*In a sentence:* A dinosaur heist in which the dinosaurs, reasonably enough, object to being the loot

> Gareth Edwards stages dinosaurs with more patience and scale than the series has managed in years, and two long sequences are close to wonderful. David Koepp’s script sends people we barely know on an errand that runs out before the film does.

## Synopsis

Dinosaurs have not thrived in the world beyond their parks, and the last of the big ones live on and around an equatorial island nobody visits. Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), on behalf of a pharmaceutical company, needs blood from three of them, one from land, one from the sea and one from the air, and hires Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), a covert operator, to fetch it. She recruits boat captain Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), who has never seen a living dinosaur. On the way they rescue the Delgado family (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, Audrina Miranda) and a boyfriend (David Iacono) after their yacht is attacked. Directed by Gareth Edwards from a script by David Koepp; 134 minutes, 12A.

## Review

Seven films in, the series has hired a director who likes looking at large animals. Gareth Edwards made *Monsters* (2010), *Godzilla* (2014) and *Rogue One* (2016), and in each the camera sits low and waits for something enormous to fill the sky. Here he has a whole island of enormous things and a script by David Koepp, who wrote the first [*Jurassic Park*](https://film.one/film/jurassic-park) in 1993. The dinosaurs are the best the series has had in years. The people are an errand.

The errand is this. A pharmaceutical man, Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), needs blood from three of the biggest animals left alive, one on land, one at sea and one in the air, and he hires Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) to get it. She brings a boat captain, Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), and a palaeontologist, Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), who has never seen a living specimen and would like to before the funding runs out. On the way they pick up the Delgados, a father (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), two daughters (Luna Blaise, Audrina Miranda) and a boyfriend (David Iacono), whose sailing holiday has met something with a great many teeth. Three samples, three set pieces, 134 minutes.

Two of those set pieces are as good as anything the series has done since the first film. The louder one is the river: an inflatable raft, a fast current, a family who cannot make much noise, and a tyrannosaur that has decided to come in after them. Edwards holds on the water and lets the thing arrive in its own time. Jabez Olssen cuts it slowly, with no more shots than the sequence needs, and John Mathieson keeps the light flat and grey so the animal is simply there, not lit for its close-up. We were tense in a way we had stopped expecting from a dinosaur film, and we kept looking for the join between the digital animal and the real water and never found it.

The quieter one is a valley. Loomis stands at the edge of it and watches a herd of long-necked animals move through the morning, and Alexandre Desplat, who has John Williams’s themes to hand, lets the old one in softly rather than at full volume. It moved us more than we had thought a seventh film could. The reason, on reflection, is Bailey, who plays the awe rather than explaining it; his face does the work the earlier films handed to speeches.

Koepp has written the rest of the people as job descriptions. Zora is a mercenary with a loss she mentions once and the film forgets; Kincaid has a loss of his own, produced when a scene needs weight. Johansson is dry and capable and could do this in her sleep, and the part more or less asks her to. Ali is warm with little to be warm about. Friend plays Krebs as the company man, and you know his whole arc from his first sentence, which is not his fault. Only Loomis is written with any pleasure, and it shows.

There is also the matter of the title, which promises a new era and delivers a mutant. The film opens in an old laboratory where an experiment has gone wrong, and what came of it we will leave the film to show you. James Clyne’s rotting station, jungle through every window, is the best thing about that whole strand. In the final stretch we were checking our watch, and a little cross about it, because the river had shown us the film knew better.

Set against the series, this is a clear improvement in one department. The last few entries had stopped being interested in the animals as animals; Edwards is interested in almost nothing else, and it shows in every wide shot. What he has not been given is anyone to stand in front of them worth caring about, and Koepp, of all people, ought to know that the first film worked because it had both.

See it on the largest screen you can find, for the river and the valley, and forgive it the last half hour. At home it shrinks to a competent adventure with two good bits, which is not the worst way to spend 134 minutes. It carries a 12A, and the tyrannosaur earns it.

*Fi1m score 63, published 9 September 2026.*

## What the critics say

The reviews split widely on Jurassic World Rebirth, and the split runs along a clear line. Almost everyone agrees that Gareth Edwards can stage a dinosaur: the set pieces draw praise even from critics who dislike the film, with a river sequence and a quieter scene of the animals at rest singled out more than once. The cast is the other point of agreement, particularly Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, whose pairing several reviewers find more appealing than the material around it.

The reservations cluster on the writing. Thin characters, a plot that recycles earlier entries and a feeling that the franchise has run out of wonder recur across the mixed and negative notices. The Telegraph is the outlier at the top, calling it the best entry since the original; the Financial Times and Vulture sit at the bottom, arguing the film manages to make dinosaur carnage dull. Most critics land between: well-made, well-acted, not especially necessary.

## Straight answers

**Is Jurassic World Rebirth worth watching?**

*Jurassic World Rebirth* is worth watching for anyone who wants to see dinosaurs staged with patience and scale, and we scored it 63. Two long sequences, a river chase and a valley at dawn, are close to wonderful, but the people around them are thinly written and the last half hour drags. See it on a big screen or not at all.

**How long is Jurassic World Rebirth, and what is it rated?**

*Jurassic World Rebirth* runs 2h 14m and is rated PG-13 by the MPA in the US. It is a science fiction and adventure film.

**Where can I watch Jurassic World Rebirth in the US?**

*Jurassic World Rebirth* is streaming on Netflix in the US, and it is also available to rent from Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV from $3.99. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Jurassic World Rebirth, and is it suitable for children?**

*Jurassic World Rebirth* carries a 12A certificate, and in our view the tyrannosaur earns it. The river sequence, with a family in a raft being hunted through fast water, is sustained and tense rather than gory, and a yacht attack early on sets the tone. Older children who enjoyed the earlier films will manage; younger or nervous ones may find the long chases too much.

**How does Jurassic World Rebirth compare to Jurassic World Dominion?**

*Jurassic World Rebirth* is the better film, mainly because Gareth Edwards is interested in the dinosaurs as animals and Colin Trevorrow, in [*Jurassic World Dominion*](https://film.one/film/jurassic-world-dominion), largely was not. Dominion has the pleasure of Neill, Dern and Goldblum together and little else; Rebirth has a new cast written as job descriptions but two set pieces that stand with the series' best.

**Do you need to have seen the other Jurassic Park films before Jurassic World Rebirth?**

*Jurassic World Rebirth* stands alone and needs no knowledge of the earlier films. It has an entirely new cast and a simple errand plot, and the only real callbacks are John Williams's themes woven through Alexandre Desplat's score. It is a reasonable place for a newcomer to start, though the original [*Jurassic Park*](https://film.one/film/jurassic-park) remains the better introduction.

**What should I watch after Jurassic World Rebirth?**

After *Jurassic World Rebirth*, try [*Jurassic Park*](https://film.one/film/jurassic-park) (1993, Fi1m 91): The one this keeps quoting, and it still has people worth eating. Then [*Jaws*](https://film.one/film/jaws) (1975, Fi1m 93): Spielberg’s original lesson in waiting for the animal to arrive; and [*Monsters*](https://film.one/film/monsters-vs-aliens) (2010, Fi1m 63): Edwards’ first film, two people and a border, and the creatures kept mostly offscreen.

**What order should I watch the Jurassic Park films in?**

Release order is the safe choice for Jurassic Park, and it is the order [our collection page](https://film.one/collections/jurassic-park) lists them in. *Jurassic World Rebirth* is the most recent of the 7 Jurassic Park titles on Fi1m; before it comes [*Jurassic World Dominion*](https://film.one/film/jurassic-world-dominion).
