# Fantasy films

Fantasy is the genre most likely to mistake money for imagination. What we are actually scoring is whether the invented world has rules it keeps, and whether anyone in it wants something we recognise: a job, a way home, a meal cooked properly. The spirit bathhouse and the hobbit's front door earn their monsters because the housework comes first. Our shelf leans towards animation, and towards films made for families that adults have quietly kept for themselves.

Start with [Spirited Away](/film/spirited-away), 92, which frightens and consoles in the same scene. Then [A Matter of Life and Death](/film/a-matter-of-life-and-death), 92, where heaven is a bureaucracy and the colour is the case for staying alive. Then [The Fellowship of the Ring](/film/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-fellowship-of-the-ring), 90, for anyone who believes they dislike hobbits. After that, try Ratatouille, which takes a rat's ambition seriously, or Fanny and Alexander, which belongs here more than you might expect.

For US. 396 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Practical Magic 2*](https://film.one/film/practical-magic-2.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 48 · PG-13 · 2h 10m · Romance/Fantasy
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman still make convincing sisters, but Susanne Bier’s sequel is a disappointment. A muddled, overlong story leaves their warmth doing most of the work.
- [*The Magic Faraway Tree*](https://film.one/film/the-magic-faraway-tree.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 50m · Adventure/Family
Simon Farnaby’s adaptation of Enid Blyton is bright, kind and often funny, with a cast who know exactly what sort of film they are in. It is also so determined that nothing should worry anyone that not much happens for long.
- [*PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie*](https://film.one/film/paw-patrol-the-dino-movie.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 43 · PG · 1h 28m · Animation/Adventure
Cal Brunker’s family animation has some dinosaur diversion and treats Rex with care, but the thin writing and blunt lessons make it hard to recommend beyond households already devoted to the pups.
- [*Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender*](https://film.one/film/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 39m · Animation/Adventure · on Paramount+
Lauren Montgomery brings Aang and his friends back as adults, and the drawing and the fights are as good as the series ever managed. The story underneath is thin and in a hurry, and it saves its best scenes for people who love these characters.
- [*The Odyssey*](https://film.one/film/the-odyssey.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 83 · R · 2h 53m · Adventure/Action
Christopher Nolan’s Homer is a war film about what happens after the war, shot enormous and acted quietly, and for long stretches it is as good as anything he has made. It is also nearly three hours, and in the middle you feel every one of them.
- [*Moana*](https://film.one/film/moana-2026.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 50 · PG · 1h 55m · Family/Fantasy
Thomas Kail’s live-action Moana follows the 2016 cartoon closely enough to make you wonder why anyone bothered. Catherine Lagaʻaia sings it well and the songs still land, but the sea is a tank, the island a screen, and the adventure has gone.
- [*Minions & Monsters*](https://film.one/film/minions-and-monsters.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 30m · Adventure/Animation
Pierre Coffin’s third standalone Minions film sends its yellow chorus to 1920s Hollywood and, for about an hour, has more ideas about cinema than we expected. Then it becomes the film it always was. Still the best of them.
- [*Masters of the Universe*](https://film.one/film/masters-of-the-universe.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 58 · PG-13 · 2h 21m · Action/Fantasy · on Amazon Prime Video
Travis Knight’s reboot is bright, cheerfully cast and has a Skeletor worth the ticket in Jared Leto. But the script cannot decide whether it is in on the joke or is the joke, and at 141 minutes the winking wears thin.
- [*Mortal Kombat II*](https://film.one/film/mortal-kombat-ii.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 50 · R · 1h 56m · Action/Fantasy · on HBO Max
The tournament the first film promised finally arrives, and Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage is worth the wait. Little around him is: the fights blur into one another, Outworld looks unfinished, and the story is a run of cutscenes between the finishing moves.
- [*The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*](https://film.one/film/the-super-mario-galaxy-movie.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 38 · PG · 1h 38m · Family/Comedy · on Peacock
The brothers go to space and the film goes with them at a sprint, never holding a shot long enough for a joke to land. Handsome to look at, tiring to sit through, and most critics have said so. Poor.
- [*Dry Leaf*](https://film.one/film/dry-leaf.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 71 · NR · 3h 06m · Drama/Fantasy · on MUBI
Aleksandre Koberidze’s three-hour search across rural Georgia is shot on an old mobile phone and looks like nothing else we have seen in a cinema, and there are stretches where it is a trial. For the patient it is worth it, with reservations.
- [*The Bride!*](https://film.one/film/the-bride.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 57 · R · 2h 07m · Science Fiction/Horror · on HBO Max
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein riff has a fearless lead performance from Jessie Buckley and no settled idea what to do with her. It is loud, handsome, thrilling in bursts, and rarely the same film for ten minutes together.
- [*Dracula*](https://film.one/film/dracula-2025.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 55 · R · 2h 10m · Horror/Fantasy
Luc Besson’s Dracula is a lovesick widower in a handsome, silly and almost bloodless romance that never once frightens. Caleb Landry Jones and Christoph Waltz are worth the evening on their own; the script around them is not.
- [*Avatar: Fire and Ash*](https://film.one/film/avatar-fire-and-ash.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 58 · PG-13 · 3h 18m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Disney+
Cameron’s third visit to Pandora is as beautifully built as the first two, and it goes somewhere new only in its scenery. Oona Chaplin’s Varang is a proper villain; the film around her repeats itself for well over three hours.
- [*Wicked: For Good*](https://film.one/film/wicked-for-good.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 2h 17m · Fantasy/Adventure · on Netflix
Jon M. Chu’s second half of *Wicked* gives Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande the songs they deserve and a plot that keeps interrupting them. Handsomely dressed, over-long and dimmer than the first, it is worth the evening for the two of them.
- [*The Twits*](https://film.one/film/the-twits.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 45 · PG · 1h 39m · Animation/Comedy · on Netflix
Margo Martindale and Johnny Vegas make the Twits as foul as Dahl wrote them, and the film spends the rest of its length apologising for them. Grubby, noisy and funny in patches, it is a black comedy with the black rinsed out.
- [*Good Fortune*](https://film.one/film/good-fortune.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 66 · R · 1h 37m · Comedy/Fantasy · on Amazon Prime Video
*Good Fortune* has a funny angel in Keanu Reeves and too much explaining to do. Aziz Ansari’s fantasy comedy is decent company, but its earnest talk about money repeatedly gets in the way of the jokes.
- [*Frankenstein*](https://film.one/film/frankenstein.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 30m · Drama/Fantasy · on Netflix
Del Toro has plainly been planning this for years, and half of it is worth the wait. Jacob Elordi’s Creature is patient and sad and holds the picture together; Oscar Isaac’s Victor spends his half shouting at machinery.
- [*Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle*](https://film.one/film/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba-infinity-castle.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 36m · Animation/Action
Haruo Sotozaki delivers inventive animated combat and gives the demons enough history to make their suffering matter. We recommend it to series followers, with a warning that repeated flashbacks make an already long film feel longer.
- [*Freakier Friday*](https://film.one/film/freakier-friday.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 65 · PG · 1h 50m · Comedy/Fantasy · on Disney+
Twenty-two years on, Lohan and Curtis swap again, and this time take two teenagers with them. Curtis is funny enough to carry it; the four-way plot is not, and the film keeps stopping to check we remember the first one.
- [*KPop Demon Hunters*](https://film.one/film/kpop-demon-hunters.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 76 · PG · 1h 36m · Fantasy/Music · on Netflix
A K-pop trio fights demons between encores, and the film is faster, funnier and better drawn than that sentence suggests. The songs are good, the faces are better, and the story underneath is the ordinary one. Worth your evening, especially with children.
- [*How to Train Your Dragon*](https://film.one/film/how-to-train-your-dragon.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 60 · PG · 2h 05m · Fantasy/Family · on Netflix
Dean DeBlois remakes his own animated film almost shot for shot, with real rock, real weather and a Toothless you could touch. The flying still works and Mason Thames is a fine Hiccup, but it is longer, slower and adds almost nothing the first one lacked.
- [*The Life of Chuck*](https://film.one/film/the-life-of-chuck.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 63 · R · 1h 51m · Fantasy/Drama · on Hulu
Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation has a street-corner dance good enough to justify the ticket, and an end-of-the-world chapter nearly as good. Then it spends its last forty minutes telling us, in words, what it had already shown us.
- [*Fountain of Youth*](https://film.one/film/fountain-of-youth.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 48 · PG-13 · 2h 06m · Adventure/Fantasy · on Apple TV
Guy Ritchie sends a bickering brother and sister round the world after immortality, stages two good chases, and then lets the map take over. Portman, Gleeson and Moayed do what they can; the film explains its treasure at length and never once makes us want it.
- [*A Minecraft Movie*](https://film.one/film/a-minecraft-movie.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 52 · PG · 1h 41m · Family/Fantasy
Jared Hess gets some of his own oddness into a hundred minutes of shouting, and Jason Momoa is funnier than anything written for him. But a game about building whatever you like has been turned into a film that builds it for you, and it looks like it.
- [*Snow White*](https://film.one/film/snow-white.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 47 · PG · 1h 49m · Family/Fantasy · on Disney+
Rachel Zegler sings well enough to carry a better film than this one. Around her, Marc Webb’s remake fusses over its changes, stalls whenever Gal Gadot speaks, and hands the story’s heart to seven digital dwarfs who never look her in the eye.
- [*Ne Zha 2*](https://film.one/film/ne-zha-2.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 67 · NR · 2h 24m · Animation/Action · on HBO Max
Jiaozi’s animated fantasy gives its battles more care than its storytelling. The movement and detail can be absorbing, but 144 minutes of crowded mythology, crude jokes and renewed combat wear down the pleasure.
- [*Nosferatu*](https://film.one/film/nosferatu.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 75 · R · 2h 13m · Horror/Fantasy · on Hulu
English Eggers rebuilds the 1922 vampire film with candlelight, fog and a young woman who is its real subject. It is beautifully made and frightening in stretches, and solemn to a fault in others. Lily-Rose Depp is the reason to go.
- [*The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim*](https://film.one/film/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · PG-13 · 2h 14m · Animation/Fantasy · on HBO Max
Kenji Kamiyama’s hand-drawn prequel has a good king, a decent daughter and a siege that runs out of things to do in the snow. Handsome in stretches, borrowed in others, and not enough of a film to send anyone to on its own.
- [*Moana 2*](https://film.one/film/moana-2.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · PG · 1h 40m · Adventure/Animation · on Disney+
This return to Moana’s ocean is as handsome as the first film and a good deal emptier. The water is a wonder, Cravalho is still the reason to watch, and the new songs go in one ear and out the other.
- [*Flow*](https://film.one/film/flow.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 83 · PG · 1h 25m · Adventure/Animation
Gints Zilbalodis’s wordless film about a cat adrift on a rising sea is patient, exact and more frightening than its U certificate suggests. It drifts in the middle and its ending reaches further than it grasps, but we recommend it, adults included.
- [*Red One*](https://film.one/film/red-one.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 44 · PG-13 · 2h 04m · Action/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video
Jake Kasdan turns the North Pole into a security agency and Santa into a hostage, and J.K. Simmons is the only person on screen who seems to think Christmas is worth saving. A big, grey, joyless machine with one warm bulb in it.
- [*Wicked*](https://film.one/film/wicked.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 2h 42m · Drama/Romance · on Peacock
Jon M. Chu’s film of the first half of the stage musical has two leads worth the ticket in Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and songs staged with care. It is also 162 minutes long and the colours look drained. Good, if musicals are yours.
- [*Megalopolis*](https://film.one/film/megalopolis.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 54 · R · 2h 18m · Science Fiction/Drama
Francis Ford Coppola has paid for his own dream and put all of it on screen at once. Some of it is handsome, some of it is Aubrey Plaza, and none of it says more than the tagline does.
- [*Hoard*](https://film.one/film/hoard.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 75 · 2h 06m · Drama/Romance · on The Roku Channel, Tubi
Luna Carmoon’s *Hoard* makes love and hoarding painfully difficult to separate. Saura Lightfoot-Leon holds this abrasive drama together, though repeated shocks and a wandering pace sometimes make its 126 minutes feel longer.
- [*Beetlejuice Beetlejuice*](https://film.one/film/beetlejuice-beetlejuice.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · PG-13 · 1h 45m · Comedy/Fantasy · on HBO Max
Tim Burton goes back to the house and the haunt he made his name with and has a plainly good time. So do Keaton and O’Hara. The script hands them five plots when two would do, and the fun comes in bursts rather than a stream.
- [*IF*](https://film.one/film/if.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 56 · PG · 1h 44m · Comedy/Fantasy · on Netflix, Paramount+
John Krasinski’s fantasy about abandoned imaginary friends is handsome, sincere and short on jokes, and it never settles what its own world is for. Cailey Fleming holds it together almost single-handed; the film around her keeps changing its mind.
- [*Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire*](https://film.one/film/ghostbusters-frozen-empire.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 52 · PG-13 · 1h 55m · Fantasy/Adventure
Gil Kenan brings the Spenglers to New York and then keeps interrupting them so the old team can wander through. Acaster, Nanjiani and a sewer chase earn their keep; the rest is a family film that keeps losing its family.
- [*Kung Fu Panda 4*](https://film.one/film/kung-fu-panda-4.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 54 · PG · 1h 34m · Action/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video
Po’s fourth outing is brisk, bright and fitfully funny, with Viola Davis’s shape-shifting sorceress the one new thing in it. What is missing is the feeling the earlier films kept underneath the slapstick, and without it the film passes pleasantly and leaves nothing behind.
- [*Madame Web*](https://film.one/film/madame-web.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 38 · PG-13 · 1h 57m · Action/Fantasy · on Disney+
Dakota Johnson’s awkward humour gives *Madame Web* a few welcome laughs. SJ Clarkson’s superhero origin story is otherwise sluggish and over-explained, with fractured action and too little attention paid to the women at its centre.
- [*Soul*](https://film.one/film/soul.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 41m · Animation/Family · on Disney+
Pete Docter makes a funny, moving animation about the pressure to find a purpose. The rules of its soul world need pruning, but Jamie Foxx and the jazz give *Soul* enough life to earn a warm recommendation.
- [*Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom*](https://film.one/film/aquaman-and-the-lost-kingdom.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 45 · PG-13 · 2h 04m · Action/Adventure · on HBO Max
Momoa and Wilson bicker their way across a jungle like a decent buddy comedy, and the film keeps interrupting them with its plot. Everything around them is loud, soft-edged and hard to follow, and it ends on a shrug.
- [*All of Us Strangers*](https://film.one/film/all-of-us-strangers.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 82 · R · 1h 45m · Romance/Drama · on Hulu
Andrew Haigh sends Andrew Scott home to parents who died when he was a boy, and the scenes with Claire Foy and Jamie Bell are as good as anything he has made. The romance beside them is thinner, and the ending leans on the songs.
- [*Wonka*](https://film.one/film/wonka.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 68 · PG · 1h 57m · Comedy/Family · on HBO Max
Paul King brings the Paddington manner to Roald Dahl, and the result is handsome, kind and funny whenever Hugh Grant is on screen. It is also sweet without pause for 117 minutes, and Dahl’s bite is nowhere to be found.
- [*The Boy and the Heron*](https://film.one/film/the-boy-and-the-heron.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 81 · PG-13 · 2h 04m · Animation/Fantasy · on HBO Max
Hayao Miyazaki, back from retirement, sends a grieving boy down a tower into a world of herons, parakeets and spirits. The first hour is as controlled as anything he has made; the second is crowded and given to speeches. We recommend it warmly.
- [*La Chimera*](https://film.one/film/la-chimera.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 84 · NR · 2h 11m · Drama/Fantasy
Alice Rohrwacher’s tale of tomb raiders in 1980s Tuscany is funny, sad and shot with a freedom most films never risk. It wanders for a stretch in the middle, and Josh O’Connor holds it together with a slump and a stare.
- [*The Covenant*](https://film.one/film/the-covenant.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 50 · Drama/History
Two films share this title and year. The one filed here is a scriptural drama with Lior Ashkenazi as Ezra and a narrator; the one the reviews describe is Guy Ritchie’s Afghanistan war film. We cannot recommend a title we cannot identify.
- [*Wish*](https://film.one/film/wish.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 49 · PG · 1h 35m · Animation/Family · on Disney+
Disney’s hundredth-birthday picture is handsome, brief and almost entirely empty. Ariana DeBose sings well and Chris Pine enjoys being wicked, but the story is a collection of nods to better films, and the songs are gone before the credits finish.
- [*Trolls Band Together*](https://film.one/film/trolls-band-together.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 58 · PG · 1h 31m · Animation/Family · on Amazon Prime Video
The third Trolls film is 91 minutes of boy band jokes for the parents and colour for the children, made with real care in the textures and much less in the story. Small children will be happy; nobody else will remember it by Tuesday.
- [*Dream Scenario*](https://film.one/film/dream-scenario.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 42m · Comedy/Fantasy
Kristoffer Borgli hands Nicolas Cage a receding hairline, a parka and the whole world’s dreams, and for an hour the result is a small, sharp, funny film about wanting to be noticed. Then it starts explaining itself, and gets smaller.
- [*Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms*](https://film.one/film/creation-of-the-gods-i-kingdom-of-storms.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 65 · 2h 28m · Action/Fantasy · on Amazon Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Wu Ershan’s fantasy finds its appeal in eccentric touches, especially Wu Yafan’s acrobatic Nezha. Uneven effects and an overbearing score make its 148 minutes a qualified recommendation for fantasy enthusiasts.
- [*The Last Voyage of the Demeter*](https://film.one/film/the-last-voyage-of-the-demeter.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 55 · R · 1h 59m · Horror/Fantasy · on Peacock
André Øvredal builds a real ship, fills it with good actors and then kills them in the order you expect, one a night, on a schedule. Handsome, well acted and rarely frightening; for those who like their horror wet and slow.
- [*Haunted Mansion*](https://film.one/film/haunted-mansion.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 51 · PG-13 · 2h 03m · Comedy/Drama · on Disney+
Justin Simien has a fine cast, a handsome house and a decent idea about grief, and a script that stops every ten minutes to explain the last ten. Pleasant enough for a wet afternoon with children; a shame it is not more.
- [*Barbie*](https://film.one/film/barbie.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 76 · PG-13 · 1h 54m · Comedy/Adventure · on HBO Max
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a proper comedy first, sharp about its own absurdities and built with wit down to the fake water. The second half swaps jokes for speeches, and it is a duller film for as long as it is speaking.
- [*Nimona*](https://film.one/film/nimona.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 1h 39m · Animation/Family · on Netflix
Nick Bruno and Troy Quane’s animated fairytale about a framed knight and a shapeshifting teenager is funnier and better drawn than its plot, which you will see coming from the castle walls. Worth your evening, particularly with a child present.
- [*The Little Mermaid*](https://film.one/film/the-little-mermaid.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 58 · PG · 2h 15m · Adventure/Family · on Disney+
Halle Bailey sings ‘Part of Your World’ as if her life depends on it, and for four minutes the film is alive. Around her, Rob Marshall’s remake is long, murky under the water and afraid to change anything.
- [*Suzume*](https://film.one/film/suzume.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 2h 02m · Animation/Drama · on Crunchyroll, Netflix
Makoto Shinkai sends a schoolgirl and an enchanted chair across Japan to shut the doors that let earthquakes in. The chair is funny, the skies are as good as ever, and the film is sincere about a real disaster; the romance underneath is thin.
- [*Renfield*](https://film.one/film/renfield.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 58 · R · 1h 33m · Comedy/Fantasy · on Peacock
Nicolas Cage is a marvellous Dracula, all Lugosi vowels and wounded vanity, and Nicholas Hoult is exactly the put-upon familiar he needs. Around them Chris McKay has built a gory crime comedy that keeps the two of them apart for most of its 93 minutes.
- [*Beau Is Afraid*](https://film.one/film/beau-is-afraid.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 60 · R · 2h 59m · Comedy/Adventure · on Tubi
Ari Aster’s three-hour comedy of dread has the funniest and most frightening first hour he has made, and then keeps going. Joaquin Phoenix is superb throughout; the film around him loses its shape somewhere in the woods and never quite gets it back.
- [*The Super Mario Bros. Movie*](https://film.one/film/the-super-mario-bros-movie.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 56 · PG · 1h 33m · Family/Comedy · on Peacock
Bright, brisk and dutiful, Horvath and Jelenic’s Mario gets every pipe and mushroom right and gives Jack Black a lava castle to sing in. Children will be happy for ninety minutes, and it has almost nothing to say about the two plumbers in the title.
