# Science Fiction films

Science fiction is the genre that gets to ask what if, and then has to live with the answer. The good ones take the idea seriously enough to follow it into ordinary rooms: a robot tidying a dead planet, a family in Sheffield listening to the news. The poor ones treat the future as a backdrop for explosions and call it vision. Our shelf leans heavily towards the last two decades, when science fiction was most often paired with action, and the scores suggest the pairing rarely helped.

Start with [2001: A Space Odyssey](/film/2001-a-space-odyssey) (92), which earns its slowness with every exact, unnerving shot. Then [Alien](/film/alien) (92), a horror film that makes a ship frightening before anything turns up, and [Back to the Future](/film/back-to-the-future) (92), the rare comedy whose plotting is as clever as its jokes. After those, [Threads](/film/threads) if you can bear it, or [WALL·E](/film/walle) if you cannot.

For US. 432 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Resident Evil*](https://film.one/film/resident-evil.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 30m · Horror/Science Fiction
Zach Cregger starts again with one frightened man, one delivery and one long night. For an hour it is tight, funny and horrible; then it gets bigger and gets worse. Worth your evening if this is your genre.
- [*Hope*](https://film.one/film/hope.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 77 · R · 2h 37m · Science Fiction/Mystery
Na Hong-jin’s creature feature has enough wit and well-staged pursuit to make its excesses worth enduring. We recommend it for the action, with fair warning that the creatures are less convincing than the chases.
- [*Colony*](https://film.one/film/colony.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 62 · R · 2h 03m · Action/Horror
Yeon Sang-ho’s *Colony* has unnerving infected bodies and a useful new problem: zombies that think together. The action earns attention, but thin characters and repeated explanations make this one for the already interested.
- [*The Dog Stars*](https://film.one/film/the-dog-stars.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 58 · R · 1h 59m · Science Fiction/Thriller
Ridley Scott’s survival drama has warmth and some rewarding aerial photography, but its thin characters cannot sustain the leisurely pace. *The Dog Stars* is too uneven to recommend beyond those already drawn to quiet post-apocalyptic tales.
- [*The End of Oak Street*](https://film.one/film/the-end-of-oak-street.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 66 · PG-13 · 1h 40m · Science Fiction/Mystery
David Robert Mitchell’s dinosaurs-in-suburbia picture is brisk, handsome and often frightening, and Anne Hathaway carries it. The family drama it keeps setting up is never played out, and the ending steps back from the darker film it had been promising.
- [*The Last House*](https://film.one/film/the-last-house.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 54 · PG-13 · 1h 50m · Horror/Science Fiction · on Netflix
Louis Leterrier shuts a family in a house and, for the best part of an hour, trusts that to be enough. It is. Then the film shows us what is outside, and a patient domestic thriller becomes a routine monster picture with a hurried ending.
- [*Soulm8te*](https://film.one/film/soulm8te.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 53 · R · 1h 39m · Horror/Science Fiction
Lily Sullivan is quietly good twice over, as the dead wife and the machine that wears her face, and Kate Dolan shoots the house with care. The script around them has one scare, one idea and a list to get through.
- [*Spider-Man: Brand New Day*](https://film.one/film/spider-man-brand-new-day.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 72 · PG-13 · 2h 25m · Science Fiction/Action
Cretton’s Spider-Man is the loneliest and most grown-up of Holland’s run, and for an hour it is the best of them. Then the guest stars and the green screen arrive, and the film gets longer and less interesting at the same time.
- [*Sheep in the Box*](https://film.one/film/sheep-in-the-box.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 54 · PG · 2h 06m · Drama/Science Fiction
Kore-eda films a grieving couple leasing a robot copy of their son as if it were one of his family dramas. Haruka Ayase is the reason to stay. The film’s reluctance to ask anything hard of its premise is why it does not add up.
- [*Her Private Hell*](https://film.one/film/her-private-hell.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 41 · R · 1h 50m · Science Fiction/Horror
Nicolas Winding Refn’s return to features has a superb score, a fine set of rooms and Kristine Froseth being funny in them, and then it asks us to watch beautiful people say very little, very slowly, for a hundred and ten minutes. We could not.
- [*Supergirl*](https://film.one/film/supergirl.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 56 · PG-13 · 1h 48m · Action/Adventure
Milly Alcock is a sour, tired, believable Supergirl and the film around her cannot keep up. A simple revenge plot, a child, a dog and three editors, and the fights are still too dark to follow.
- [*Disclosure Day*](https://film.one/film/disclosure-day.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 68 · PG-13 · 2h 26m · Science Fiction/Thriller
Spielberg’s alien conspiracy chase is fluently made and Emily Blunt is a pleasure in it. But the mystery behind all the running is second-hand, the film is twenty minutes too long, and the awe it keeps promising arrives late and sentimental.
- [*Masters of the Universe*](https://film.one/film/masters-of-the-universe.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 58 · PG-13 · 2h 21m · Action/Fantasy · on Amazon Prime Video
Travis Knight’s reboot is bright, cheerfully cast and has a Skeletor worth the ticket in Jared Leto. But the script cannot decide whether it is in on the joke or is the joke, and at 141 minutes the winking wears thin.
- [*Backrooms*](https://film.one/film/backrooms.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 51m · Horror/Mystery
For an hour, the hum of the strip lights and the damp yellow carpet of Kane Parsons’ maze are as frightening as anything we have sat through in some time. Then the script starts explaining, and the fear drains out room by room.
- [*I Love Boosters*](https://film.one/film/i-love-boosters.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 53m · Comedy/Science Fiction
Boots Riley’s second film is loud, bright and often funny, and Keke Palmer holds it together for as long as anyone could. Then the science fiction arrives, and the argument about work and theft gets lost in the machinery.
- [*The Mandalorian and Grogu*](https://film.one/film/the-mandalorian-and-grogu.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 58 · PG-13 · 2h 12m · Action/Adventure · on Disney+
Jon Favreau’s big-screen outing for the armoured bounty hunter and his green ward is pleasant, tidy and forgettable, a pair of good television episodes with the joins painted over. The puppet and Martin Scorsese’s street vendor are the reasons to stay.
- [*Project Hail Mary*](https://film.one/film/project-hail-mary.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 80 · PG-13 · 2h 37m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video
Lord and Miller’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel is warm, clever and likeable, with Ryan Gosling at his most puzzled and a puppet co-star worth the ticket on its own. It is half an hour too long, and the flashbacks are to blame.
- [*War Machine*](https://film.one/film/war-machine.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 63 · R · 1h 50m · Action/Science Fiction · on Netflix
Patrick Hughes puts Alan Ritchson through Ranger training and then sets a giant machine on him. The fights are staged with real skill; the men in them are numbers rather than people, so the hits land and the losses do not.
- [*The Bride!*](https://film.one/film/the-bride.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 57 · R · 2h 07m · Science Fiction/Horror · on HBO Max
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein riff has a fearless lead performance from Jessie Buckley and no settled idea what to do with her. It is loud, handsome, thrilling in bursts, and rarely the same film for ten minutes together.
- [*Hoppers*](https://film.one/film/hoppers.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 76 · PG · 1h 44m · Adventure/Animation · on Disney+
Pixar’s beaver body-swap is the studio’s funniest film in some years: quick, odd and unafraid of a nasty joke. The plot carries more than it needs and the last act loses its nerve, but the first hour is a pleasure.
- [*Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die*](https://film.one/film/good-luck-have-fun-dont-die.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 64 · R · 2h 14m · Science Fiction/Action · on Hulu
Gore Verbinski’s return is fast, loud and frequently funny, with Sam Rockwell giving everything as a time traveller trying to save a world that will not look up from its screen. It has about ninety minutes of ideas and 134 minutes of film.
- [*28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*](https://film.one/film/28-years-later-the-bone-temple.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 74 · R · 1h 49m · Horror/Thriller · on Netflix
Ralph Fiennes, a tower of skulls and a Duran Duran record give Nia DaCosta’s sequel its best hour. Jack O’Connell’s cult of tracksuited Jimmys gives it its loudest and least interesting, and the film is only as good as whichever half is on screen.
- [*Avatar: Fire and Ash*](https://film.one/film/avatar-fire-and-ash.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 58 · PG-13 · 3h 18m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Disney+
Cameron’s third visit to Pandora is as beautifully built as the first two, and it goes somewhere new only in its scenery. Oona Chaplin’s Varang is a proper villain; the film around her repeats itself for well over three hours.
- [*Arco*](https://film.one/film/arco.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 74 · PG · 1h 29m · Adventure/Animation · on Hulu
*Arco* is a warm, colourful family adventure that makes hope feel reasonable. Ugo Bienvenu gives its children enough curiosity to carry us through, though the time-travel rules and comic adults need more work.
- [*The Running Man*](https://film.one/film/the-running-man.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 60 · R · 2h 13m · Action/Thriller · on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+
Edgar Wright’s version of Stephen King’s novel is quick, handsome and well cast, and for an hour it is a good time. Then it starts repeating itself, the satire never gets under the skin, and the ending loses its nerve.
- [*Predator: Badlands*](https://film.one/film/predator-badlands.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · PG-13 · 1h 47m · Action/Science Fiction · on Hulu
Dan Trachtenberg turns the series’ monster into its underdog and pairs him with Elle Fanning’s talkative synthetic, and the odd couple carry it. It is likeable, well built and gentler than a Predator film has any business being.
- [*Bugonia*](https://film.one/film/bugonia.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 59m · Science Fiction/Thriller · on Netflix
Lanthimos locks Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in a cellar for two hours, and the result is tense, cruel and often funny. It also knows exactly what it thinks about the people upstairs and the people down there, and it tells us more than once.
- [*TRON: Ares*](https://film.one/film/tron-ares.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 50 · PG-13 · 1h 59m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Disney+
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have written the best thing in Joachim Rønning’s third *Tron* film by some distance. Under it sits one good chase, a great deal of talk about what machines want, and Jared Leto not answering.
- [*The Long Walk*](https://film.one/film/the-long-walk.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 48m · Science Fiction/Thriller · on HBO Max
Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s death march is grim, honest about what it shows, and carried by Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson. It has a single idea and walks it for 108 minutes; the idea holds longer than we expected, though not all the way.
- [*The Fantastic 4: First Steps*](https://film.one/film/the-fantastic-4-first-steps.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 71 · PG-13 · 1h 55m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Disney+
Matt Shakman’s reboot is the warmest and best-dressed Fantastic Four yet, and its four leads behave like people who have shared a bathroom for years. The planet-eater coming for them is a good deal less interesting than their kitchen.
- [*Superman*](https://film.one/film/superman.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 66 · PG-13 · 2h 10m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max
James Gunn’s Superman is kind, bright and busy. David Corenswet makes a warm and credible hero and Nicholas Hoult a Luthor worth disliking, but the film keeps adding characters and crises until the last act is mostly noise.
- [*Jurassic World Rebirth*](https://film.one/film/jurassic-world-rebirth.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 63 · PG-13 · 2h 14m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Netflix
Gareth Edwards stages dinosaurs with more patience and scale than the series has managed in years, and two long sequences are close to wonderful. David Koepp’s script sends people we barely know on an errand that runs out before the film does.
- [*Elio*](https://film.one/film/elio.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 1h 38m · Animation/Adventure · on Disney+
The opening half hour, about a lonely boy who wants to be taken away, is close to Pixar’s best. What follows is bright, busy and kind, and it is also the story you expect, told at the pace of someone who has told it before.
- [*28 Years Later*](https://film.one/film/28-years-later.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 76 · R · 1h 55m · Horror/Thriller · on Netflix
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland go back to the Britain they emptied in *28 Days Later* and find it stranger and sadder than they left it. For an hour and three quarters this is a frightening, thoughtful horror film. Then come the last five minutes.
- [*Predator: Killer of Killers*](https://film.one/film/predator-killer-of-killers.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 25m · Animation/Action · on Hulu
Dan Trachtenberg takes the Predator through the Viking age, feudal Japan and the Pacific war in 85 animated minutes, and the fights are as inventive as any the series has staged. The people being fought over are thinner than the blades. Worth an evening if the franchise is yours.
- [*Lilo & Stitch*](https://film.one/film/lilo-and-stitch-2025.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 58 · PG · 1h 48m · Family/Science Fiction · on Disney+
Dean Fleischer Camp’s remake of the 2002 cartoon is warmer than most of Disney’s live-action retreads, and Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong make the sisters count. It is also tamer, longer and about half as funny as the film it copies.
- [*Thunderbolts**](https://film.one/film/thunderbolts.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 71 · PG-13 · 2h 07m · Action/Science Fiction
Marvel sends its spare parts into a hole and comes back with a film about not feeling well. Florence Pugh carries it; the first act dawdles and the fights are ordinary, but the ending earns its quiet.
- [*Mickey 17*](https://film.one/film/mickey-17.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · R · 2h 17m · Science Fiction/Comedy · on HBO Max
Bong Joon Ho’s clone comedy is funny, kind and overstuffed. Robert Pattinson, playing two versions of the same disposable man, is reason enough to see it; Mark Ruffalo’s shouting and a baggy middle hour are the reasons it is not more.
- [*Captain America: Brave New World*](https://film.one/film/captain-america-brave-new-world.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 46 · PG-13 · 1h 59m · Action/Thriller · on Disney+
Anthony Mackie is ready to carry the shield and Harrison Ford is ready to fall apart in the Oval Office. The film around them is a conspiracy thriller with the paranoia left out, shot in murk and visibly stitched together. Watchable, not much more.
- [*The Gorge*](https://film.one/film/the-gorge.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · PG-13 · 2h 08m · Romance/Science Fiction · on Apple TV
*The Gorge* works best when Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy are trying to get each other’s attention. The romance makes this odd thriller worth an evening, despite clumsy dialogue and an overexplained mystery.
- [*Companion*](https://film.one/film/companion.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 37m · Horror/Science Fiction · on HBO Max
Drew Hancock’s first film as director is quick, nasty and well acted, and Sophie Thatcher is reason enough to see it. It also says everything it has to say about men like Josh in the first half hour, then keeps saying it with knives.
- [*Star Trek: Section 31*](https://film.one/film/star-trek-section-31.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 35 · PG-13 · 1h 36m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Paramount+
Michelle Yeoh’s disgraced emperor gets her own spin-off, and it turns out to be a heist comedy with the jokes played too loud and the heist cut too fast. She is worth watching. Little around her is, and most critics agree.
- [*Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl*](https://film.one/film/wallace-and-gromit-vengeance-most-fowl.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 81 · PG · 1h 19m · Animation/Adventure · on Netflix
Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham make a warm, funny adventure whose silent characters do the finest work. The plot is familiar and the police detours can drag, but the animation and the central friendship earn our recommendation.
- [*Sonic the Hedgehog 3*](https://film.one/film/sonic-the-hedgehog-3.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 61 · PG · 1h 50m · Action/Science Fiction · on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+
Jeff Fowler’s third Sonic film is louder and a little better than the two before it, chiefly because Jim Carrey plays both Robotniks and is allowed to run. Around him is a fast, competent family film that tries for grief and settles for volume.
- [*Venom: The Last Dance*](https://film.one/film/venom-the-last-dance.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 48 · PG-13 · 1h 49m · Science Fiction/Action · on Disney+
Tom Hardy still makes two people out of one and their bickering is still the best thing in the series. Kelly Marcel, directing for the first time, keeps interrupting it for soldiers, scientists and an alien plot nobody on screen seems to believe in.
- [*Megalopolis*](https://film.one/film/megalopolis.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 54 · R · 2h 18m · Science Fiction/Drama
Francis Ford Coppola has paid for his own dream and put all of it on screen at once. Some of it is handsome, some of it is Aubrey Plaza, and none of it says more than the tagline does.
- [*The Wild Robot*](https://film.one/film/the-wild-robot.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 1h 42m · Family/Animation · on Amazon Prime Video
Chris Sanders’s film about a robot raising a gosling is the warmest film DreamWorks has made in years, painted like a picture book and honest about death. We recommend it, with a caveat: the last third swaps feeling for action.
- [*The Substance*](https://film.one/film/the-substance.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 21m · Horror/Science Fiction · on HBO Max, MUBI
Coralie Fargeat’s horror about a television star who splits herself into a younger model is loud, bright and superbly made, and Demi Moore is remarkable in it. It says one thing many times over 141 minutes. If you can stomach it, it is worth your evening.
- [*Transformers One*](https://film.one/film/transformers-one.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · PG · 1h 44m · Animation/Science Fiction · on Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+
Josh Cooley’s animated prequel gives Optimus Prime and Megatron a shared youth as miners and a friendship worth caring about, and it is funnier and clearer than anything the live-action films managed. The plot goes where you know it will, and the last act is mostly noise.
- [*Alien: Romulus*](https://film.one/film/alien-romulus.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 59m · Horror/Science Fiction · on Hulu
Fede Álvarez has made the most frightening *Alien* film in decades by rebuilding the first two, piece by piece. It is expertly done and we jumped often. We also spent much of it recognising things, which is not the same as being surprised.
- [*Borderlands*](https://film.one/film/borderlands.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 32 · PG-13 · 1h 41m · Action/Science Fiction · on Peacock
Eli Roth’s *Borderlands* wastes an energetic Cate Blanchett on muddled shootouts and jokes that scarcely register. There is colour in the costumes, but little pleasure in spending 101 minutes with this underwritten company.
- [*Deadpool & Wolverine*](https://film.one/film/deadpool-and-wolverine.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 60 · R · 2h 08m · Action/Comedy · on Disney+
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are good company and the film knows it, so it gives them a grey wasteland and two hours of jokes about the studio that owns them. Funny in patches, tiring in stretches, and Jackman deserved better.
- [*Despicable Me 4*](https://film.one/film/despicable-me-4.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · PG · 1h 34m · Animation/Comedy · on Amazon Prime Video
The fourth Gru film is 94 minutes of sketches with a plot stapled on: bright, noisy, sometimes funny, and never in the same story for more than ten minutes. The children will not mind. The adults will check their watches.
- [*A Quiet Place: Day One*](https://film.one/film/a-quiet-place-day-one.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 70 · PG-13 · 1h 40m · Horror/Science Fiction · on Netflix, Paramount+
Michael Sarnoski’s prequel is the smallest film in the series and the best, a sad and tender two-hander carried by Lupita Nyong’o. The monster sequences are the least of it, and by the second half they have started to repeat themselves.
- [*Robot Dreams*](https://film.one/film/robot-dreams.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 84 · NR · 1h 42m · Animation/Drama
Pablo Berger turns Sara Varon’s graphic novel into a wordless, hand-drawn film about a lonely dog, the robot he builds and the beach that comes between them. It sags in the middle; its last ten minutes hurt us more than we expected.
- [*Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga*](https://film.one/film/furiosa-a-mad-max-saga.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 72 · R · 2h 29m · Action/Science Fiction · on HBO Max
George Miller goes back fifteen years before *Fury Road* to explain a woman who needed no explaining, and does it with real invention and a good deal of digital sand. Taylor-Joy is fierce, Hemsworth talks too much, and the middle hour is as good as the series gets.
- [*Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes*](https://film.one/film/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 64 · PG-13 · 2h 25m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on Amazon Prime Video
Wes Ball’s continuation of the series is handsome, unhurried and decent-hearted, with an overgrown world worth the ticket and a young chimp worth following. It is also 145 minutes long and does not have enough story to fill them.
- [*The Beast*](https://film.one/film/the-beast.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 76 · NR · 2h 26m · Science Fiction/Drama
Bertrand Bonello turns a Henry James novella into a three-era romance about a woman who wants to stop being afraid, and Léa Seydoux carries all of it. It is bold, handsome and too long, and the Los Angeles stretch nearly sinks it. We recommend it anyway.
- [*Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire*](https://film.one/film/godzilla-x-kong-the-new-empire.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 57 · PG-13 · 1h 55m · Action/Adventure · on HBO Max
Adam Wingard’s second monster team-up is bright, loud and daft, and it is at its best when the humans stop talking, which is not often enough. Left alone with the apes, it is close to good fun; the rest is people reading out the plot.
- [*Dune: Part Two*](https://film.one/film/dune-part-two.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 84 · PG-13 · 2h 47m · Science Fiction/Adventure · on HBO Max
Denis Villeneuve’s second half of Herbert’s novel is the most assured large-scale science fiction we have seen in years, and Greig Fraser’s desert deserves the biggest screen you can find. The love story at its centre does not hold.
