distinctive to look at: the excitement of an encounter often depends on recognising who has entered it. The directors keep the spectacle moving, but too rarely find an image as interesting as the people within it.

Editors Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt keep the changes of company brisk, usually moving on before a conversation can settle into another round of greetings. Their cutting gives the separate strands a shared urgency, though it also limits the time available for anyone to absorb what has happened. Alan Silvestri’s score supplies the grandeur needed to make this gathering feel consequential. The music is effective, even when it is doing some of the emotional work that a less hurried scene might have managed for itself.

The cost is clearest among the heroes with less to say. Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers and Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff have the presence to hold a scene, but the writing offers them little room to develop one. There is pleasure in recognising them, and the Russos rely on that pleasure heavily. For an ensemble adventure, this is an unusually large amount of character work to leave to earlier films. Anyone who does not already care about these people is expected to begin caring on sight.

We recommend it to anyone already invested in these heroes, with a warning that some favourites have little to do. Set aside the full 149 minutes; the constant changes of company make it a poor film to watch with half an eye. There is enough wit and menace to repay that attention. Anyone needing introductions should begin elsewhere.

## What the critics say

Most critics respond warmly to Avengers: Infinity War, praising its handling of a crowded cast and its ability to keep humour, action and darker emotions in play. The character pairings and banter draw approval, as do the scale of the battles and the cosmic settings. Praise clusters most consistently around Thanos, with Josh Brolin’s performance giving the spectacle a strong centre. Several reviews find more emotional weight here than they expect from such a large ensemble blockbuster.

The reservations concern coherence, depth and dependence on the wider franchise, and the spread is wide despite the positive lean. The New York Times finds it effective within Marvel’s continuing story but barely intelligible on its own. Collider enjoys the crossovers while finding the character arcs and emotions thin. The New Yorker is the sharpest dissenter, seeing disconnected fights, jokes and bonding where admirers find confident orchestration.

## Straight answers

**Is Avengers: Infinity War worth watching?**

*Avengers: Infinity War* is worth watching for anyone already attached to these heroes, and we scored it 77. Josh Brolin's Thanos gives the crowded gathering an adversary who holds attention between the fights, and the cast find real friction in one another's company. Some favourites, Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff among them, have little to do, and it wants your full attention for 149 minutes.

**How long is Avengers: Infinity War, and what is it rated?**

*Avengers: Infinity War* runs 2h 29m and is rated 12 by the PISF in Poland. It is an adventure and action film.

**Where can I watch Avengers: Infinity War in Poland?**

*Avengers: Infinity War* is streaming on Disney+ in Poland, and it is also available to rent from Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV from zł 9.99. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How does Avengers: Infinity War compare to Avengers: Age of Ultron?**

*Avengers: Infinity War* is the more exciting of the two, and its villain is the stronger reason to watch. *Age of Ultron* is funnier and has lovelier quiet stretches, but its fighting drags on well past the point of interest, while the Russos keep their spectacle moving. Choose the earlier film for Whedon's jokes and the later one for menace and pace.

**Do you need to have seen the other Marvel Cinematic Universe films before Avengers: Infinity War?**

*Avengers: Infinity War* is not a good place to start; it leaves an unusual amount of character work to earlier films and expects you to care about its heroes on sight. Newcomers will follow the plot, since Thanos gives everyone a single clear enemy, but the humour and the emotional weight depend on recognising who has just walked in. Anyone needing introductions should begin elsewhere in the series.

- **The New York Times**, A.O. Scott (70/100, inferred): Considered on its own the movie makes little sense and shouldn’t really be thought of as a movie at all, but as a chunk of the Marvel Cinematic Universe it works as the first half of a finale with intimations of grief and terror. The final act brings a chill, darkness and hush that feel new to this universe. [Read](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/24/movies/avengers-infinity-war-review.html)
- **The New Yorker**, Anthony Lane (30/100, inferred): The all-star spectacle suffers from uneasy bonhomie and feels like listening to two and a half hours of Tin Machine, resulting in a heap of broken images rather than a coherent movie. The standout element is the emotional depth given to Thanos and his relationship with Gamora. [Read](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/avengers-infinity-war-review-1105484/)
- **Total Film**: The review calls the film bold, ballsy, satisfying and dramatic, noting it is well worth the wait as an enormous blockbuster event that retains scale, excitement and humour while going to places most tentpoles would not. Thanos is highlighted as a strong throughline and protagonist. [Read](https://www.gamesradar.com/avengers-infinity-war-review/)
- **Den of Geek**, Don Kaye (4/5): The film delivers on a decade of MCU buildup in a very big way and ranks among the best Marvel movies by finally raising the stakes with real loss and consequences. It singles out Thanos, portrayed with complexity and tragedy by Josh Brolin, as the standout element that solves the franchise's villain problem. [Read](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/avengers-infinity-war-review/)
- **Collider**, Matt Goldberg (B-): The film delivers fun crossovers and banter among the massive cast but feels hollow, lacking emotional depth or meaningful character arcs amid its epic scale. It singles out Thanos for praise as a credible and sympathetic villain despite his outlandish goals. [Read](https://collider.com/infinity-war-review/)
- **The Ringer**, Sean Fennessey (65/100, inferred): Infinity War is an entertaining, competently made blockbuster with strong set pieces and a compelling Thanos, but its stakes feel undermined by the certainty of future resurrections and the lack of finality. It singles out the meaningless consequences of death and sacrifice in a franchise built on continuity. [Read](https://www.theringer.com/2018/04/27/movies/avengers-infinity-war-review)
- **Deadline**, Pete Hammond: The critic finds it one of the best and most surprising Marvel movies, praising its ambitious mashup of characters, heavy themes on good vs. evil, and a sophisticated villain in Thanos. - **The Wrap**: The film is packed with characters, incident and fan service but functions mainly as setup for a sequel, with strong ensemble work and action offset by a somewhat bland Thanos. [Read](https://www.thewrap.com/avengers-infinity-war-film-review-marvel-mcu/)
