# Animation films

Animation can be about anything, which is why so much of it here is also a family film, an adventure or a comedy. What we are judging is whether the drawing does something a camera could not, and whether the people in it, rats and robots included, behave like people. The bad ones mistake movement for life and noise for jokes. The good ones are patient, notice small things, and trust a child to sit still for them. Our shelf leans towards Hayao Miyazaki, who turns up more often than anyone, and towards films made for children that adults need not be embarrassed by.

Start with [Grave of the Fireflies](/film/grave-of-the-fireflies), 94, Isao Takahata’s war drama, harrowing because its children stay children; then [Spirited Away](/film/spirited-away), 92, Miyazaki’s bathhouse fantasy, frightening and moving in turn; then [Toy Story](/film/toy-story), 92, funny, tightly made and kind to awkward characters. After those, WALL·E makes its environmental warnings feel personal, and My Neighbor Totoro offers the same patience with far less peril.

For US. 245 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom*](https://film.one/film/shaun-the-sheep-the-beast-of-mossy-bottom.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · PG · 1h 21m · Animation/Comedy
Aardman’s third Shaun the Sheep feature drops the flock into an old monster film and gets steady laughs out of it for 81 minutes. It is a long episode of the television programme, which is no bad thing, and it is not more than that.
- [*PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie*](https://film.one/film/paw-patrol-the-dino-movie.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 43 · PG · 1h 28m · Animation/Adventure
Cal Brunker’s family animation has some dinosaur diversion and treats Rex with care, but the thin writing and blunt lessons make it hard to recommend beyond households already devoted to the pups.
- [*Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender*](https://film.one/film/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 39m · Animation/Adventure · on Paramount+
Lauren Montgomery brings Aang and his friends back as adults, and the drawing and the fights are as good as the series ever managed. The story underneath is thin and in a hurry, and it saves its best scenes for people who love these characters.
- [*Minions & Monsters*](https://film.one/film/minions-and-monsters.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 30m · Adventure/Animation
Pierre Coffin’s third standalone Minions film sends its yellow chorus to 1920s Hollywood and, for about an hour, has more ideas about cinema than we expected. Then it becomes the film it always was. Still the best of them.
- [*Toy Story 5*](https://film.one/film/toy-story-5.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 66 · PG · 1h 42m · Animation/Family
Andrew Stanton brings the toys back to face a tablet, with the wit and craft the series has always had. What it lacks is nerve: it raises the question of screens and children, then puts it down and goes home.
- [*The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*](https://film.one/film/the-super-mario-galaxy-movie.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 38 · PG · 1h 38m · Family/Comedy · on Peacock
The brothers go to space and the film goes with them at a sprint, never holding a shot long enough for a joke to land. Handsome to look at, tiring to sit through, and most critics have said so. Poor.
- [*A Magnificent Life*](https://film.one/film/a-magnificent-life.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 61 · PG-13 · 1h 31m · Animation/History
Sylvain Chomet’s first film in fifteen years is drawn with all his old skill and tells Marcel Pagnol’s life as a run of fond anecdotes with nothing much joining them. Lovely to look at, and the man himself never quite comes into focus.
- [*Hoppers*](https://film.one/film/hoppers.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 76 · PG · 1h 44m · Adventure/Animation · on Disney+
Pixar’s beaver body-swap is the studio’s funniest film in some years: quick, odd and unafraid of a nasty joke. The plot carries more than it needs and the last act loses its nerve, but the first hour is a pleasure.
- [*David*](https://film.one/film/david.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 58 · PG · 1h 49m · Animation/Family · on Netflix
The available critical accounts suggest accomplished animation but disagree about whether the film earns our affection. Our provisional assessment is mixed: reported visual care gives it appeal, but concerns about the drama prevent a recommendation.
- [*Zootopia 2*](https://film.one/film/zootopia-2.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 48m · Animation/Adventure · on Disney+
Howard and Bush’s sequel is quick, dense and often funny, and Ke Huy Quan’s Gary De’Snake is Disney’s best new character in some time. The mystery around him is busier and less sure-footed than the first film’s.
- [*Arco*](https://film.one/film/arco.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 1h 29m · Adventure/Animation · on Hulu
*Arco* is a warm, colourful family adventure that makes hope feel reasonable. Ugo Bienvenu gives its children enough curiosity to carry us through, though the time-travel rules and comic adults need more work.
- [*Little Amélie or the Character of Rain*](https://film.one/film/little-amelie-or-the-character-of-rain.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 17m · Animation/Drama
Maïlys Vallade and Liane-cho Han make early childhood feel strange, absorbing and worth taking seriously. The animation rewards close attention, though the toddler’s viewpoint can be difficult to follow; we recommend it with that reservation.
- [*The Twits*](https://film.one/film/the-twits.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 45 · PG · 1h 39m · Animation/Comedy · on Netflix
Margo Martindale and Johnny Vegas make the Twits as foul as Dahl wrote them, and the film spends the rest of its length apologising for them. Grubby, noisy and funny in patches, it is a black comedy with the black rinsed out.
- [*Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle*](https://film.one/film/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba-infinity-castle.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 36m · Animation/Action
Haruo Sotozaki delivers inventive animated combat and gives the demons enough history to make their suffering matter. We recommend it to series followers, with a warning that repeated flashbacks make an already long film feel longer.
- [*KPop Demon Hunters*](https://film.one/film/kpop-demon-hunters.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 76 · PG · 1h 36m · Fantasy/Music · on Netflix
A K-pop trio fights demons between encores, and the film is faster, funnier and better drawn than that sentence suggests. The songs are good, the faces are better, and the story underneath is the ordinary one. Worth your evening, especially with children.
- [*Elio*](https://film.one/film/elio.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 38m · Animation/Adventure · on Disney+
The opening half hour, about a lonely boy who wants to be taken away, is close to Pixar’s best. What follows is bright, busy and kind, and it is also the story you expect, told at the pace of someone who has told it before.
- [*Predator: Killer of Killers*](https://film.one/film/predator-killer-of-killers.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 25m · Animation/Action · on Hulu
Dan Trachtenberg takes the Predator through the Viking age, feudal Japan and the Pacific war in 85 animated minutes, and the fights are as inventive as any the series has staged. The people being fought over are thinner than the blades. Worth an evening if the franchise is yours.
- [*Ne Zha 2*](https://film.one/film/ne-zha-2.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 67 · NR · 2h 24m · Animation/Action · on HBO Max
Jiaozi’s animated fantasy gives its battles more care than its storytelling. The movement and detail can be absorbing, but 144 minutes of crowded mythology, crude jokes and renewed combat wear down the pleasure.
- [*Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl*](https://film.one/film/wallace-and-gromit-vengeance-most-fowl.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 81 · PG · 1h 19m · Animation/Adventure · on Netflix
Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham make a warm, funny adventure whose silent characters do the finest work. The plot is familiar and the police detours can drag, but the animation and the central friendship earn our recommendation.
- [*Mufasa: The Lion King*](https://film.one/film/mufasa-the-lion-king.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 57 · PG · 1h 58m · Adventure/Family · on Disney+
Barry Jenkins puts a real film-maker’s eye behind the photoreal lions, and for stretches it shows: a flood, a brotherhood, a villain with Mads Mikkelsen’s voice. But the songs are forgettable and the framing device keeps stopping the story to make jokes.
- [*The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim*](https://film.one/film/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · PG-13 · 2h 14m · Animation/Fantasy · on HBO Max
Kenji Kamiyama’s hand-drawn prequel has a good king, a decent daughter and a siege that runs out of things to do in the snow. Handsome in stretches, borrowed in others, and not enough of a film to send anyone to on its own.
- [*Moana 2*](https://film.one/film/moana-2.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · PG · 1h 40m · Adventure/Animation · on Disney+
This return to Moana’s ocean is as handsome as the first film and a good deal emptier. The water is a wonder, Cravalho is still the reason to watch, and the new songs go in one ear and out the other.
- [*Flow*](https://film.one/film/flow.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 83 · PG · 1h 25m · Adventure/Animation
Gints Zilbalodis’s wordless film about a cat adrift on a rising sea is patient, exact and more frightening than its U certificate suggests. It drifts in the middle and its ending reaches further than it grasps, but we recommend it, adults included.
- [*Memoir of a Snail*](https://film.one/film/memoir-of-a-snail.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 34m · Animation/Comedy · on AMC+, Hulu
Adam Elliot’s stop-motion memoir is handmade down to the thumbprints and it is close to unbearably sad, sometimes on purpose and sometimes not. See it for Jacki Weaver’s Pinky, who walks in partway through and cheers the whole thing up.
- [*Kensuke's Kingdom*](https://film.one/film/kensukes-kingdom.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 76 · 1h 24m · Animation/Adventure · on The Roku Channel, Tubi
Neil Boyle and Kirk Hendry’s hand-drawn adventure is quietly affecting, especially when its drawings carry the feeling. The island’s dangers are softened too much, but the central friendship makes this worth a family’s evening.
- [*The Wild Robot*](https://film.one/film/the-wild-robot.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 42m · Family/Animation · on Amazon Prime Video
Chris Sanders’s film about a robot raising a gosling is the warmest film DreamWorks has made in years, painted like a picture book and honest about death. We recommend it, with a caveat: the last third swaps feeling for action.
- [*Transformers One*](https://film.one/film/transformers-one.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 44m · Animation/Science Fiction · on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+
Josh Cooley’s animated prequel gives Optimus Prime and Megatron a shared youth as miners and a friendship worth caring about, and it is funnier and clearer than anything the live-action films managed. The plot goes where you know it will, and the last act is mostly noise.
- [*Despicable Me 4*](https://film.one/film/despicable-me-4.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · PG · 1h 34m · Animation/Comedy · on Amazon Prime Video
The fourth Gru film is 94 minutes of sketches with a plot stapled on: bright, noisy, sometimes funny, and never in the same story for more than ten minutes. The children will not mind. The adults will check their watches.
- [*Inside Out 2*](https://film.one/film/inside-out-2.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 68 · PG · 1h 37m · Animation/Adventure · on Disney+
Kelsey Mann’s sequel puts a thirteen-year-old’s head in the hands of Anxiety and follows the first film’s map almost turn for turn. It is kind, funny and well made, and one sequence late on is the real thing. The rest is a good copy.
- [*Robot Dreams*](https://film.one/film/robot-dreams.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 84 · NR · 1h 42m · Animation/Drama
Pablo Berger turns Sara Varon’s graphic novel into a wordless, hand-drawn film about a lonely dog, the robot he builds and the beach that comes between them. It sags in the middle; its last ten minutes hurt us more than we expected.
- [*The Garfield Movie*](https://film.one/film/the-garfield-movie.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 47 · PG · 1h 41m · Adventure/Animation · on Hulu
Mark Dindal finds some good physical comedy in Garfield’s outdoor adventure, but the cat’s dry indifference gets lost in the bustle. Appealing images and a lively Hannah Waddingham cannot make the routine story worth a family evening.
- [*Kung Fu Panda 4*](https://film.one/film/kung-fu-panda-4.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 54 · PG · 1h 34m · Action/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video
Po’s fourth outing is brisk, bright and fitfully funny, with Viola Davis’s shape-shifting sorceress the one new thing in it. What is missing is the feeling the earlier films kept underneath the slapstick, and without it the film passes pleasantly and leaves nothing behind.
- [*Soul*](https://film.one/film/soul.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 41m · Animation/Family · on Disney+
Pete Docter makes a funny, moving animation about the pressure to find a purpose. The rules of its soul world need pruning, but Jamie Foxx and the jazz give *Soul* enough life to earn a warm recommendation.
- [*Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget*](https://film.one/film/chicken-run-dawn-of-the-nugget.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 41m · Family/Animation · on Netflix
Aardman’s sequel swaps the prison camp for a heist and keeps the clay. It is neat, handsome and mostly pleasant, and only once, in a room full of grinning hens, does it find something as sharp as the original.
- [*The Boy and the Heron*](https://film.one/film/the-boy-and-the-heron.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 81 · PG-13 · 2h 04m · Animation/Fantasy · on HBO Max
Hayao Miyazaki, back from retirement, sends a grieving boy down a tower into a world of herons, parakeets and spirits. The first hour is as controlled as anything he has made; the second is crowded and given to speeches. We recommend it warmly.
- [*Wish*](https://film.one/film/wish.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 49 · PG · 1h 35m · Animation/Family · on Disney+
Disney’s hundredth-birthday picture is handsome, brief and almost entirely empty. Ariana DeBose sings well and Chris Pine enjoys being wicked, but the story is a collection of nods to better films, and the songs are gone before the credits finish.
- [*Trolls Band Together*](https://film.one/film/trolls-band-together.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 58 · PG · 1h 31m · Animation/Family · on Amazon Prime Video
The third Trolls film is 91 minutes of boy band jokes for the parents and colour for the children, made with real care in the textures and much less in the story. Small children will be happy; nobody else will remember it by Tuesday.
- [*Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem*](https://film.one/film/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-mutant-mayhem.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 77 · PG · 1h 40m · Animation/Comedy · on Paramount+
Jeff Rowe’s animated reboot treats the turtles as what they have always been called and never been: teenagers. It is funny, drawn as if scribbled in a school jotter, and it runs on a plot you could recite in advance. We recommend it.
- [*The First Slam Dunk*](https://film.one/film/the-first-slam-dunk.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 81 · PG-13 · 2h 05m · Animation/Comedy · on Netflix
*The First Slam Dunk* makes animated basketball feel physically demanding and worth caring about. The flashbacks sometimes break the match’s grip, and the tactics can get dense, but the movement earns our attention back.
- [*Nimona*](https://film.one/film/nimona.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 1h 39m · Animation/Family · on Netflix
Nick Bruno and Troy Quane’s animated fairytale about a framed knight and a shapeshifting teenager is funnier and better drawn than its plot, which you will see coming from the castle walls. Worth your evening, particularly with a child present.
- [*Elemental*](https://film.one/film/elemental.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 42m · Animation/Comedy · on Disney+
Peter Sohn’s fire-and-water romance is one of the handsomest things Pixar has made in years and one of the most cluttered. When it leaves Ember and Wade alone together it is lovely; the rest of the time it is filing paperwork.
- [*Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse*](https://film.one/film/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 82 · PG · 2h 20m · Animation/Action
The second Spider-Verse film is more beautiful, funnier and stranger than the first, with a different painting style for every world it visits. It is also 140 minutes long, a good deal of it spent explaining rules, and only half of a longer story.
- [*Suzume*](https://film.one/film/suzume.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 2h 02m · Animation/Drama · on Crunchyroll, Netflix
Makoto Shinkai sends a schoolgirl and an enchanted chair across Japan to shut the doors that let earthquakes in. The chair is funny, the skies are as good as ever, and the film is sincere about a real disaster; the romance underneath is thin.
- [*The Super Mario Bros. Movie*](https://film.one/film/the-super-mario-bros-movie.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 56 · PG · 1h 33m · Family/Comedy · on Peacock
Bright, brisk and dutiful, Horvath and Jelenic’s Mario gets every pipe and mushroom right and gives Jack Black a lava castle to sing in. Children will be happy for ninety minutes, and it has almost nothing to say about the two plumbers in the title.
- [*Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio*](https://film.one/film/guillermo-del-toros-pinocchio.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 57m · Animation/Fantasy · on Netflix
Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson carve the fairy tale out of rough pine and set it in Mussolini’s Italy. The puppets are the most expressive we have seen in years; the songs are thin and the middle sprawls, but the father is worth it.
- [*Minions: The Rise of Gru*](https://film.one/film/minions-the-rise-of-gru.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 66 · PG · 1h 27m · Animation/Comedy · on Netflix
Kyle Balda’s cartoon delivers enough inventive slapstick to justify an undemanding evening. Pierre Coffin’s Minions do most of the work; the fragmented story and lengthy action stretches make the film more tiring than it needs to be.
- [*Marcel the Shell with Shoes On*](https://film.one/film/marcel-the-shell-with-shoes-on.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 77 · PG · 1h 30m · Animation/Comedy
Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer Camp stretch their one-inch shell to feature length, and he mostly survives it. Funny, gentle and thinner than it should be when it turns to fame, the film is carried home by Isabella Rossellini as the grandmother.
- [*Sing 2*](https://film.one/film/sing-2.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 63 · PG · 1h 50m · Animation/Comedy · on Amazon Prime Video
Garth Jennings’s animated musical makes decent family entertainment out of engaging voices and elaborate musical numbers. Its crowded story and relentless song snippets are harder to enjoy, particularly when the performers stop to deliver another lesson.
- [*Flee*](https://film.one/film/flee.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 83 · PG-13 · 1h 29m · Documentary/Animation · on Tubi
Jonas Poher Rasmussen sits his friend on a rug, asks him where home is, and draws the answer. The result is patient, frightening and far funnier than its subject suggests; the animation stiffens whenever nobody is in danger, and it hardly matters.
- [*Encanto*](https://film.one/film/encanto.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 42m · Animation/Comedy · on Disney+
A warm, perceptive family musical with an engaging heroine and a house worth getting to know. Its eagerness to tidy up difficult feelings is the chief reservation, but we recommend it warmly.
- [*Ron's Gone Wrong*](https://film.one/film/rons-gone-wrong.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 71 · PG · 1h 47m · Animation/Science Fiction · on Disney+
An amiable family comedy about a boy and a faulty robot, with enough affection to make its familiar story worth an evening. The friendship is convincing; the warnings about technology need more thought.
- [*Luca*](https://film.one/film/luca.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 78 · PG · 1h 35m · Animation/Family · on Disney+
Enrico Casarosa’s seaside fantasy is funny and affecting, and its Italian coastal town is a pleasure to explore. The friendship holds our attention more reliably than the loose, sometimes meandering story.
- [*The Mitchells vs. the Machines*](https://film.one/film/the-mitchells-vs-the-machines.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 76 · PG · 1h 50m · Animation/Adventure · on Netflix
Mike Rianda’s family cartoon draws felt-tip doodles over the end of the world, and it is funnier and better-looking than almost anything of its kind. It is also too long and too loud, and its story goes exactly where you expect.
- [*Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train*](https://film.one/film/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba-the-movie-mugen-train.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 57m · Animation/Action
Haruo Sotozaki’s animated fantasy earns its emotion through Kyojuro Rengoku, with detailed images and forceful music adding to the pleasure. We recommend it for action fans, though the insistence can become tiring.
- [*The Croods: A New Age*](https://film.one/film/the-croods-a-new-age.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 35m · Animation/Family · on Peacock
Joel Crawford’s prehistoric family comedy has bright creatures, sharp voice performances and more bustle than it needs. The rivalry between its families is funny enough to make the predictable story worth tolerating.
- [*Wolfwalkers*](https://film.one/film/wolfwalkers.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 84 · PG · 1h 42m · Animation/Family · on Apple TV
Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart draw the town in hard lines and the wood in loose pencil, and it is the best-looking hand-drawn film we have seen in years. The villain is a stick figure and the story a familiar shape. We recommend it anyway.
- [*Jiang Ziya*](https://film.one/film/jiang-ziya.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 65 · 1h 45m · Animation/Action · on Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Tubi
*Jiang Ziya* is worth a look for its striking animation, though the tangled storytelling makes it a qualified choice. Cheng Teng and Li Wei give us plenty to admire and too much difficulty following what matters.
- [*Onward*](https://film.one/film/onward.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 1h 42m · Adventure/Animation · on Disney+
*Onward* is a warm, funny family adventure whose brothers deserve a less predictable quest. The fantasy setting supplies good jokes, but the awkward affection between them gives us a reason to stay.
- [*A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon*](https://film.one/film/a-shaun-the-sheep-movie-farmageddon.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 78 · G · 1h 27m · Family/Comedy · on Netflix
Will Becher and Richard Phelan’s sheep-and-alien adventure is funny, gentle and carefully made. The science-fiction story is familiar and the songs sometimes intrude, but the incidental jokes make this an easy family recommendation.
- [*Frozen II*](https://film.one/film/frozen-ii.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 65 · PG · 1h 43m · Family/Animation · on Disney+
The sisters and the snowman still earn our affection, and the autumn colours suit them. But *Frozen II* gives its likeable company a muddled adventure whose explanations are less involving than its songs.
