*In a sentence:* Space is large enough for alien civilisations, but apparently not for anyone else to get the last word

> James Gunn’s space adventure is funny enough to forgive its clutter. Chris Pratt leads a well-matched cast, and the team’s arguments make the familiar superhero business enjoyable, though the villains could use some of their personality.

## Synopsis

Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) becomes part of an unlikely group of space adventurers alongside Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). They travel through alien worlds, facing danger while arguing among themselves. James Gunn directs a science-fiction adventure that mixes superhero action with comedy and older pop songs. Lee Pace plays Ronan, with Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta and Karen Gillan as Nebula. The group’s members must find a way to act together despite their competing personalities.

## Review

*Guardians of the Galaxy* is a good-natured space adventure that understands the pleasure of watching difficult people try to work together. Gunn, writing with Nicole Perlman, gives the central group plenty of opportunities to irritate one another and enough charm to make us stay for the argument. We recommend it, with a warning about the stretches spent explaining its cosmic business. Gunn makes the time spent together enjoyable before asking us to care about the larger adventure.

Chris Pratt gives Peter Quill an appealingly effortful confidence. He lets us notice the work involved in being charming, which stops the performance becoming a demand for affection. Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora gives the ensemble a firmer presence when the chatter threatens to become compulsory. Dave Bautista’s Drax is the comic surprise, and we laughed hardest at the seriousness Bautista brings to the jokes. He seems unwilling to let the absurdity of the company affect his own standards.

Bradley Cooper, voicing Rocket, gives the comedy a sharper, more impatient sound. Vin Diesel’s voice work as Groot makes a gentler contribution, and the contrast helps the group feel like a collection of personalities rather than five variations on one joke. Gunn also allows their vulnerability to show without stopping the adventure for a lesson in friendship. Those quieter passages matter: without them, spending this long with people who keep needling one another could become an obligation.

Ben Davis’s cinematography gives the alien landscapes colour without making everything equally insistent. Charles Wood’s production design supplies settings worth examining, even when the dialogue is keeping us busy with explanations. The images can be crowded, but the action generally remains readable. Editors Hughes Winborne, Fred Raskin and Craig Wood keep individual characters clear within the commotion. We can follow what people are doing, which gives the jokes room to work during the action.

Tyler Bates’s score keeps the adventure moving, though it is not the music we remember afterwards. The older pop songs have more personality, and their familiarity gives the space travel an ordinary human connection. They also help the emotional passages without announcing that the film has become serious. Gunn’s use of music is one of the reasons the warmth feels earned, even when the script is eager to get to the next wisecrack.

Lee Pace’s Ronan is less fortunate. Gunn and Perlman give the villains too little personality, leaving Pace with limited room to make an impression beside the central group. At 121 minutes, the film also has more explanation than this light adventure needs, and its talk of larger matters is seldom as engaging as its petty disagreements. The increasingly noisy action becomes tiring. By the time it reaches for a large-scale climax, we have already seen how much it can achieve by letting its cast irritate one another.

Space opera asks us to accept a great deal of unfamiliar scenery, and comedy helps us settle into it. Gunn understands the usefulness of having companions whose reactions are worth watching while we find our bearings. The superhero routine remains visible, but there is enough pleasure in the ensemble to make another trip through it welcome. Watch it with someone who does not require everyone on screen to behave sensibly.

*Fi1m score 80, published 15 September 2026.*

## What the critics say

Most critics welcome Guardians of the Galaxy as a funny, character-led space adventure, with James Gunn’s irreverent humour giving familiar Marvel material a welcome looseness. Praise clusters around the ensemble’s chemistry: Chris Pratt’s charm, Dave Bautista’s comic delivery as Drax and Bradley Cooper’s Rocket receive particular attention. The reviews also credit the pop soundtrack with supporting the emotional scenes, while the creature designs, colourful settings and energetic action help make the adventure distinctive.

Reservations centre on the more familiar machinery: heavy exposition, thin plotting, underdeveloped villains and an overblown finale. Several otherwise favourable reviews find the constant jokes tiring or liable to undercut moments that need seriousness. The spread is largely positive, with one marked dissent: The Independent finds the film superficial and half-hearted, arguing that its facetiousness weakens the engaging performances and spectacle. Most critics treat those tendencies as manageable flaws rather than reasons to reject it.

## Straight answers

**Is Guardians of the Galaxy worth watching?**

*Guardians of the Galaxy* is worth watching for anyone who enjoys a space adventure carried by its cast rather than its plot, and we scored it 80. James Gunn's film is at its best when the five leads are bickering, and weakest when it stops to explain its cosmic business or lets the villains take over. Watch it with someone who does not need everyone on screen to behave sensibly.

**How long is Guardians of the Galaxy, and what is it rated?**

*Guardians of the Galaxy* runs 2h 01m. It is an action and science fiction film.

**Where can I watch Guardians of the Galaxy in South Africa?**

*Guardians of the Galaxy* is available to rent from Apple TV from R34.99. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Guardians of the Galaxy, and is it suitable for children?**

*Guardians of the Galaxy* is a 12A, and its violence is the noisy, largely bloodless kind found in most superhero films. Our review notes that the action grows loud and tiring towards the climax, and there is a good deal of wisecracking that younger children may not follow, but nothing we found frightening. It suits older children and teenagers; the very young may find the length and the explanations a trial.

**How does Guardians of the Galaxy compare to The Fifth Element?**

*Guardians of the Galaxy* is the warmer and better-organised of the two, while [*The Fifth Element*](https://film.one/film/the-fifth-element) is the more unruly and the better-dressed. Gunn's film gets its pleasure from five personalities irritating one another; Luc Besson's comes from the sheer look of his comic-strip future, with a thinner story and Chris Tucker as an acquired taste. Choose Gunn for company, Besson for scenery.

**What should I watch after Guardians of the Galaxy?**

After *Guardians of the Galaxy*, try [*The Fifth Element*](https://film.one/film/the-fifth-element) (1997, Fi1m 73): For more unruly science fiction, crowded alien settings and cheerful disregard for restraint. Then [*Time Bandits*](https://film.one/film/time-bandits) (1981, Fi1m 80): An argumentative travelling company, with stranger destinations and a less reassuring outlook.
