# Horror films

Horror is the one genre honest about what it wants from us. It wants us frightened, so the question we put to every film here is simple: were we, and for how long? A jump scare earns a flinch and is forgotten by the car park. The films we score highly make us care about someone first, then make us watch what happens to them, which is why our best-rated horror is about a marriage, a mother or a ship's crew, with the monster arriving second. The shelf leans heavily towards the 2020s, where the genre has been busiest and not always most patient.

Start with [Jaws](/film/jaws) (93), whose people matter as much as its shark; [Alien](/film/alien) (92), which makes confinement frightening before the shocks arrive; and [Don't Look Now](/film/dont-look-now) (90), where the fear grows out of grief. After those, [The Wicker Man](/film/the-wicker-man) and [Get Out](/film/get-out) show how funny a horror film can be without letting us off.

For US. 258 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom*](https://film.one/film/shaun-the-sheep-the-beast-of-mossy-bottom.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · PG · 1h 21m · Animation/Comedy
Aardman’s third Shaun the Sheep feature drops the flock into an old monster film and gets steady laughs out of it for 81 minutes. It is a long episode of the television programme, which is no bad thing, and it is not more than that.
- [*Resident Evil*](https://film.one/film/resident-evil.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 30m · Horror/Science Fiction
Zach Cregger starts again with one frightened man, one delivery and one long night. For an hour it is tight, funny and horrible; then it gets bigger and gets worse. Worth your evening if this is your genre.
- [*Onslaught*](https://film.one/film/onslaught.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 58 · R · 1h 32m · Action/Horror
Adam Wingard goes back to the small siege film he does well, with Adria Arjona holding the door. The style is sure and the score is a pleasure; the film keeps promising a rampage and delivers it in instalments.
- [*Buddy*](https://film.one/film/buddy.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 67 · R · 1h 35m · Horror/Comedy
Casper Kelly’s murderous-unicorn comedy has an affection for children’s television that makes its ugliness amusing. The setting and voice work deserve a tighter film, but there is enough invention here for the curious.
- [*Colony*](https://film.one/film/colony.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 62 · R · 2h 03m · Action/Horror
Yeon Sang-ho’s *Colony* has unnerving infected bodies and a useful new problem: zombies that think together. The action earns attention, but thin characters and repeated explanations make this one for the already interested.
- [*It Ends*](https://film.one/film/it-ends.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 68 · R · 1h 29m · Horror/Mystery
Alexander Ullom’s first film puts four friends on a road that does not end and gets an hour of real dread out of a car and some headlights. Then it keeps going, and dread thins into repetition. Worth an evening if you can forgive that.
- [*Insidious: Out of the Further*](https://film.one/film/insidious-out-of-the-further.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 55 · PG-13 · 1h 46m · Horror/Thriller
Jacob Chase gets useful scares from sofa cushions and dental work, but *Insidious: Out of the Further* cannot keep its family story moving. Amelia Eve deserves more than another round of supernatural explanations.
- [*The Last House*](https://film.one/film/the-last-house.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 54 · PG-13 · 1h 50m · Horror/Science Fiction · on Netflix
Louis Leterrier shuts a family in a house and, for the best part of an hour, trusts that to be enough. It is. Then the film shows us what is outside, and a patient domestic thriller becomes a routine monster picture with a hurried ending.
- [*Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma*](https://film.one/film/teenage-sex-and-death-at-camp-miasma.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 80 · R · 1h 52m · Comedy/Horror
Jane Schoenbrun’s queer horror romance is funny and unexpectedly tender, with Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson making its obsession with films feel personal. The second half wanders, but the two leads keep us interested.
- [*Ice Cream Man*](https://film.one/film/ice-cream-man.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 34 · NR · 1h 26m · Horror/Comedy
Eli Roth’s killer-kids horror has one idea, an ice cream van whose treats turn a suburb’s children on their parents, and spends 86 minutes repeating it. The practical gore is committed; the script and the jokes are not, and most critics are right about it.
- [*Soulm8te*](https://film.one/film/soulm8te.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 53 · R · 1h 39m · Horror/Science Fiction
Lily Sullivan is quietly good twice over, as the dead wife and the machine that wears her face, and Kate Dolan shoots the house with care. The script around them has one scare, one idea and a list to get through.
- [*Nightborn*](https://film.one/film/nightborn.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 62 · 1h 32m · Horror · on AMC+
Hanna Bergholm’s second horror film has a furious performance from Seidi Haarla at its centre and one good, mean joke about never being believed. Around them the folk-horror machinery turns much as you would expect, and the comedy lands about half the time.
- [*Her Private Hell*](https://film.one/film/her-private-hell.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 41 · R · 1h 50m · Science Fiction/Horror
Nicolas Winding Refn’s return to features has a superb score, a fine set of rooms and Kristine Froseth being funny in them, and then it asks us to watch beautiful people say very little, very slowly, for a hundred and ten minutes. We could not.
- [*Evil Dead Burn*](https://film.one/film/evil-dead-burn.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 55 · R · 1h 50m · Horror
Sébastien Vaniček’s spin-off is the most brutal film to carry the name, and Souheila Yacoub holds it together. But it has traded the series’ mischief for a domestic-abuse allegory it states rather than dramatises, and by the hour mark the gore has stopped landing.
- [*Leviticus*](https://film.one/film/leviticus.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 80 · R · 1h 28m · Horror/Romance
The boys’ romance is reason enough to watch Adrian Chiarella’s unsettling horror film. Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen make the attraction convincing, though some blunt dialogue and a late dip in tension need forgiving.
- [*Backrooms*](https://film.one/film/backrooms.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 51m · Horror/Mystery
For an hour, the hum of the strip lights and the damp yellow carpet of Kane Parsons’ maze are as frightening as anything we have sat through in some time. Then the script starts explaining, and the fear drains out room by room.
- [*Obsession*](https://film.one/film/obsession.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 79 · R · 1h 49m · Horror/Thriller · on Peacock
Curry Barker’s horror about a man who wishes a woman would love him, and gets her, is nasty, funny and properly frightening, and Inde Navarrette is the reason. It is not subtle, and one killing tips into cartoon. Horror fans should go.
- [*Hokum*](https://film.one/film/hokum.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 48m · Horror/Thriller
Damian McCarthy’s third film puts Adam Scott in a rural Irish hotel with a witch upstairs and frightens us properly for an hour. Then it piles on more plot than it can carry. Good, jumpy and a little untidy; worth your evening if horror is yours.
- [*Mārama*](https://film.one/film/marama.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 29m · Horror/Drama · on AMC+
Taratoa Stappard’s first film puts a Māori woman inside the English gothic house and lets Ariāna Osborne hold the screen from the first shot to the last. It loses its nerve for a stretch in the second half. Worth your evening if you like your horror slow.
- [*Exit 8*](https://film.one/film/exit-8.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · PG-13 · 1h 35m · Horror/Mystery · on AMC+
Genki Kawamura turns a spot-the-difference video game into a white-tiled nightmare about a man who cannot decide anything, and for an hour it is quietly frightening. Then it sits down to explain itself, and the corridor loses its grip.
- [*The Yeti*](https://film.one/film/the-yeti.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 42 · R · 1h 33m · Horror/Thriller · on AMC+
The yeti is a proper practical creature and Brittany Allen gives it someone worth chasing. Around them, Gene Gallerano and William Pisciotta have made a film that cannot decide whether it is frightened, sad or joking, and settles for slow.
- [*Dolly*](https://film.one/film/dolly.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 46 · R · 1h 23m · Horror · on AMC+
Rod Blackhurst has the grain, the woods and, in Max the Impaler, a monster worth the film stock. What he does not have is a second idea: after a fierce opening, Dolly says the same thing about motherhood for eighty minutes and then stops.
- [*The Bride!*](https://film.one/film/the-bride.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 57 · R · 2h 07m · Science Fiction/Horror · on HBO Max
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein riff has a fearless lead performance from Jessie Buckley and no settled idea what to do with her. It is loud, handsome, thrilling in bursts, and rarely the same film for ten minutes together.
- [*Scream 7*](https://film.one/film/scream-7.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 48 · R · 1h 54m · Horror/Mystery · on Paramount+
Kevin Williamson directs his own script at last, Neve Campbell is back and on form, and the film around them is the least sharp the series has produced. Competent murders in the dark, suspects you will spot from the sofa. For the faithful, and only just.
- [*Dracula*](https://film.one/film/dracula-2025.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 55 · R · 2h 10m · Horror/Fantasy
Luc Besson’s Dracula is a lovesick widower in a handsome, silly and almost bloodless romance that never once frightens. Caleb Landry Jones and Christoph Waltz are worth the evening on their own; the script around them is not.
- [*Send Help*](https://film.one/film/send-help.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 53m · Horror/Thriller · on Hulu
Sam Raimi strands a mousy employee and her boss on an island and lets her chair the meeting. Rachel McAdams is superb and the gore is cheerfully vile; the script has fewer ideas than she does. Worth your evening if you can stomach it.
- [*28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*](https://film.one/film/28-years-later-the-bone-temple.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 49m · Horror/Thriller · on Netflix
Ralph Fiennes, a tower of skulls and a Duran Duran record give Nia DaCosta’s sequel its best hour. Jack O’Connell’s cult of tracksuited Jimmys gives it its loudest and least interesting, and the film is only as good as whichever half is on screen.
- [*Black Phone 2*](https://film.one/film/black-phone-2.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 54m · Horror/Thriller · on Netflix
Scott Derrickson takes his dead killer out of the basement and into the snow, and the dream sequences, shot on grainy, skipping film, are the best thing in either picture. Around them sits a great deal of explaining, and a sermon we did not order.
- [*Frankenstein*](https://film.one/film/frankenstein.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 30m · Drama/Fantasy · on Netflix
Del Toro has plainly been planning this for years, and half of it is worth the wait. Jacob Elordi’s Creature is patient and sad and holds the picture together; Oscar Isaac’s Victor spends his half shouting at machinery.
- [*HIM*](https://film.one/film/him.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 48 · R · 1h 36m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
Marlon Wayans supplies menace, and the football violence has an unpleasant force. But *HIM* smothers its promising subject in blunt symbolism and confused plotting, leaving too few scares to reward the effort.
- [*The Long Walk*](https://film.one/film/the-long-walk.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 48m · Science Fiction/Thriller · on HBO Max
Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s death march is grim, honest about what it shows, and carried by Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson. It has a single idea and walks it for 108 minutes; the idea holds longer than we expected, though not all the way.
- [*The Conjuring: Last Rites*](https://film.one/film/the-conjuring-last-rites.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 55 · R · 2h 16m · Horror · on HBO Max
Wilson and Farmiga are as good as they have ever been, and the first hour has two frights worth the ticket. Then the Smurls are left to their ghost while the Warrens attend to their feelings, and 136 minutes is a long time to say goodbye.
- [*Weapons*](https://film.one/film/weapons.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 75 · R · 2h 09m · Horror/Mystery · on Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max
Zach Cregger’s follow-up to *Barbarian* is a horror-mystery about a class of children who vanish in the night, told chapter by chapter and made with skill. The first hour frightened us; the last half hour is louder and sillier, and we liked it less.
- [*28 Years Later*](https://film.one/film/28-years-later.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 76 · R · 1h 55m · Horror/Thriller · on Netflix
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland go back to the Britain they emptied in *28 Days Later* and find it stranger and sadder than they left it. For an hour and three quarters this is a frightening, thoughtful horror film. Then come the last five minutes.
- [*Bring Her Back*](https://film.one/film/bring-her-back.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 44m · Horror · on HBO Max
Sally Hawkins plays a foster mother who is kind, funny and attentive, and she is the most frightening thing in the film. The Philippou brothers’ second feature is grimmer and better built than their first, and it explains itself more than it needs to.
- [*Final Destination Bloodlines*](https://film.one/film/final-destination-bloodlines.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 50m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max
The sixth *Final Destination* film opens with the best twenty minutes the series has managed and then spends ninety more trying to match them. It cannot, quite, but the deaths are inventive, the jokes land and Gabrielle Rose gives it a heart.
- [*Sinners*](https://film.one/film/sinners.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 79 · R · 2h 18m · Horror/Action · on HBO Max
Ryan Coogler’s vampire film about a juke joint in 1932 Mississippi is at its best before the vampires arrive, and the hour of music that opens it is as good as anything he has made. The siege that follows is well staged and more ordinary.
- [*Companion*](https://film.one/film/companion.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 37m · Horror/Science Fiction · on HBO Max
Drew Hancock’s first film as director is quick, nasty and well acted, and Sophie Thatcher is reason enough to see it. It also says everything it has to say about men like Josh in the first half hour, then keeps saying it with knives.
- [*Wolf Man*](https://film.one/film/wolf-man.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 54 · R · 1h 43m · Horror/Thriller · on Peacock
Leigh Whannell takes the change slowly and lets us hear the world go wrong inside Blake’s head, and those passages are the best thing here. Around them is a family we never get to know, in a house we can barely see.
- [*Nosferatu*](https://film.one/film/nosferatu.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 75 · R · 2h 13m · Horror/Fantasy · on Hulu
English Eggers rebuilds the 1922 vampire film with candlelight, fog and a young woman who is its real subject. It is beautifully made and frightening in stretches, and solemn to a fault in others. Lily-Rose Depp is the reason to go.
- [*Nightbitch*](https://film.one/film/nightbitch.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 56 · R · 1h 38m · Comedy/Horror · on Hulu
Marielle Heller’s adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s novel has Amy Adams as a mother who may be turning into a dog. Adams is fearless and frequently funny; the film around her keeps announcing a transformation it then declines to go through with.
- [*Heretic*](https://film.one/film/heretic.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 51m · Thriller/Horror · on Hulu
Hugh Grant turns thirty years of bashful charm into something you back away from, and for an hour this locked-house horror is sharp, funny and properly tense. Then the second half arrives, and it is the ordinary horror film the first half had been laughing at.
- [*Smile 2*](https://film.one/film/smile-2.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · R · 2h 07m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix, Paramount+
Parker Finn’s sequel moves the grinning curse from a psychiatrist’s office to a pop star’s comeback tour, and Naomi Scott gives it more than it deserves. It is loud, long and frightening in bursts, and it plays the same trick until we stopped flinching.
- [*Terrifier 3*](https://film.one/film/terrifier-3.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 60 · NR · 2h 05m · Horror · on Amazon Prime Video
Damien Leone’s third Terrifier film is the most capably made of the three and the longest-feeling. David Howard Thornton’s silent Santa is a small marvel of malice and timing; nearly everything around him is padding, and there are 125 minutes of it.
- [*The Substance*](https://film.one/film/the-substance.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 21m · Horror/Science Fiction · on HBO Max, MUBI
Coralie Fargeat’s horror about a television star who splits herself into a younger model is loud, bright and superbly made, and Demi Moore is remarkable in it. It says one thing many times over 141 minutes. If you can stomach it, it is worth your evening.
- [*Speak No Evil*](https://film.one/film/speak-no-evil.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 66 · R · 1h 50m · Horror/Thriller
James Watkins’s remake of the Danish original is at its best when nothing happens: two families at a table, McAvoy pouring the wine, the Daltons too polite to leave. Once the film lets the knives out it becomes something more ordinary, and less frightening.
- [*Blink Twice*](https://film.one/film/blink-twice.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 43m · Horror/Mystery
Zoë Kravitz’s first film as director looks handsome, is well cast and is funny about rich men who talk like their therapists. It borrows its shape from *Get Out* and, once the mystery is out, has less to say than it thinks.
- [*Alien: Romulus*](https://film.one/film/alien-romulus.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 59m · Horror/Science Fiction · on Hulu
Fede Álvarez has made the most frightening *Alien* film in decades by rebuilding the first two, piece by piece. It is expertly done and we jumped often. We also spent much of it recognising things, which is not the same as being surprised.
- [*Trap*](https://film.one/film/trap.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 58 · PG-13 · 1h 45m · Crime/Horror · on Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max
Shyamalan hands Josh Hartnett a serial killer with a teenage daughter and a pop concert ringed by police, and for an hour it is a sly, funny cat-and-mouse. Then the film leaves the building, and most of the plotting goes with it.
- [*Longlegs*](https://film.one/film/longlegs.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 41m · Crime/Horror · on Hulu
Osgood Perkins’ FBI horror is as frightening as its reputation for most of its length, thanks to Andres Arochi’s boxed-in frames and a Nicolas Cage kept wisely scarce. Then it stops to explain itself, and the fear goes out of it.
- [*MaXXXine*](https://film.one/film/maxxxine.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 58 · R · 1h 43m · Horror · on HBO Max, Hulu
Ti West closes his trilogy with a Hollywood slasher that gets 1985 right in every shop window and never finds a story to walk down the street. Mia Goth is as fierce as before; the film around her is thin, and it is not frightening.
- [*A Quiet Place: Day One*](https://film.one/film/a-quiet-place-day-one.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · PG-13 · 1h 40m · Horror/Science Fiction · on Netflix, Paramount+
Michael Sarnoski’s prequel is the smallest film in the series and the best, a sad and tender two-hander carried by Lupita Nyong’o. The monster sequences are the least of it, and by the second half they have started to repeat themselves.
- [*I Saw the TV Glow*](https://film.one/film/i-saw-the-tv-glow.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 74 · PG-13 · 1h 40m · Drama/Horror
Jane Schoenbrun’s horror film about a boy, a girl and a cancelled television show is quietly, seriously unsettling for an hour. Then it slows to a crawl and tells us what it means. Worth your evening, if you can sit still for it.
- [*Abigail*](https://film.one/film/abigail.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 49m · Horror/Thriller
Radio Silence turn a kidnap film into a vampire film, with a superb small monster in Alisha Weir and bodies that burst rather than bleed. It is also twenty minutes too long and cannot stop explaining its own rules.
- [*The First Omen*](https://film.one/film/the-first-omen.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 59m · Horror · on Amazon Prime Video
Arkasha Stevenson’s first feature is the most frightening thing to carry the Omen name since the original, with one delivery-room scene we will not forget in a hurry. Then the plot has to reach 1976, and the last half hour lies down and lets it.
- [*Immaculate*](https://film.one/film/immaculate.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 29m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
Michael Mohan’s convent horror is handsomely lit, briskly cut and for most of its 89 minutes the film you expect. Then Sydney Sweeney, who also produces, drags it somewhere nastier and better, and for a quarter of an hour it is worth the wait.
- [*Late Night with the Devil*](https://film.one/film/late-night-with-the-devil.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 33m · Horror · on AMC+, Hulu
The Cairnes brothers rebuild a 1977 chat show down to the last flared lapel and let a demon loose on it, and for an hour it is the sharpest horror film we have seen in a while. Then it stops trusting its own format.
- [*Godzilla Minus One*](https://film.one/film/godzilla-minus-one.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 81 · PG-13 · 2h 05m · Science Fiction/Horror · on Netflix
Yamazaki puts Godzilla back in the ruins of 1945 and makes him frightening again, with a boat chase and a night attack as good as anything in the series. The people around him say what they feel at full volume, and then say it again.
- [*Thanksgiving*](https://film.one/film/thanksgiving.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 46m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max, Hulu
Eli Roth’s holiday slasher opens with a Black Friday riot that is funnier and nastier than anything that follows it. The kills are inventive and the tone is right; the whodunnit around them is thin, and the middle hour marks time.
- [*Five Nights at Freddy's*](https://film.one/film/five-nights-at-freddys.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 42 · PG-13 · 1h 50m · Horror/Thriller · on Peacock
Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has built a band of superb animatronics, and Emma Tammi’s film keeps them on the stage while Josh Hutcherson has bad dreams in another room. Worth a look for the puppets; not much of a horror film.
