*In a sentence:* Tom Holland does all that running and still cannot get a decent conversation going

> Tom Holland brings welcome energy to a thin adventure, but the jokes and his partnership with Mark Wahlberg keep falling flat. There is occasional fun in the action, and little reason to care between the set pieces.

## Synopsis

Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) are the central pair in this action-adventure mystery directed by Ruben Fleischer. The other principal characters are Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali), Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) and Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas). The supporting cast includes The Scotsman (Steven Waddington), Hugo (Pingi Moli) and Sister Bernadette (Georgia Goodman), with Tiernan Jones playing Young Nate and Rudy Pankow playing Young Sam. This 2022 film runs for 116 minutes and carries a 12A certificate.

## Review

*Uncharted* is a serviceable action adventure that never gives us much reason to care about its people. Ruben Fleischer has a willing lead in Tom Holland, and there are stretches when his enthusiasm is enough to keep things pleasant. Too often, though, the film settles for movement and assumes that enjoyment will follow. At 116 minutes, it feels longer than a picture this slight should, particularly whenever the action stops and the central pair have to talk.

As Nathan Drake, Tom Holland makes effort appealing. His physical commitment matters because the film needs us to believe that someone is enjoying these unlikely challenges, even when we are not. There is a useful openness to the performance, a readiness to look delighted or out of his depth, which gives the action a human point of interest. We wanted more of that pleasure; instead, he spends too much of the film trying to animate exchanges with Mark Wahlberg.

Mark Wahlberg plays Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan with a dryness that might have worked against a more distinctive script. Rafe Judkins, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum supply banter that seldom sounds like two people discovering anything about each other. We were bored by their bickering: the replies keep arriving, but the relationship barely seems to develop through them. A mismatched-partners adventure needs us to enjoy the company during the pauses, and this one too often leaves its actors waiting for the next diversion.

Chung Chung-hoon’s cinematography gives the leading man a persuasive physical presence, though the places around him have little atmosphere. The less convincing digital effects make some of the large-scale action difficult to read, just when it should be most exciting. Chris Lebenzon and Richard Pearson keep the cutting brisk, and the sheer excess occasionally becomes enjoyable on its own terms. But the rush too often prevents us from registering exactly what makes an escape difficult.

Shepherd Frankel’s production design gives the puzzle-solving scenes a welcome solidity, though the film seldom allows much time to enjoy its surroundings. These passages briefly offer something to consider besides the next impact. Ramin Djawadi’s score is efficient at supplying urgency, but less successful at giving the journey a character of its own. The music keeps asking for excitement even when a little quiet might allow the actors to make us interested.

Sophia Ali, as Chloe Frazer, brings a liveliness that makes the underwritten central pairing more frustrating. Tati Gabrielle’s Jo Braddock also has presence enough to suggest a more engaging film somewhere nearby. Antonio Banderas, playing Santiago Moncada, is less well served: the character needs more than the script supplies to become memorable. There are performers here who could make an adventure feel unpredictable, but the writing rarely gives them an opportunity to surprise us.

The standard for this sort of adventure is not originality at every turn. It is a few good puzzles, readable action and the pleasure of spending time with people whose differences produce something funny. *Uncharted* manages portions of that, with Tom Holland doing much of the work, but never enough at once. His enthusiasm is the reason to give it a chance, provided the jokes are not part of the attraction.

*Fi1m score 50, published 5 October 2026.*

## What the critics say

Most critics find Uncharted a watchable but generic adventure, with the reviews split between qualified enjoyment and disappointment. Praise clusters around Tom Holland’s energy and charm, alongside action sequences that supply occasional excitement even for otherwise unpersuaded reviewers. Supporting performances also draw some approval, particularly Tati Gabrielle and Sophia Ali. The recurring complaint is that the thin characters, familiar plotting and weak jokes leave the spectacle with too much work to do.

The sharpest disagreement concerns Holland’s partnership with Mark Wahlberg: Consequence enjoys their chemistry, while Total Film finds its absence a significant weakness. Holland himself is not universally endorsed; Radio Times considers him miscast. The action divides critics too, earning credit for invention and scale but criticism for muddy effects and poor clarity. Enthusiasm remains scarce across the reviews, though the more receptive critics find enough charm and energetic spectacle to accept the shortcomings.

## Straight answers

**Is Uncharted worth watching?**

*Uncharted* offers occasional action fun and an energetic Tom Holland, but we scored it 50 out of 100 because the thin adventure gives us little reason to care. It is most likely to suit viewers content with brisk set pieces; we find the flat jokes and unconvincing partnership with Mark Wahlberg make the pauses hard going.

**How long is Uncharted, and what is it rated?**

*Uncharted* runs 1h 56m. It is an action and adventure film.

**Where can I watch Uncharted in the Philippines?**

*Uncharted* is available to rent from Apple TV from ₱149.00. Availability is checked daily; the links above go straight to each service.

**How violent or frightening is Uncharted, and is it suitable for children?**

*Uncharted* carries a UK 12A certificate, so it is not automatically suitable for younger children, who need an accompanying adult at the cinema. The certificate suggests parental judgement is needed for under-12s; we would not infer a precise level of violence or fright from it alone, though the action includes impacts and large-scale escapes.

**How does Uncharted compare to Romancing the Stone?**

*Uncharted* is the weaker choice beside [*Romancing the Stone*](https://film.one/film/romancing-the-stone), which we recommend for its sharper jokes and a central couple worth following. Holland brings energy to *Uncharted*, but its banter keeps falling flat; Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas give the other adventure enough romantic wit to sustain interest, despite familiar plotting and occasionally tiresome swagger.

**What should I watch after Uncharted?**

After *Uncharted*, try [*Romancing the Stone*](https://film.one/film/romancing-the-stone) (1984, Fi1m 77): A treasure hunt with sharper jokes and a couple worth following. Then [*The Mummy*](https://film.one/film/the-mummy) (1999, Fi1m 71): Ancient dangers, brisk action and a central partnership with some warmth; and [*The Good, the Bad, the Weird*](https://film.one/film/the-good-the-bad-the-weird) (2008, Fi1m 74): A treasure chase with stranger characters and action worth paying attention to.
