# Mystery films

A mystery makes us want to know something and then decides how much to tell us. The solution is the least of it. What we are judging is the looking: whether the film is honest about what it withholds, whether the detective's curiosity costs him anything, and whether we would keep watching if the answer were handed over early. Hitchcock is here more often than anyone else, which tells you where our sympathies lie.

Start with [Rear Window](/film/rear-window), 94, the best thing on the shelf and funny about a man who cannot stop staring; then [Chinatown](/film/chinatown), 93, a detective story for people who avoid detective stories; then [The Third Man](/film/the-third-man), 92, for Joseph Cotten's writer and the friend he should not excuse. After those, try [Vertigo](/film/vertigo) or [Mulholland Drive](/film/mulholland-drive), where the mystery is mostly the person doing the looking.

For US. 260 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Hope*](https://film.one/film/hope.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · R · 2h 37m · Science Fiction/Mystery
Na Hong-jin’s creature feature has enough wit and well-staged pursuit to make its excesses worth enduring. We recommend it for the action, with fair warning that the creatures are less convincing than the chases.
- [*It Ends*](https://film.one/film/it-ends.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 68 · R · 1h 29m · Horror/Mystery
Alexander Ullom’s first film puts four friends on a road that does not end and gets an hour of real dread out of a car and some headlights. Then it keeps going, and dread thins into repetition. Worth an evening if you can forgive that.
- [*The End of Oak Street*](https://film.one/film/the-end-of-oak-street.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 66 · PG-13 · 1h 40m · Science Fiction/Mystery
David Robert Mitchell’s dinosaurs-in-suburbia picture is brisk, handsome and often frightening, and Anne Hathaway carries it. The family drama it keeps setting up is never played out, and the ending steps back from the darker film it had been promising.
- [*Rose of Nevada*](https://film.one/film/rose-of-nevada.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 79 · NR · 1h 54m · Mystery/Drama
Mark Jenkin’s Cornish time-slip tale is his handsomest and most watchable film, with a first hour that put us right on the deck. The middle drifts while it decides what its mystery is for, but the sea and the two men hold.
- [*Backrooms*](https://film.one/film/backrooms.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 51m · Horror/Mystery
For an hour, the hum of the strip lights and the damp yellow carpet of Kane Parsons’ maze are as frightening as anything we have sat through in some time. Then the script starts explaining, and the fear drains out room by room.
- [*The Sheep Detectives*](https://film.one/film/the-sheep-detectives.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 76 · PG · 1h 49m · Comedy/Family · on Amazon Prime Video
Kyle Balda’s farmyard whodunnit is funny and unexpectedly moving, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus giving its sheep detective a persuasive voice. The human characters are less convincing, and the cosy mystery sometimes struggles to keep up with the flock.
- [*Mārama*](https://film.one/film/marama.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 29m · Horror/Drama · on AMC+
Taratoa Stappard’s first film puts a Māori woman inside the English gothic house and lets Ariāna Osborne hold the screen from the first shot to the last. It loses its nerve for a stretch in the second half. Worth your evening if you like your horror slow.
- [*Exit 8*](https://film.one/film/exit-8.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · PG-13 · 1h 35m · Horror/Mystery · on AMC+
Genki Kawamura turns a spot-the-difference video game into a white-tiled nightmare about a man who cannot decide anything, and for an hour it is quietly frightening. Then it sits down to explain itself, and the corridor loses its grip.
- [*Scream 7*](https://film.one/film/scream-7.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 48 · R · 1h 54m · Horror/Mystery · on Paramount+
Kevin Williamson directs his own script at last, Neve Campbell is back and on form, and the film around them is the least sharp the series has produced. Competent murders in the dark, suspects you will spot from the sofa. For the faithful, and only just.
- [*The Housemaid*](https://film.one/film/the-housemaid.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 66 · R · 2h 11m · Mystery/Thriller · on Starz
Paul Feig’s adaptation of the airport-novel hit is an hour of polite drift followed by an hour of proper trash, and Amanda Seyfried is the reason to sit through the first to reach the second. It is fun; it is also 131 minutes.
- [*Zootopia 2*](https://film.one/film/zootopia-2.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 48m · Animation/Adventure · on Disney+
Howard and Bush’s sequel is quick, dense and often funny, and Ke Huy Quan’s Gary De’Snake is Disney’s best new character in some time. The mystery around him is busier and less sure-footed than the first film’s.
- [*Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery*](https://film.one/film/wake-up-dead-man-a-knives-out-mystery.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 77 · PG-13 · 2h 25m · Thriller/Mystery · on Netflix
Rian Johnson’s third Benoit Blanc mystery is colder and more serious than the last, and Josh O’Connor’s young priest gives it a heart. It is also 145 minutes long, and half a dozen good actors spend most of them waiting for a line.
- [*It Was Just an Accident*](https://film.one/film/it-was-just-an-accident.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 84 · PG-13 · 1h 43m · Drama/Thriller · on Hulu
Jafar Panahi, filming without permission after his own spell in prison, puts a torturer in the back of a van and lets his victims argue over him for a hundred minutes. It is funny, frightening and morally serious, and it talks a little too much.
- [*HIM*](https://film.one/film/him.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 48 · R · 1h 36m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
Marlon Wayans supplies menace, and the football violence has an unpleasant force. But *HIM* smothers its promising subject in blunt symbolism and confused plotting, leaving too few scares to reward the effort.
- [*The Thursday Murder Club*](https://film.one/film/the-thursday-murder-club.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 57 · PG-13 · 1h 58m · Comedy/Mystery · on Netflix
Chris Columbus gives Richard Osman’s retirees a cast most directors would wait a career for and then forgets to make the murder matter. Mirren, Brosnan, Kingsley and Imrie are excellent company; the mystery they are solving is not.
- [*Weapons*](https://film.one/film/weapons.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 75 · R · 2h 09m · Horror/Mystery · on Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max
Zach Cregger’s follow-up to *Barbarian* is a horror-mystery about a class of children who vanish in the night, told chapter by chapter and made with skill. The first hour frightened us; the last half hour is louder and sillier, and we liked it less.
- [*Fountain of Youth*](https://film.one/film/fountain-of-youth.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 48 · PG-13 · 2h 06m · Adventure/Fantasy · on Apple TV
Guy Ritchie sends a bickering brother and sister round the world after immortality, stages two good chases, and then lets the map take over. Portman, Gleeson and Moayed do what they can; the film explains its treasure at length and never once makes us want it.
- [*Final Destination Bloodlines*](https://film.one/film/final-destination-bloodlines.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 50m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max
The sixth *Final Destination* film opens with the best twenty minutes the series has managed and then spends ninety more trying to match them. It cannot, quite, but the deaths are inventive, the jokes land and Gabrielle Rose gives it a heart.
- [*Black Bag*](https://film.one/film/black-bag.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 78 · R · 1h 34m · Drama/Mystery · on Peacock
Soderbergh’s mole hunt among married spies is brisk, sharp and beautifully dressed, and it plays its 94 minutes like a parlour game. Fassbender and Blanchett make the marriage worth believing in; the mystery underneath is neater than it is gripping.
- [*Detective Chinatown 1900*](https://film.one/film/detective-chinatown-1900.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 54 · 2h 15m · Comedy/Mystery
The slapstick earns a few laughs and Chow Yun-Fat gives the crowded mystery some authority. But predictable plotting and heavy-handed politics make 135 minutes feel longer than the jokes can justify.
- [*Smile 2*](https://film.one/film/smile-2.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · R · 2h 07m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix, Paramount+
Parker Finn’s sequel moves the grinning curse from a psychiatrist’s office to a pop star’s comeback tour, and Naomi Scott gives it more than it deserves. It is loud, long and frightening in bursts, and it plays the same trick until we stopped flinching.
- [*Blink Twice*](https://film.one/film/blink-twice.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 43m · Horror/Mystery
Zoë Kravitz’s first film as director looks handsome, is well cast and is funny about rich men who talk like their therapists. It borrows its shape from *Get Out* and, once the mystery is out, has less to say than it thinks.
- [*Longlegs*](https://film.one/film/longlegs.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 41m · Crime/Horror · on Hulu
Osgood Perkins’ FBI horror is as frightening as its reputation for most of its length, thanks to Andres Arochi’s boxed-in frames and a Nicolas Cage kept wisely scarce. Then it stops to explain itself, and the fear goes out of it.
- [*Wicked Little Letters*](https://film.one/film/wicked-little-letters.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 61 · R · 1h 40m · Comedy/Drama
Thea Sharrock’s poison-pen comedy has Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and a script that swears like a docker, and for half an hour that is enough. Then the joke wears thin, the mystery solves itself and the film backs away from the sadder story it keeps glimpsing.
- [*Immaculate*](https://film.one/film/immaculate.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 29m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
Michael Mohan’s convent horror is handsomely lit, briskly cut and for most of its 89 minutes the film you expect. Then Sydney Sweeney, who also produces, drags it somewhere nastier and better, and for a quarter of an hour it is worth the wait.
- [*Leave the World Behind*](https://film.one/film/leave-the-world-behind.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 60 · R · 2h 20m · Drama/Mystery · on Netflix
Sam Esmail’s apocalypse fits inside one expensive house, and for an hour it is tense, funny and handsomely made. Then it starts telling us what it means, and it means less than it thinks; Roberts is the reason to stay.
- [*Thanksgiving*](https://film.one/film/thanksgiving.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 46m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max, Hulu
Eli Roth’s holiday slasher opens with a Black Friday riot that is funnier and nastier than anything that follows it. The kills are inventive and the tone is right; the whodunnit around them is thin, and the middle hour marks time.
- [*Anatomy of a Fall*](https://film.one/film/anatomy-of-a-fall.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 86 · R · 2h 31m · Thriller/Mystery · on Netflix
Justine Triet’s courtroom drama refuses to say whether Sandra Hüller’s novelist pushed her husband, and is the better for it. Hüller is remarkable, the script is exact, and the 151 minutes could lose ten without anyone noticing.
- [*Saw X*](https://film.one/film/saw-x.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 58m · Horror/Mystery
The tenth Saw film puts Tobin Bell at the centre for the first time and he holds it: patient, weary and frightening. The traps are as vile as the series has managed; the trouble is a running time that stretches revenge into a lecture.
- [*A Haunting in Venice*](https://film.one/film/a-haunting-in-venice.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 65 · PG-13 · 1h 44m · Mystery/Thriller
Branagh’s third Poirot is his best: one leaking palazzo, one stormy night, a camera that leans at everything. The mood holds for an hour; the mystery underneath it is thin, its clues obvious and its solution rushed through in a single room.
- [*Medusa Deluxe*](https://film.one/film/medusa-deluxe.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 41m · Comedy/Mystery · on Tubi
Thomas Hardiman’s debut is a whodunnit staged as one unbroken shot around a hairdressing contest, and the shot is the achievement. It is funny, Clare Perkins is superb, and the murder is the least interesting thing in the building.
- [*Full River Red*](https://film.one/film/full-river-red.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 68 · NR · 2h 37m · Mystery/Comedy · on Tubi
Zhang Yimou’s murder mystery earns its laughs through Shen Teng and Jackson Yee, but stretches its complications too far. The pair make it worth considering; at 157 minutes, the film asks rather more patience than the case deserves.
- [*Missing*](https://film.one/film/missing.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 64 · PG-13 · 1h 51m · Drama/Mystery · on Tubi
The screen-bound follow-up to *Searching* is quick, clever and, for an hour, properly tense. Then the twists arrive in a queue, and a story that ran on plausibility starts spending it. Storm Reid holds it together longer than the script deserves.
- [*The Eternal Daughter*](https://film.one/film/the-eternal-daughter.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 76 · PG-13 · 1h 36m · Drama/Mystery · on Tubi
Joanna Hogg’s foggy ghost story has Tilda Swinton play both a film-maker and her ageing mother in an empty Welsh hotel. It is slow and barely frightening, but the sadness under it is real and it stayed with us.
- [*Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery*](https://film.one/film/glass-onion-a-knives-out-mystery.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 72 · PG-13 · 2h 20m · Comedy/Crime · on Netflix
Rian Johnson’s second Benoit Blanc mystery is bigger, sunnier and more elaborately built than the first, and Janelle Monáe gives it something to care about. It is also 140 minutes long, aims its satire at the easiest targets available, and explains its cleverness twice.
- [*The Wonder*](https://film.one/film/the-wonder.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 63 · R · 1h 48m · Drama/Mystery · on Netflix
Sebastián Lelio’s adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel is beautifully shot and anchored by Florence Pugh. It is also wrapped in a framing device that keeps tapping us on the shoulder, and the last half hour gives away much of what the first hour built.
- [*The Good Nurse*](https://film.one/film/the-good-nurse.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 73 · R · 2h 01m · Drama/Crime · on Netflix
Tobias Lindholm’s hospital crime drama is worth seeing for Jessica Chastain’s patient, believable Amy Loughren. The procedural passages are less persuasive, and its criticism of the healthcare system needs more attention than it gets.
- [*Decision to Leave*](https://film.one/film/decision-to-leave.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 82 · NR · 2h 19m · Thriller/Mystery · on MUBI
Park Chan-wook’s quietest film is a murder inquiry with a love story where its case should be, and the love story is the best thing he has made in years. The second half ties itself in plot it does not need; Tang Wei and Park Hae-il untie it.
- [*Amsterdam*](https://film.one/film/amsterdam.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 47 · R · 2h 14m · Mystery/Comedy · on Hulu
*Amsterdam* has appealing friends and a conspiracy that keeps getting in their way. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington supply warmth, but the crowded plotting and uncertain comedy make this a frustrating evening.
- [*See How They Run*](https://film.one/film/see-how-they-run.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 70 · PG-13 · 1h 39m · Mystery/Comedy
Saoirse Ronan’s comic timing makes this theatrical whodunit worth an evening. The period trimmings and her partnership with Sam Rockwell are more reliable pleasures than a mystery too pleased with its own cleverness.
- [*Barbarian*](https://film.one/film/barbarian.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 43m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max
Zach Cregger’s horror debut gets an hour of fear out of a double-booked rental and a basement nobody should go into. Then it starts explaining, and the explanation is thinner than the dread. Worth your evening, if you can take the dark.
- [*The Batman*](https://film.one/film/the-batman.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 74 · PG-13 · 2h 57m · Crime/Mystery · on HBO Max
Matt Reeves has made a Batman film that is mainly a detective story, and for two hours it is a good one: wet, patient, frightening and superbly photographed. The third hour trades the mystery for a spectacle it did not need.
- [*Uncharted*](https://film.one/film/uncharted.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 50 · PG-13 · 1h 56m · Action/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu
Tom Holland brings welcome energy to a thin adventure, but the jokes and his partnership with Mark Wahlberg keep falling flat. There is occasional fun in the action, and little reason to care between the set pieces.
- [*Kimi*](https://film.one/film/kimi.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 29m · Thriller/Mystery · on HBO Max
Soderbergh and Koepp build a lean, old-fashioned thriller around a smart speaker and a woman who cannot cross her own doorstep, and Zoë Kravitz carries it easily. The first half is close to perfect; the second is a chase we have seen before.
- [*Scream*](https://film.one/film/scream-2022.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 66 · R · 1h 54m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
The fifth *Scream* is a bloody, well-built slasher with a fine opening and a David Arquette we did not expect, wrapped in so much talk about sequels that it forgets to be frightening. Worth it for the kills, if you can sit through the seminar.
- [*Last Night in Soho*](https://film.one/film/last-night-in-soho.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 57m · Horror/Mystery
Edgar Wright’s Soho thriller is carried by its two leads and the pull of its sixties nightclubs. The music beguiles, but a cluttered murder mystery and repetitive scares make the second half a disappointment.
- [*Pig*](https://film.one/film/pig.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 82 · R · 1h 32m · Drama/Thriller
Michael Sarnoski’s first film sets up a revenge story about a stolen pig and declines to tell it. Nicolas Cage barely raises his voice and is as good as he has been in years, though the script keeps saying what his face already has.
- [*Fear Street: 1994*](https://film.one/film/fear-street-1994.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 48m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
Leigh Janiak makes the teenagers worth caring about and the violence unpleasant enough to matter. The lengthy setup holds back an otherwise lively slasher, best suited to viewers already fond of the genre.
- [*Detective Chinatown 3*](https://film.one/film/detective-chinatown-3.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 49 · 2h 16m · Action/Comedy
Chen Sicheng gets real laughs from an outsized airport brawl, but the case is less rewarding. A muddled mystery and awkward melodrama keep this busy detective comedy short of a recommendation.
- [*Saint Maud*](https://film.one/film/saint-maud.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 82 · R · 1h 25m · Horror/Mystery · on Amazon Prime Video
Rose Glass’s first film is short, exact and frightening, and Morfydd Clark makes a saint of a woman you would cross the road to avoid. It loses its footing for a stretch in the middle, and it does not matter much. We recommend it.
- [*The White Tiger*](https://film.one/film/the-white-tiger.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 78 · R · 2h 05m · Drama/Crime · on Netflix
Ramin Bahrani’s class satire is sharp, darkly funny and carried by Adarsh Gourav’s absorbing performance. The middle takes too long to make its points, but the humiliations of service give its anger weight.
- [*Rebecca*](https://film.one/film/rebecca-2020.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 49 · PG-13 · 2h 03m · Romance/Drama · on Netflix
Ben Wheatley’s *Rebecca* offers carefully made rooms and one properly unsettling performance from Kristin Scott Thomas. The romance remains thin, though, and the late rush leaves too little suspense to justify the wait.
- [*Knives Out*](https://film.one/film/knives-out.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 81 · PG-13 · 2h 11m · Comedy/Crime
Rian Johnson’s country-house mystery is funny, carefully plotted and anchored by Ana de Armas. We recommend it warmly, though some family members are drawn too broadly and the dialogue occasionally seems to wait for applause.
- [*Midsommar*](https://film.one/film/midsommar.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 79 · R · 2h 27m · Horror/Drama · on HBO Max, Tubi
Ari Aster makes a relationship falling apart painfully convincing inside an unnerving, sunlit folk horror. Florence Pugh gives the film its force, though the elaborate festivities run longer than they need to.
- [*The Vast of Night*](https://film.one/film/the-vast-of-night.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 78 · PG-13 · 1h 31m · Drama/Mystery
Andrew Patterson’s first film is a 1950s alien-visitation story told almost entirely down telephone lines and over the airwaves, and for eighty minutes it is one of the most confident debuts we have seen. Then it shows us what it should have kept hidden.
- [*Us*](https://film.one/film/us.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 78 · R · 1h 56m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max
Jordan Peele’s *Us* is frightening and funny, led by Lupita Nyong’o in two unsettling performances. The explanations are less persuasive; horror fans should still find plenty to fear.
- [*Holmes & Watson*](https://film.one/film/holmes-and-watson.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 24 · PG-13 · 1h 30m · Comedy/Mystery · on Netflix, Pluto TV
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly bring little warmth to a Sherlock Holmes spoof that mistakes strained accents and anachronisms for jokes. A few supporting performances offer relief, but this is a wearying use of 90 minutes.
- [*Burning*](https://film.one/film/burning.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 86 · R · 2h 28m · Mystery/Drama · on MUBI, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Lee Chang-dong turns a romantic triangle into a patient, unnerving thriller about money and jealousy. The uncertainty occasionally feels prolonged, but the three leads make small differences in confidence and desire worth watching.
- [*Hereditary*](https://film.one/film/hereditary.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 83 · R · 2h 08m · Horror/Mystery · on HBO Max, Tubi
Ari Aster’s *Hereditary* is frightening because Toni Collette makes the family’s distress so difficult to bear. We recommend it strongly, with reservations about the slow stretches and the urge to explain what already scares us.
- [*The Commuter*](https://film.one/film/the-commuter.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 71 · PG-13 · 1h 44m · Action/Thriller · on Hulu
Jaume Collet-Serra’s train-bound thriller is enjoyable nonsense, carried by Liam Neeson’s commitment and inventive use of cramped carriages. The conspiracy is harder to follow than it deserves to be, but the action usually earns our patience.
