*In a sentence:* New York gets twelve hours of legal premarital sex and still spends most of them being coy

> Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner make an appealing pair, but this timid romantic comedy cannot make its annual sex exemption funny enough to forget how grim it is. The chemistry deserves a less muddled film.

## Synopsis

Allie (Monica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner) are two New Yorkers looking for connection during an annual twelve-hour exemption from a ban on premarital sex. For this one night, the usual restriction is suspended and their search has a deadline. Their attempts to find someone unfold across the city, amid the complications of pursuing romance when the clock is running. Will Gluck directs this romantic comedy, written by Travis Braun. The cast also includes Maya Hawke as Malika, King Princess as Jacinta, Molly Ringwald as Linda and LeVar Burton as Rick.

## Review

*One Night Only* has an appealing couple and a premise it has not thought through. Will Gluck directs a romantic comedy about an annual twelve-hour suspension of a ban on premarital sex, with New Yorkers Allie and Owen trying to find connection while it lasts. Travis Braun’s screenplay treats that arrangement chiefly as a deadline for romantic mishaps. It is a large thing to ask us to accept before we can enjoy watching two people flirt.

Monica Barbaro plays Allie and Callum Turner plays Owen, and their attraction is the most persuasive thing here. There is enough ease between them to suggest that a film with fewer rules might have found plenty for them to do. Barbaro brings warmth to Allie’s search for connection, while Turner makes an agreeable partner in the business of looking interested and getting into difficulties. The pleasure of watching them together survives some dialogue and situations that do not deserve it.

The comedy occasionally catches up with the casting. We laughed at the daydream sequences, which briefly let sexual imagination into a film otherwise oddly nervous about sex. Gluck finds some freedom there, but Braun’s succession of complications too often feels like an obligation to keep the night busy. Too many of the jokes seem anxious to establish that nobody is enjoying the wrong thing.

Yaron Orbach’s New York photography gives the romance an attractive place to happen, and the location work is one of the film’s uncomplicated pleasures. Scott Kuzio’s production design cannot fill in what the script leaves vague about daily life under the ban. The city looks ready for a night out, but the writing has not made its inhabitants’ acceptance of the restriction believable. That leaves the look of an ordinary romantic comedy carrying a rule that ought to change almost everything about ordinary romance.

Tia Nolan and Robert Nassau edit a film that feels crowded even at 103 minutes. Moving between mishaps does not solve the problem of how little the central situation develops, and the busyness becomes tiring. Christopher Stracey and Este Haim’s music cannot persuade us to relax into a night out governed by this particular clock. The film keeps encouraging us to enjoy ourselves while supplying fresh reasons to question how any of this is supposed to work.

A romantic comedy does not owe us a policy paper, and there is nothing wrong with an absurd obstacle to getting two attractive people together. This particular obstacle makes the government responsible for deciding when unmarried people may have sex. Once Braun makes that the reason for the rush, the film needs some curiosity about what it does to people. Instead, Gluck keeps returning to familiar romantic business, and the effort to stay cheerful begins to feel evasive.

We can see the case for simply enjoying Barbaro and Turner, and the film becomes more engaging whenever their chemistry takes priority. But the jokes are too patchy to make ignoring the premise a worthwhile bargain. Anyone drawn by the possibility of a rude comedy about sexual restrictions will find the timidity particularly frustrating. Save it for an evening when liking the leads is enough.

## What the critics say

Most critics are unconvinced by One Night Only, though praise for Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner is widespread. Their charm and chemistry give the romance some warmth, even in reviews that find the plotting contrived or the jokes weak. The New York setting, occasional comic flourishes and cameos also earn approval, but the prevailing view is that these pleasures cannot compensate for a poorly developed premise about an annual window of legal premarital sex.

The sharpest divide concerns how lightly the film treats that restriction: detractors find its politics troubling and its attitude to sex timid, while supporters enjoy the romantic mishaps without demanding sustained satire. Deadline welcomes the emphasis on laughs over the premise, and /Film finds the world-building persuasive, marking a wide spread of opinion. Even the leads are not universally admired: NME finds their chemistry tepid, against the broader agreement that they are the film’s chief strength.

## Straight answers

**Is One Night Only worth watching?**

*One Night Only* is worth watching only if liking Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner is enough for you, and we scored it 46. The pair have real ease together, but Travis Braun's script treats a government ban on premarital sex as a mere deadline for mishaps, and the jokes are too patchy to make ignoring that bargain worthwhile.

**How long is One Night Only, and what is it rated?**

*One Night Only* runs 1h 43m. It is a romance and comedy film.

**Where can I watch One Night Only in India?**

*One Night Only* is not on any streaming or rental service in India at the moment. It is available in 13 other countries; change your country at the top of the page to see where. Availability is checked daily.

**How violent or frightening is One Night Only, and is it suitable for children?**

*One Night Only* is a 15 in the UK and R in the US, which reflects its sexual premise and frank talk rather than any violence or frights. There is nothing here to scare anyone, but the whole film is about a twelve-hour window for sex, with daydream sequences to match, so it is not for children and unlikely to suit younger teenagers.

**How does One Night Only compare to The Apartment?**

*One Night Only* is the slighter film beside [*The Apartment*](https://film.one/film/the-apartment), which is funny, sad and curious about how rules around sex serve the powerful. Billy Wilder's comedy lets its people's unhappiness matter; Will Gluck's keeps returning to cheerful romantic business and never asks what its ban does to anyone. Watch the older film first, and for pleasure.

**What should I watch after One Night Only?**

After *One Night Only*, try [*The Apartment*](https://film.one/film/the-apartment) (1960, Fi1m 91): A romantic comedy that understands how rules about sex favour the powerful. Then [*Before Sunrise*](https://film.one/film/before-sunrise) (1995, Fi1m 89): Two strangers and a deadline, with enough conversation to make both matter; and [*The Lobster*](https://film.one/film/the-lobster) (2015, Fi1m 78): A society regulates romance, and the film follows that cruelty much further.
