*In a sentence:* Nobody formed a rap group hoping to spend this much time discussing contracts

> This N.W.A. biopic is worth seeing for its young cast, studio humour and forceful music. The business disputes drag, and the men receive a more forgiving hearing than the women.

## Synopsis

In late-1980s Compton, Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins) and Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell) begin putting the life around them into rap. The musicians gather in a garage and work in recording studios as N.W.A., trying to get their songs heard beyond the neighbourhood. Police encounters bring the hostility of the streets into the music, while recording sessions turn those experiences into songs. Manager Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti) offers a route into the record business, where getting heard also means deciding who gets to control the work.

## Review

*Straight Outta Compton* is a good music biopic with performances strong enough to carry its considerable evasions. The director makes the formation of N.W.A. feel exciting before asking us to regard it as history. The early stretch earns that excitement by putting the musicians in streets and studios, showing the hostility they meet and the pleasure they take in working together. It also has a sense of humour about getting started. The trouble comes when the film grows more protective of the people it is celebrating.

O’Shea Jackson Jr. gives Ice Cube a watchfulness that makes his anger convincing, while Corey Hawkins keeps Dr. Dre’s musical concentration from becoming solemn. Jason Mitchell is the most affecting of the three as Eazy-E, allowing uncertainty to sit alongside the swagger. Their exchanges in the studio make the group feel like people who enjoy one another’s company. Those scenes give the actors room to be funny without making the musicians seem foolish.

Matthew Libatique’s photography gives the early street scenes an action film’s urgency, and the threat in the police encounters makes that choice useful. We were angry watching those encounters: they give the hostility in the lyrics a cause we can see, rather than leaving it as a claim about the group’s reputation. Shane Valentino’s production design is most useful in the garage and recording spaces, where the surroundings keep our attention on people working together. The film keeps connecting what happens outside to what gets made in the studio.

Editors Michael Tronick and Billy Fox keep the group’s early progress moving briskly, with the recording and performance sequences supplying much of the pleasure. The music is forceful enough to make the familiar rise-to-success story feel worth hearing again. Joseph Trapanese’s score is less persuasive when it adds emphasis to emotional scenes that already have enough from the actors. The director occasionally pushes those moments too hard. The performances are better when he leaves them alone.

The screenplay by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff becomes less nimble once business disputes begin occupying more of its attention. The arguments about contracts have a place here, especially in a story about black artists dealing with the people who profit from their work. Too many make much the same point. Paul Giamatti brings welcome unease to Jerry Heller, though a persuasive performance cannot make each business discussion necessary. At 147 minutes, it has room to repeat itself and does.

The larger weakness is how carefully the film handles its subjects’ reputations. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are among the producers, and their screen selves receive patient explanations that the women rarely get. Those women have too little space for wishes or grievances of their own. The group’s misogyny is something the film largely steps around, which makes its account of artistic honesty feel selective. A fuller treatment would have made the men more interesting.

That caution keeps the film within the safer habits of the music biopic, despite the aggression of the music itself. Yet the young cast make the early friendships persuasive, and the recording scenes retain a pleasure the later disputes cannot quite erase. We recommend it for the performances and the music, with patience advised for the second half. Keep some scepticism for the version of the men offered alongside their records.

## What the critics say

Most critics respond warmly to Straight Outta Compton, praising the energy of its musical sequences and the conviction of its young cast. Jason Mitchell, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Corey Hawkins draw particular notice for giving the central trio personality beyond their public images. The early Compton scenes and encounters with police are widely admired for making the anger behind N.W.A.’s lyrics tangible, while the studio scenes supply humour and a sense of musicians discovering their abilities.

The reservations centre on the protections of an authorised biography: omitted controversies, sidelined women and a flattering account of its subjects. Several reviews find that contract disputes and familiar biopic plotting drain the second half. The spread runs from enthusiastic praise to mixed assessments rather than outright rejection. Variety finds enough human detail to overcome the clichés; Time Out sees an enjoyable but sentimental film that avoids hard truths.

## Straight answers

**Is Straight Outta Compton worth watching?**

*Straight Outta Compton* is worth watching for its young cast and the force of its recording scenes, and we scored it 76. The business disputes in the second half repeat themselves, and the film handles the reputations of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are among its producers, more carefully than it handles the women around them.

**How long is Straight Outta Compton, and what is it rated?**

*Straight Outta Compton* runs 2h 27m and is rated R by the MPA in the US. It is a drama and music film.

**Where can I watch Straight Outta Compton in the US?**

*Straight Outta Compton* is streaming on Netflix in the US, and it is also available to rent from Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video from $3.99. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Straight Outta Compton, and is it suitable for children?**

*Straight Outta Compton* carries a UK 15 certificate, and it is not a film for children. The police encounters have an action film's urgency and a real sense of threat, and the lyrics and the language throughout are aggressive; older teenagers should be fine, though the men's treatment of women is something the film shows without examining.

**How does Straight Outta Compton compare to La Haine?**

*Straight Outta Compton* and [*La Haine*](https://film.one/film/la-haine) both follow young men under police hostility, but the earlier French film is the tighter and angrier of the two, with no record deal offering a way out. Kassovitz's film is the one we would send anyone to; the N.W.A. biopic suits viewers who want the music and the studio humour and can sit through the contract arguments.

**What should I watch after Straight Outta Compton?**

After *Straight Outta Compton*, try [*The Harder They Come*](https://film.one/film/the-harder-they-come) (1972, Fi1m 80): Another musician discovers how quickly the record business can narrow his options. Then [*La Haine*](https://film.one/film/la-haine) (1995, Fi1m 90): Police hostility and young male friendship, with no recording contract offering escape; and [*The Commitments*](https://film.one/film/the-commitments) (1991, Fi1m 82): Band chemistry, bruised egos and rehearsals that make the arguments worth enduring.

- **The Playlist**, The Playlist Staff (B-): The review finds the film dynamic and electrifying in its music and performance sequences but criticizes its conventional biopic structure, excessive length, flat dialogue scenes, and sense of serving as a legacy trophy with some revisionism. - **Collider**, Matt Goldberg (C): The film follows the standard music biopic formula too closely, focusing on personalities over a stronger call to arms despite its subject matter.
