*In a sentence:* A spy film so crowded that even the stars seem to be waiting for their turn

> Taron Egerton and Julianne Moore give this overlong spy comedy more charm than its plotting earns. The action has skill behind it, but the crowded cast and coarse jokes make it a wearying evening.

## Synopsis

Eggsy (Taron Egerton) faces the megalomaniac Poppy (Julianne Moore) in a spy adventure involving Harry Hart (Colin Firth) and Merlin (Mark Strong). Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) is another agent in the ensemble, alongside the cowboy Tequila (Channing Tatum). Princess Tilde (Hanna Alström), Ginger (Halle Berry) and Champ (Jeff Bridges) also feature as Eggsy contends with criminal ambition and political manoeuvring. The conflict plays out through secret-service work and violent encounters, with a large company of spies caught up in the plotting.

## Review

Matthew Vaughn’s *Kingsman: The Golden Circle* is a poor spy comedy that keeps finding ways to prolong a joke. At 141 minutes, it has enough time for its plentiful characters and still struggles to give them something worth doing. The ambition is understandable: make the action elaborate, keep the company agreeable and let the bad taste get a laugh. We can enjoy all three, but the director repeats them until the effort becomes tiring.

Taron Egerton gives Eggsy an alertness that makes us keep looking for a more involving story for him. He can hold our attention without another elaborate action sequence being arranged around him, which makes the shortage of development frustrating. Colin Firth and Mark Strong help, because the exchanges between the three have an ease the plot rarely manages. Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman have written plenty to occupy this cast; too little of it allows Eggsy to become more interesting.

Julianne Moore makes Poppy enjoyable through the physical comedy, committing herself to the absurdity without pausing to advertise the joke. We laughed at her performance, and then became irritated as the film kept asking her to repeat the same effect. That is a waste of an actor who can make this sort of foolishness seem worth the trouble. After a while, even Poppy stops being much fun.

The action is not lazily assembled, and that matters even when it becomes tiresome. George Richmond’s cinematography and Eddie Hamilton’s editing keep the fights quick and legible, but the relentless movement makes it difficult to feel that anything can hurt. The choreography offers plenty to watch, though our interest in the outcome keeps slipping. The editor maintains speed within individual sequences; the screenplay keeps supplying complications that delay the next useful encounter between characters.

Darren Gilford’s production design supplies welcome colour, giving the eye something to enjoy when the plotting starts to feel like work. Henry Jackman and Matthew Margeson drive the action with an emphatic score, which adds momentum but gives us little relief alongside the rapid cutting. These contributions are effective enough in isolation, yet the film becomes tiring when every department is working so hard to keep us excited.

The crude humour is harder to forgive than the length. The director treats an unpleasant idea as sufficient grounds for a joke, and too many of the violent gags stop there. A spy spoof needs some wit about its heroes’ appetites and the business they are in. Here, even the political plotting seems to make the story busier without giving the comedy much to work with.

The warmer reviews are understandable when the cast get a chance to work together. We cannot recommend 141 minutes on the strength of those exchanges, particularly when the film keeps interrupting them. Anyone coming solely for elaborate action may be more forgiving. For an evening’s entertainment, we would choose something less exhausting.

## What the critics say

Most critics find Kingsman: The Golden Circle an overstuffed sequel that struggles to recover its predecessor’s comic energy. Praise centres on the cast, particularly Julianne Moore’s gleeful villain and Elton John’s comic appearances, with several reviews also valuing Taron Egerton’s presence and the actors’ rapport. The action earns credit for its invention and choreography, even from some critics who find the surrounding story thin. Excessive length is a complaint shared by supporters and detractors.

The spread is wide, however, and the chief disagreement concerns whether the spectacle remains entertaining despite that excess. The Hollywood Reporter finds carefully crafted scenes and character-focused humour enough to sustain the fun; Variety finds the action weightless because the plot offers so little sense of stakes. Elsewhere, reservations cluster around crude jokes, underdeveloped characters and muddled politics. For the harsher reviews, the violence and repetition exhaust what charm the cast supplies.

## Straight answers

**Is Kingsman: The Golden Circle worth watching?**

*Kingsman: The Golden Circle* is hard to recommend despite its charming cast and skilfully assembled action; we score it 42 out of 100. Taron Egerton and Julianne Moore provide some pleasure, but the crowded plotting, repetitive jokes and 141-minute runtime make it wearying. Those coming solely for elaborate fights may be more forgiving.

**How long is Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and what is it rated?**

*Kingsman: The Golden Circle* runs 2h 21m. It is a crime and comedy film.

**Where can I watch Kingsman: The Golden Circle in Bulgaria?**

*Kingsman: The Golden Circle* is streaming on HBO Max and Disney+ in Bulgaria, and it is also available to rent from Apple TV from лв 2.99. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and is it suitable for children?**

*Kingsman: The Golden Circle* carries a UK 15 certificate and is unsuitable for children, with frequent violent encounters, violent gags and crude humour. We find the relentless action more tiring than frightening, though that does not make it gentle viewing; its coarse jokes and treatment of violence make it a poor choice for the squeamish.

**How does Kingsman: The Golden Circle compare to OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies?**

*Kingsman: The Golden Circle* offers elaborate action, but we recommend [*OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies*](https://film.one/film/oss-117-cairo-nest-of-spies) as the better spy comedy for its sharper focus on its hero’s complacency. The latter rebuilds a Fifties thriller around a fool, rather than crowding the screen with agents and complications. Its gags thin out late, but its comic purpose is clearer.
