*In a sentence:* Tom Holland is terribly polite for someone being attacked by other people’s villains

> Tom Holland gives this crowded Spider-Man reunion enough feeling to justify the return visits. Jon Watts handles the people better than the spectacle, and the dependence on earlier films makes this a qualified recommendation for the already acquainted.

## Synopsis

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is approaching the end of high school when his life as Spider-Man becomes entangled with other versions of his world. Alongside Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Peter encounters adversaries including Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and Dr Otto Octavius, Doc Ock (Alfred Molina). MJ (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) remain central to Peter’s life as visitors from across the multiverse crowd into it. Peter has to navigate these encounters alongside the demands of friendship and his responsibilities as a teenage superhero.

## Review

Jon Watts has made a superhero sequel for people who remember other superhero films, sometimes rather too fondly. *Spider-Man: No Way Home* is overfilled and visually ordinary, but Tom Holland gives it enough warmth and worry to make the evening worthwhile. The multiverse brings familiar antagonists into Peter Parker’s story, with all the pleasures and obligations that returning characters entail. There is considerable enjoyment in seeing them again, although the film sometimes takes recognition as permission to linger. Its strongest scenes keep Peter’s difficulty in doing the right thing in view.

Holland makes Peter’s wish to help look sincere, then lets us see how ill-equipped the boy feels for the task. We were moved by the strain on Holland’s face as that responsibility became harder to bear. He allows Peter to look young and uncertain without making his goodness seem foolish. Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds help here: Peter has people worth paying attention to when nobody is fighting. Watts gives these relationships enough space to matter, even while the larger cast competes for it.

Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, supplies the threat that the film’s computer-generated fights often lack. His enjoyment of being dangerous is unsettling, and Watts gives that performance room rather than treating the character as a familiar costume. Alfred Molina’s Dr Otto Octavius, or Doc Ock, can make an exchange of dialogue feel like a confrontation. These are actors making something of a return visit, and their performances remain enjoyable even when the surrounding story feels busy for its own sake.

The screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers is less sure of itself when arranging all these encounters. Peter’s coming-of-age story keeps having to wait while the film attends to another familiar face, and some decisions needed to set things moving are difficult to accept. His wish to do the right thing deserves a less contrived set of obstacles. There are also shifts between joking and distress that arrive before the preceding scene has settled. At 148 minutes, the film has enough time to make those transitions less abrupt.

Mauro Fiore’s cinematography does its most useful work in the close-ups, where Holland’s expressions can hold our attention without much assistance. The action gives the eye less to enjoy, with computer-generated movement that too often lacks a convincing sense of weight. Darren Gilford’s production design makes too little impression amid the effects, so the encounters depend heavily on who has arrived. The multiverse ought to offer more visual variety than this.

Editors Jeffrey Ford and Leigh Folsom Boyd are better at giving the actors time than at keeping the whole film moving. They allow emotional exchanges to continue without always cutting away to a gag, a decision that gives Holland’s sincerity a chance. Michael Giacchino’s score can be too insistent about how much we should care, particularly when Holland has already shown us how Peter feels. Those passages would benefit from letting the performance do more of the work.

As a superhero film, this is most persuasive when it asks what kindness might cost someone still learning how to be responsible. That concern gives the returning characters something worthwhile to do, even if the film spends too long enjoying their entrances. Anyone starting here will have to tolerate scenes whose chief attraction is familiarity. We recommend it if Peter Parker already matters to you; allow some patience for the crowded stretches.

## What the critics say

Most critics respond warmly to Spider-Man: No Way Home, with praise clustering around Tom Holland’s earnest performance and the emotional weight given to Peter Parker’s relationships. The multiverse reunions offer considerable pleasure for fans, but the favourable reviews also credit Jon Watts with keeping Peter’s humanity visible amid a crowded cast. For these critics, the nostalgia works because the returning characters have something to do beyond being recognised.

The spread is wide, however, and the same crowding becomes a central complaint elsewhere. Reservations concern uneven pacing, thin character development and action that lacks visual invention. Even some positive reviews find Peter’s own story overshadowed. Little White Lies sees enjoyable nostalgia with too little substance, while Vulture objects more sharply to the plotting and lifeless CGI. The main divide is over whether the emotional scenes justify the dependence on earlier films.

## Straight answers

**Is Spider-Man: No Way Home worth watching?**

*Spider-Man: No Way Home* is worth watching if Peter Parker already matters to you, and we scored it 74. Tom Holland gives the crowded reunion enough feeling to carry it, and Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina make their return visits count. Anyone starting here will have to sit through scenes whose chief attraction is recognising who has just arrived.

**How long is Spider-Man: No Way Home, and what is it rated?**

*Spider-Man: No Way Home* runs 2h 28m and is rated 12+ by the Derzhkino in Ukraine. It is an action and adventure film.

**Where can I watch Spider-Man: No Way Home in Ukraine?**

*Spider-Man: No Way Home* is streaming on Netflix in Ukraine, and it is also available to rent from Apple TV from ₴3.99. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Spider-Man: No Way Home, and is it suitable for children?**

*Spider-Man: No Way Home* is a UK 12A, and its violence is the computer-generated kind, with fights that rarely carry much physical weight. The one real menace is Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, whose pleasure in being dangerous may unsettle younger children. Older children and teenagers used to superhero films will find nothing here they cannot take.

**How does Spider-Man: No Way Home compare to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse?**

*Spider-Man: No Way Home* is a live-action reunion that depends on earlier films for its pleasures, while [*Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*](https://film.one/film/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse) is an animated film with visual ideas of its own and a teenager who needs no introduction. We think the animated film is the better of the two. Choose the reunion if you know the older films; choose *Into the Spider-Verse* if you want a multiverse that looks like more than one place.

**What should I watch after Spider-Man: No Way Home?**

After *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, try [*Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*](https://film.one/film/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse) (2018, Fi1m 87): A multiverse with distinct visual ideas and a teenager worth caring about. Then [*The Iron Giant*](https://film.one/film/the-iron-giant) (1999, Fi1m 88): Another story about extraordinary power that takes the choice to be kind seriously; and [*A Matter of Life and Death*](https://film.one/film/a-matter-of-life-and-death) (1946, Fi1m 92): Romance across competing worlds, with wit and space for people to matter.
