*In a sentence:* Even a video-game character cannot escape an argument about who owns what

> Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer make Shawn Levy’s video-game comedy agreeable company, despite its overcomplicated plot. The jokes land often enough, but the explanations and franchise references keep getting in their way.

## Synopsis

Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a background character in a video game, sharing its repeated routines with Buddy (Lil Rel Howery). He begins to want more than the part he has been given. Millie Rusk (Jodie Comer), also known inside the game as Molotovgirl, connects his world to the people outside it. There, Keys (Joe Keery) and gaming-company owner Antwan (Taika Waititi) are involved in a dispute over its creation. Guy’s search for a life of his own runs into programmed behaviour and commercial interests, as the people playing the game and those controlling it pursue their own plans.

## Review

Shawn Levy’s *Free Guy* is pleasant company, provided we do not ask too much of its plot. The idea of giving a video-game background character a life of his own is a good starting point for a comedy, and the film has enough warmth to make us care. Its difficulty is knowing what to do once that concern has been established. At 115 minutes, it spends too long explaining the business outside the game and too little exploring the people inside it.

Ryan Reynolds plays Guy with a sweetness that suits his limited understanding of what surrounds him. The early routines of the game’s non-player characters give that performance something precise to work against: their lives repeat, and the comedy comes from how readily they accept it. We laughed at those routines because the characters take their prescribed behaviour so seriously. Lil Rel Howery, as Buddy, gives him an agreeable comic partner, and their exchanges make the question of what these artificial lives are worth matter to us.

Jodie Comer is the stronger reason to stay interested as the story grows busier. Playing Millie Rusk and Molotovgirl, she gives the film both vulnerability and game-world confidence without making either seem a strain. She also has an easy connection with Joe Keery’s Keys, giving the real-world scenes some feeling when they threaten to become instructions. The film is more persuasive whenever it lets these actors talk without making them explain the next complication.

The early repetitions also give editor Dean Zimmerman the film’s cleanest comic rhythms. Once there is more action and more explanation to accommodate, the pace remains quick but the jokes have less room. George Richmond’s photography and Ethan Tobman’s production design make the game world readily understandable, although neither gives it much strangeness beyond the premise. We can follow the spectacle without finding much to look at twice. Christophe Beck’s music helps the sentimental passages along, but the actors are doing most of the work there.

Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn’s screenplay keeps interrupting the appealing business of Guy discovering possibilities with a corporate-property dispute. That material needs clarity and comic bite, and too often settles for another explanation. Taika Waititi’s Antwan, the gaming-company owner, supplies plenty of emphasis without making the interruptions more interesting. The performance is deliberately broad, but its insistence becomes wearing because it keeps making much the same point about the man.

The other disappointment is how cautiously the film handles its invitation to think for ourselves. Its familiar franchise references are meant to be pleasures, yet they make the talk of originality harder to take seriously. A comedy about escaping a prescribed role can reasonably be expected to try a few less familiar moves. There is no need for a lecture about artificial intelligence, but the film raises questions it seems too busy to consider.

Still, the sweetness is welcome in a genre that can mistake constant wisecracking for humour. Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer give the film enough appeal to survive its muddled rules, although not enough to make those rules worth puzzling over afterwards. Choose it for the actors; the explanations will not improve with closer attention.

## What the critics say

The reviews lean towards qualified enjoyment, with most critics finding warmth and comic energy in Free Guy even when its story disappoints them. Praise clusters around Jodie Comer, whose performances give the gaming adventure emotional weight, while Ryan Reynolds’s sweetness and comic timing win substantial support. The accessible gaming humour, lively action and enthusiastic cast help make it an appealing crowd-pleaser for critics who acknowledge its uneven plotting.

The spread is wide, particularly over how much substance sits beneath the entertainment. Collider finds that the comedy balances gaming culture with larger existential themes; Slant Magazine argues that its appeals for originality and nonviolence are contradicted by familiar franchise material and violent spectacle. Elsewhere, reservations gather around the overstuffed plot, thin social commentary and distracting real-world storyline. Reynolds divides opinion too, with some finding charm where others see a shallow or overly familiar performance.

## Straight answers

**Is Free Guy worth watching?**

*Free Guy* is worth considering for Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer’s warmth and the video-game comedy, though its overcomplicated plot keeps our score at 67. We enjoy the jokes about background characters accepting their repetitive lives; the corporate dispute and franchise references interrupt the more appealing business of Guy discovering what else he might do.

**How long is Free Guy, and what is it rated?**

*Free Guy* runs 1h 55m. It is a comedy and adventure film.

**Where can I watch Free Guy in Türkiye?**

*Free Guy* is streaming on Disney+ in Türkiye. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Free Guy, and is it suitable for children?**

*Free Guy* has a UK 12A certificate, so its playful video-game premise should not be taken as a recommendation for all children. The film includes game-world action within a warm comic story, but the certificate calls for parental judgement with younger viewers. We would be cautious about choosing it for children who are sensitive to action.

**How does Free Guy compare to The Truman Show?**

*Free Guy* is the lighter, more straightforwardly agreeable comedy; we recommend [*The Truman Show*](https://film.one/film/the-truman-show) for sharper unease and greater emotional force. Both follow a cheerful man questioning his surroundings, but Guy’s discoveries compete with corporate explanations and franchise references. Peter Weir’s film makes the hurt beneath its premise harder to dismiss, despite making blame too easy to assign.

**What should I watch after Free Guy?**

After *Free Guy*, try [*The Truman Show*](https://film.one/film/the-truman-show) (1998, Fi1m 88): Another cheerful man questions his surroundings, with sharper unease beneath the comedy. Then [*The Purple Rose of Cairo*](https://film.one/film/the-purple-rose-of-cairo) (1985, Fi1m 84): For a more rueful romance between ordinary life and an invented person; and [*Wreck-It Ralph*](https://film.one/film/wreck-it-ralph) (2012, Fi1m 70): Game-world outsiders get clearer rules, better jokes and a friendship worth believing.
