*In a sentence:* Harvard appears willing to consider any difficult question except what to do with a woman in pink

> Reese Witherspoon makes this predictable comedy a pleasure, giving Elle Woods enough wit and determination to survive some indifferent jokes. Its affection for her is persuasive; the comic timing could be sharper.

## Synopsis

Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), a fashion-conscious sorority sister from Los Angeles, sets her sights on Harvard Law School. Entering its college hierarchy, she finds that her appearance influences how others judge her intelligence. She brings her knowledge and determination to a setting where the clothes she likes make her stand out. Robert Luketic directs this comedy about college status, personal ambition and the assumptions attached to appearances. Matthew Davis plays Warner Huntington III, alongside Selma Blair as Vivian Kensington, Victor Garber as Professor Callahan and Jennifer Coolidge as Paulette.

## Review

Reese Witherspoon makes *Legally Blonde* worth an evening, even when the jokes are doing the minimum. Director Robert Luketic takes a fashion-conscious sorority sister to Harvard Law School, where her taste in clothes gives everyone an excuse to underestimate her. The point is to watch her insist on being taken seriously without having to apologise for what she likes. It is a good-natured, uneven comedy, and its confidence in Elle is usually enough to keep us interested.

Witherspoon makes Elle’s enthusiasm credible because she never treats it as evidence of stupidity. There is quick thought in the performance, and a willingness to be ridiculous that never feels like an invitation to despise her. We laughed at the sight of her in pink in Harvard’s halls, then felt slightly ashamed of how readily we had joined in. Witherspoon makes the assumption that this woman cannot belong there seem mean, and gives us plenty of reason to want her to stay.

Anthony B. Richmond’s glossy cinematography suits a film so comfortable with its heroine’s interest in appearances. Costume designer Sophie de Rakoff uses pink to let us grasp the social problem before anyone explains it. Missy Stewart’s production design gives those clothes an academic setting to stand out against, so the joke remains clear even when the dialogue is less sharp. We understand immediately that Elle has entered a place with firm ideas about what a serious person ought to look like.

Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith’s screenplay is less reliable about finding comic situations to match her. The jokes about school and status have a clear target; elsewhere, too much depends on our liking Elle enough to accept a familiar bit of silliness. We usually do, although sweetness occasionally substitutes for a finished joke. Luketic also has trouble judging when a comic point has been made, allowing some passages to continue after the laugh has gone.

Editors Anita Brandt-Burgoyne and Garth Craven keep the simple story moving, even if the comic timing remains uneven. The 96-minute running time is sensible for material this light. Rolfe Kent’s score helps maintain the cheerful tone, but its encouragement sometimes makes a modest joke feel overstated. The music is more welcome when it supports Elle’s optimism, which Witherspoon has already made convincing without much assistance.

Most critics are less enthusiastic than we are, finding the familiar story too thin to support Witherspoon’s performance. We think they underestimate the pleasure of a fish-out-of-water comedy that allows its heroine to keep her tastes and her dignity. Making a fashionable woman pass an intelligence test for our amusement could have made for a dreary evening. The film’s affection for Elle matters: we want her taken seriously, and the predictable plotting does not cancel that feeling.

Anyone hoping for a pointed examination of privilege will have to supply a good deal of it themselves. Harvard provides a useful collection of social assumptions, but the film has limited interest in the institution once it has something to prove about Elle. Choose it for Witherspoon, and allow a few jokes to go unanswered.

## What the critics say

The consensus is mixed, with praise clustering around Reese Witherspoon rather than the screenplay. Most critics find her buoyancy, comic assurance and commitment to Elle Woods more persuasive than the story built around her. Several also value the film’s respect for Elle’s individuality and determination, while the supporting cast earns some approval. Even less enthusiastic reviews tend to find Witherspoon engaging, though they differ over how much she can rescue.

The main reservations concern formula, uneven humour and awkward pacing, with comparisons to Clueless often working against the film. The spread is substantial: Radio Times finds the silliness hilarious and Witherspoon perfectly cast, while The AV Club considers the comedy too predictable and insufficiently funny. Slant Magazine offers a revealing qualification, criticising the film’s derivativeness while crediting its treatment of Elle’s individualism. The disagreement is chiefly over whether the performance and character compensate for familiar plotting.

## Straight answers

**Is Legally Blonde worth watching?**

*Legally Blonde* is worth watching for Reese Witherspoon, whose Elle Woods keeps a predictable comedy lively, and we scored it 78. Its affection for its heroine carries it through some indifferent jokes and slack comic timing. Anyone hoping for a pointed examination of privilege will find the film more interested in Elle than in Harvard.

**How long is Legally Blonde, and what is it rated?**

*Legally Blonde* runs 1h 36m and is rated PG-13 by the MPA in the US. It is a comedy film.

**Where can I watch Legally Blonde in the US?**

*Legally Blonde* is streaming on HBO Max, Hulu and The Roku Channel in the US. It leaves HBO Max on 1 October. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Legally Blonde, and is it suitable for children?**

*Legally Blonde* is a good-natured comedy with no violence and nothing frightening in it; the UK 12 certificate reflects some adult humour rather than anything alarming. It suits teenagers and most families comfortably. Younger children may not follow the jokes about law school and social status, but there is nothing here to upset them.

**How does Legally Blonde compare to Clueless?**

*Legally Blonde* and [*Clueless*](https://film.one/film/clueless) are both comedies about fashionable women everyone underestimates, and *Clueless* is the sharper of the two. Amy Heckerling's ear for slang and social observation gives her film more wit, while *Legally Blonde* relies more heavily on Witherspoon's charm to cover thin jokes. Choose *Legally Blonde* for its heroine's determination and *Clueless* for the better laughs.

**Is Legally Blonde based on a true story or a book?**

*Legally Blonde* is based on a novel by Amanda Brown, not on a true story. The film's sorority sister at Harvard Law School is a fiction about appearances and assumptions rather than a dramatised case. Knowing the book is not necessary; the film explains its situation quickly and stands entirely on its own.

**What should I watch after Legally Blonde?**

After *Legally Blonde*, try [*Clueless*](https://film.one/film/clueless) (1995, Fi1m 84): Another underestimated fashion enthusiast, with sharper social observation and an equally generous heart. Then [*Working Girl*](https://film.one/film/working-girl) (1988, Fi1m 80): Workplace snobbery meets a determined woman unwilling to accept her assigned place; and [*Educating Rita*](https://film.one/film/educating-rita) (1983, Fi1m 71): A woman enters an academic world that cannot quite decide where she belongs.

- **Los Angeles Times**, Kenneth Turan: The film squanders its promising high-concept premise and Witherspoon's committed performance as the determined Elle Woods because it cannot figure out where to go after the setup and unravels with haphazard direction and a cockamamie murder-trial subplot. - **RogerEbert.com**, Roger Ebert: The film is a featherweight comedy that is impossible to dislike, though its appeal depends on affection for Reese Witherspoon, who carries the movie with sunshine and quick wit as the smart, fashion-obsessed Elle Woods. - **The New Yorker**, David Denby: The film starts with promise as a stylized, candied parody of the Cosmo-girl ethos and the indomitable spirit of a Bel Air princess but quickly subsides into trivial farce with a sitcom-obvious story. It is worth seeing only for Reese Witherspoon's brilliant performance as Elle Woods, a fighting spirit who is not afraid to be silly. - **The New York Times**, A. O. Scott: The movie is a fluffy, midlevel commercial comedy that offers occasional spontaneous laughter but is mostly a mishmash of hit-or-miss humor and uplifting moments, with Reese Witherspoon as the sharp, quick-witted star who elevates the material as the perky sorority sister Elle Woods. The character is somewhat incoherent and the film does not always know what to do with her, but Witherspoon makes Elle appealing and ridiculous in equal measure. - **Variety**, Todd McCarthy: The comedy gets a major boost from Reese Witherspoon's dazzling star turn as the effervescent Elle Woods, an L.A. Barbie who sets out to conquer Harvard Law School, proving she can be as smart as anyone. The mildly engaging silliness of the premise is never transformed into something more substantial, and the attempt at a fine-tuned Clueless-like tone is only sputteringly achieved. - **Eye for Film**, Angus Wolfe Murray (4/5): The critic calls it an uplifting, self-assertive comedy that reaffirms human qualities and praises its fresh take. Reese Witherspoon is singled out as irresistibly wonderful for bringing heart to Elle's optimism without sentimentality.
