# Sport films

Sport is the excuse, not the subject. The films we score highly on this shelf are about work, money and family, with a match or a bout somewhere near the end that the film could, in most cases, survive losing. What we judge is whether the people are still interesting when the whistle goes: whether the director has looked at the kitchen, the bus and the training room as closely as the pitch. Boxing turns up more than any other sport here, and the shelf leans towards the recent, though the best of it is often a documentary that took years to make.

Start with [Hoop Dreams](/film/hoop-dreams) (92), which earns every one of its 174 minutes by paying attention to school and family. Then [Raging Bull](/film/raging-bull) (91), where the violence is never allowed to become a pleasure. Then [Breaking Away](/film/breaking-away) (86), a comedy about class with a bicycle race attached. After those, try [Touching the Void](/film/touching-the-void), which is frightening even though the men telling the story are plainly alive.

For US. 82 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Fall 2: Deadpoint*](https://film.one/film/fall-2-deadpoint.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 63 · PG-13 · 1h 38m · Thriller/Sport
The climbing in *Fall 2: Deadpoint* can still make us flinch, but recycled conflict and thin dialogue keep getting in the way. There is enough here for height-thriller devotees, provided they forgive the interruptions.
- [*The Dink*](https://film.one/film/the-dink.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 59 · PG-13 · 1h 43m · Comedy/Sport · on Apple TV
Jake Johnson and Mary Steenburgen make agreeable company in a pickleball comedy that struggles to find enough good jokes. Their friendship provides some warmth, but the familiar sporting business gives us little reason to recommend it.
- [*Giant*](https://film.one/film/giant.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 55 · 1h 50m · Drama/History
Rowan Athale’s biopic of Prince Naseem Hamed is really a film about his trainer, and Pierce Brosnan’s Brendan Ingle is the best thing in it. Around him the fights are short, the script is familiar and the boxer himself never quite comes into focus.
- [*Beast*](https://film.one/film/beast.md) — 2026 · Fi1m 66 · R · 1h 55m · Action/Drama · on Starz
Tyler Atkins’s cage-fighting drama does nothing the genre has not done before, and it does most of it properly. Daniel MacPherson holds it together with a stillness the script rarely earns, and the fights can be followed. We knew every beat before it landed.
- [*Marty Supreme*](https://film.one/film/marty-supreme.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 82 · R · 2h 30m · Drama/Thriller · on HBO Max
Josh Safdie’s table tennis film is loud, fast and built around Timothée Chalamet, who is up to it. It runs half an hour too long and loves its hustler more than we could, but the matches alone are worth the ticket.
- [*Christy*](https://film.one/film/christy.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 58 · R · 2h 14m · History/Drama · on HBO Max
Sydney Sweeney throws herself at Christy Martin’s story and Ben Foster makes a small, quiet monster of the man in her corner. Around them David Michôd has built a biopic that hits its marks in order and rarely surprises; for the interested, with reservations.
- [*The Smashing Machine*](https://film.one/film/the-smashing-machine.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 70 · R · 2h 03m · Drama/History · on HBO Max
Benny Safdie’s portrait of the fighter Mark Kerr is quiet, careful and better acted than we had any right to expect, with Dwayne Johnson unrecognisable and good. It is also slower than it needs to be, and more ordinary than its manner lets on.
- [*HIM*](https://film.one/film/him.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 48 · R · 1h 36m · Horror/Mystery · on Netflix
Marlon Wayans supplies menace, and the football violence has an unpleasant force. But *HIM* smothers its promising subject in blunt symbolism and confused plotting, leaving too few scares to reward the effort.
- [*Happy Gilmore 2*](https://film.one/film/happy-gilmore-2.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 52 · PG-13 · 1h 58m · Comedy/Sport · on Netflix
Adam Sandler’s return to the hockey jersey has real feeling, and Christopher McDonald and Bad Bunny earn their laughs. It has a guest list longer than the script and a third act that will not stop. Fans will forgive it; nobody else need bother.
- [*F1*](https://film.one/film/f1.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 66 · PG-13 · 2h 36m · Action/Drama · on Apple TV
Joseph Kosinski puts a camera inside a real Formula One car and the racing is as thrilling as any we have seen on screen. Everything between the races is a sports film we have watched a dozen times, with better tailoring and a longer running time.
- [*Challengers*](https://film.one/film/challengers.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 80 · R · 2h 12m · Drama/Romance · on Amazon Prime Video
Luca Guadagnino’s tennis love triangle is quick, funny and sharply acted by Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. The score never stops shouting and the last stretch is more style than tennis, but we enjoyed ourselves.
- [*Yolo*](https://film.one/film/yolo.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 48 · PG-13 · 2h 09m · Drama/Comedy
Jia Ling gives *Yolo* a sympathetic centre, but the broad comedy, thin romance and slow approach to training make it hard to recommend. Her performance deserves a film that knows when to move on.
- [*The Iron Claw*](https://film.one/film/the-iron-claw.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 71 · R · 2h 13m · Drama/History · on The Roku Channel, Tubi
Sean Durkin’s film about the Von Erich wrestling family is sincere, well cast and quieter than its story, and it hurries through griefs it should sit with. It is worth an evening for the brothers, for Efron, and for one late scene that undid us.
- [*Next Goal Wins*](https://film.one/film/next-goal-wins.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 50 · PG-13 · 1h 44m · Comedy/Drama · on Hulu
Taika Waititi has the warmest possible material, a team that lost 31–0 and kept turning up, and hands most of it to Michael Fassbender’s coach. Funny in patches, kind throughout, and about the wrong man.
- [*Gran Turismo*](https://film.one/film/gran-turismo.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 56 · PG-13 · 2h 15m · Adventure/Drama · on HBO Max, Hulu
Neill Blomkamp’s races have real speed and weight, and David Harbour gives the film a pulse. Around them, Zach Baylin and Jason Hall’s script hits every beat of the underdog sports film in order, and too much of the rest is an advert for the car.
- [*The First Slam Dunk*](https://film.one/film/the-first-slam-dunk.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 81 · PG-13 · 2h 05m · Animation/Comedy · on Netflix
*The First Slam Dunk* makes animated basketball feel physically demanding and worth caring about. The flashbacks sometimes break the match’s grip, and the tactics can get dense, but the movement earns our attention back.
- [*Air*](https://film.one/film/air.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 70 · R · 1h 52m · Drama/History · on Amazon Prime Video
Ben Affleck’s account of how Nike signed Michael Jordan is quick, funny and well played, with Matt Damon and Viola Davis at their most watchable. It is also a corporation’s story told the corporation’s way, and the man it is about never shows his face.
- [*Creed III*](https://film.one/film/creed-iii.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 72 · PG-13 · 1h 56m · Drama/Action · on Hulu
Michael B. Jordan directs himself with confidence and without Stallone, and Jonathan Majors gives the film a wounded, watchful antagonist it barely knows what to do with. The fights are inventive; the story around them is the old one, told faster than it can bear.
- [*The Swimmers*](https://film.one/film/the-swimmers.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 66 · PG-13 · 2h 14m · Drama/History · on Netflix
Sally El Hosaini’s drama is carried by Nathalie Issa and Manal Issa, whose closeness makes the danger matter. The refugee journey grips, but conventional sporting uplift and insistent music weaken an affecting story.
- [*Hustle*](https://film.one/film/hustle.md) — 2022 · Fi1m 72 · R · 1h 57m · Drama/Comedy · on Netflix
Adam Sandler, playing it straight, carries a basketball drama that does nothing you have not seen before and does most of it well. The scouting and the court scenes are alive; the front office villains are cardboard.
- [*King Richard*](https://film.one/film/king-richard.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 68 · PG-13 · 2h 24m · Drama/History
Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film about the making of Venus and Serena Williams is warm, well acted and a good deal softer on its subject than he was on anyone else. Will Smith is fine; Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is better.
- [*Rising Phoenix*](https://film.one/film/rising-phoenix.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 74 · PG-13 · 1h 46m · Documentary/Sport · on Netflix
Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui make an affecting, handsome introduction to Paralympic sport. The athletes and competition footage earn our attention, though the insistent music and crowded storytelling sometimes make admiration feel over-organised.
- [*Ford v Ferrari*](https://film.one/film/ford-v-ferrari.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 80 · PG-13 · 2h 33m · Drama/History
Matt Damon and Christian Bale make James Mangold’s racing drama worth the long evening. The driving is gripping and the friendship persuasive, though the corporate interference becomes repetitive long before the script lets it go.
- [*Diego Maradona*](https://film.one/film/diego-maradona.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 76 · 2h 10m · Documentary/Sport · on HBO Max
Asif Kapadia’s documentary is worth seeing for its football and its unnervingly intimate archive. It is less persuasive about Diego Maradona’s choices, and its 130 minutes could use a firmer cut.
- [*High Flying Bird*](https://film.one/film/high-flying-bird.md) — 2019 · Fi1m 78 · R · 1h 30m · Drama/Sport · on Netflix
An agent tries to turn an NBA lockout against the owners, in ninety minutes of quick, dense talk written by Tarell Alvin McCraney and shot by Steven Soderbergh on a phone. Sharp, well acted and a little cold, and it ends a scene early.
- [*Creed II*](https://film.one/film/creed-ii.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 64 · PG-13 · 2h 10m · Drama/Action · on Hulu, Pluto TV
Steven Caple Jr.’s sequel is well acted, cleanly shot in the ring and entirely without surprise. Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone carry it; Dolph Lundgren, saying almost nothing, walks off with it. Worth an evening if you know what you are buying.
- [*Free Solo*](https://film.one/film/free-solo.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 82 · PG-13 · 1h 40m · Documentary/Adventure · on Disney+, Hulu
Chin and Vasarhelyi have filmed something that should not have been filmable, and the final stretch on the wall is as frightening as anything we have watched in years. The hour of preparation around it is honest but thinner than the film thinks.
- [*The Pass*](https://film.one/film/the-pass.md) — 2016 · Fi1m 72 · 1h 27m · Drama/Romance · on The Roku Channel, Tubi
Ben A. Williams’s film of John Donnelly’s play about a closeted footballer barely leaves its hotel rooms and does not need to. Russell Tovey is first-rate as a man who has traded himself for a career; the middle section works too hard to make its point.
- [*I, Tonya*](https://film.one/film/i-tonya.md) — 2017 · Fi1m 70 · R · 2h 00m · Drama/Comedy · on Tubi
Craig Gillespie’s Tonya Harding film is quick, rude and often funny, with Margot Robbie and Allison Janney on form and the skating shot like a chase. The jokes and the beatings never settle in the same room, and the film ends by blaming us.
- [*Icarus*](https://film.one/film/icarus.md) — 2017 · Fi1m 76 · 2h 01m · Documentary/Sport · on Netflix
Bryan Fogel set out to film himself cheating at amateur cycling and ended up with the man who ran Russia’s anti-doping laboratory telling him everything. The first hour is self-indulgent; the second is a proper thriller, and nearly all of it is Grigory Rodchenkov.
- [*Cars 3*](https://film.one/film/cars-3.md) — 2017 · Fi1m 58 · G · 1h 42m · Animation/Drama · on Disney+
Brian Fee’s sequel returns the series to racing after the spy caper of *Cars 2*, and it is kind, handsome and dull in about equal parts. Cristela Alonzo’s Cruz Ramirez is the reason to stay; the training montages are the reason you may drift off.
- [*Jawbone*](https://film.one/film/jawbone.md) — 2017 · Fi1m 70 · 1h 31m · Action/Drama · on Tubi
Johnny Harris wrote himself a boxer on the drink and plays him as if he has paid for every scene. The film around him is honest, well shot and short on surprises; the last fight is the best reason to stay.
- [*Dangal*](https://film.one/film/dangal.md) — 2016 · Fi1m 78 · NR · 2h 41m · Drama/Family · on Netflix
Nitesh Tiwari’s wrestling drama is involving and well acted, with contests we can follow and care about. Its length and familiar training routines hold it back, but sports-film devotees should find the effort worthwhile.
- [*O.J.: Made in America*](https://film.one/film/o-j-made-in-america.md) — 2016 · Fi1m 91 · NR · 7h 47m · Documentary/Crime
Ezra Edelman’s long account of O. J. Simpson needs every one of its 467 minutes. It is about Los Angeles as much as one man, and it is as good as documentary gets, if you give it a week rather than a night.
- [*Creed*](https://film.one/film/creed.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 85 · PG-13 · 2h 13m · Drama/Sport · on Hulu
Ryan Coogler makes a familiar boxing story feel worth telling again, helped by Michael B. Jordan and a generous Sylvester Stallone. The plotting is predictable and the pace occasionally slackens, but the affection is earned.
- [*Southpaw*](https://film.one/film/southpaw.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 54 · R · 2h 03m · Action/Drama · on Starz
Jake Gyllenhaal makes the boxing convincing and gives the family scenes some warmth. But Antoine Fuqua’s drama keeps piling on hardships when it needs to spend more time getting to know its characters.
- [*McFarland, USA*](https://film.one/film/mcfarland-usa.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 72 · PG · 2h 08m · Drama/Family · on Disney+
Niki Caro gives this familiar running-team drama enough warmth and attention to its community to make it worth the evening. Kevin Costner keeps it grounded, though the storytelling needs a brisker pace.
- [*Foxcatcher*](https://film.one/film/foxcatcher.md) — 2014 · Fi1m 82 · R · 2h 14m · Drama/Thriller · on The Roku Channel, Tubi
Bennett Miller’s wrestling drama makes money and dependence feel quietly frightening, with Channing Tatum the most affecting of its three leads. The solemn pace sometimes strains our patience, but the performances make it worth staying.
- [*The Armstrong Lie*](https://film.one/film/the-armstrong-lie.md) — 2013 · Fi1m 75 · R · 2h 04m · Documentary/Sport
Alex Gibney’s documentary makes gripping use of his access to Lance Armstrong, especially when self-assured denials meet accounts of intimidation. Repetition blunts the questioning, but the cycling footage and uncomfortable scrutiny of the filmmaker’s own involvement make it worth watching.
- [*Rush*](https://film.one/film/rush.md) — 2013 · Fi1m 82 · R · 2h 03m · Drama/Action
Ron Howard’s Formula One drama is tense, involving and easy to recommend, despite some over-explaining between races. Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl make the rivalry matter even when Peter Morgan’s script makes the men too simple.
- [*Moneyball*](https://film.one/film/moneyball.md) — 2011 · Fi1m 83 · PG-13 · 2h 14m · Drama/Sport
Bennett Miller makes baseball management absorbing, with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill giving the statistical debates wit and warmth. The resistance to their ideas is sometimes too neatly drawn, but the conversations are worth the evening.
- [*Senna*](https://film.one/film/senna.md) — 2010 · Fi1m 84 · PG-13 · 1h 46m · Documentary/Sport
Asif Kapadia makes archive footage feel urgent and frightening, even for those unmoved by racing. *Senna* is a gripping documentary, though its devotion to its subject makes it a less searching biography than it could be.
- [*The Fighter*](https://film.one/film/the-fighter.md) — 2010 · Fi1m 79 · R · 1h 56m · Drama/Sport
David O. Russell’s boxing drama makes a familiar underdog story worth another evening through its brothers and their difficult loyalties. The family comedy sometimes grows too broad, but the performances give the fighting a reason to matter.
- [*The Blind Side*](https://film.one/film/the-blind-side.md) — 2009 · Fi1m 52 · PG-13 · 2h 09m · Drama/Sport
Sandra Bullock is sharp, quick and funny as the Memphis mother who takes a homeless teenager into her house, and John Lee Hancock’s film is so grateful to her that it forgets to be curious about him. Pleasant, well made and thin.
- [*Rocky Balboa*](https://film.one/film/rocky-balboa.md) — 2006 · Fi1m 68 · PG · 1h 42m · Drama/Action · on Pluto TV
Stallone’s sixth outing as Rocky is smaller, sadder and better than anyone had a right to expect. The first hour, a widower telling old stories in a half-empty restaurant, is the best in the series since 1976. The fight is the part we could have done without.
- [*Million Dollar Baby*](https://film.one/film/million-dollar-baby.md) — 2004 · Fi1m 86 · PG-13 · 2h 12m · Drama/Sport · on Paramount+
Clint Eastwood’s boxing drama is deeply moving, with Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman matching his quiet, vulnerable performance. The story is familiar and occasionally labours its sadness, but the affection between these people makes it worth forgiving.
- [*Touching the Void*](https://film.one/film/touching-the-void.md) — 2003 · Fi1m 87 · R · 1h 46m · Documentary/Action · on AMC+
Kevin Macdonald makes an absorbing, often frightening film through the climbers’ accounts and convincing reconstructions. The opening takes its time, but the suspense survives the presence of the men telling the story.
- [*Bend It Like Beckham*](https://film.one/film/bend-it-like-beckham.md) — 2002 · Fi1m 76 · PG-13 · 1h 52m · Comedy/Drama · on Disney+
Gurinder Chadha’s football comedy is warm, funny and worth forgiving for its familiar plotting. Parminder Nagra gives Jess enough feeling to carry the broad family humour, though the script makes some difficult choices look rather easy.
- [*Seabiscuit*](https://film.one/film/seabiscuit.md) — 2003 · Fi1m 65 · PG-13 · 2h 21m · Drama/History · on Pluto TV
Gary Ross’s film about the undersized Depression racehorse is handsome and well acted, and the races are as good as any on film. Between them it keeps stopping to explain what the horse meant to America, and we had got it the first time.
- [*Ali*](https://film.one/film/ali.md) — 2001 · Fi1m 68 · R · 2h 37m · Drama/Sport · on Netflix
Michael Mann’s biopic opens with ten minutes as good as anything he has made, and Will Smith’s Ali is a real physical feat. But the film grows solemn and scattered in its middle hour, and the loudest man of his age keeps getting hushed.
- [*Jerry Maguire*](https://film.one/film/jerry-maguire.md) — 1996 · Fi1m 81 · R · 2h 19m · Comedy/Drama
Cameron Crowe’s romantic comedy is funny, generous and carried by three persuasive performances. It takes too long to make its points, but Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr. give us ample reason to stay.
- [*When We Were Kings*](https://film.one/film/when-we-were-kings.md) — 1996 · Fi1m 83 · PG · 1h 29m · Documentary/Sport · on HBO Max, The Roku Channel
Leon Gast’s footage of Muhammad Ali in Kinshasa in 1974 sat unfinished for more than twenty years, and it is the best record of the man there is: funny, frightened and never quiet. The interviews added later only get in its way.
- [*Hoop Dreams*](https://film.one/film/hoop-dreams.md) — 1994 · Fi1m 92 · PG-13 · 2h 54m · Documentary/Sport · on HBO Max
Steve James’s documentary about two young basketball hopefuls is worth all 174 minutes. Its patient attention to school and family makes it an exceptional film, even for those with no interest in the game.
- [*Cool Runnings*](https://film.one/film/cool-runnings.md) — 1993 · Fi1m 73 · PG · 1h 38m · Comedy/Adventure · on Disney+
Jon Turteltaub’s underdog comedy about the Jamaican bobsled team is corny, loosely true and built from spare parts, and it works anyway. John Candy, playing it quiet, is the reason, along with four leads who refuse to be the joke.
- [*A League of Their Own*](https://film.one/film/a-league-of-their-own.md) — 1992 · Fi1m 80 · PG · 2h 08m · Comedy/Drama · on Netflix
Allow Marshall’s women’s baseball comedy is funny, warm and worth an evening for Geena Davis and the team around her. The sisterly conflict feels pushed, and the sentiment occasionally needs reining in.
- [*Rocky V*](https://film.one/film/rocky-v.md) — 1990 · Fi1m 54 · PG-13 · 1h 44m · Drama/Action · on AMC+, Pluto TV
Sylvester Stallone and John G. Avildsen, who directed the first film, send Rocky home to South Philadelphia, broke and hurt, and for half an hour the series remembers what it was for. Then a protégé with a mullet arrives, and the film turns into a cartoon.
- [*Days of Thunder*](https://film.one/film/days-of-thunder.md) — 1990 · Fi1m 61 · PG-13 · 1h 47m · Adventure/Action · on Paramount+
Tony Scott makes the stock-car racing exciting, and Robert Duvall gives the film someone worth listening to. The thin writing and neglected romance make this one for racing enthusiasts rather than everyone else.
- [*Field of Dreams*](https://film.one/film/field-of-dreams.md) — 1989 · Fi1m 83 · PG · 1h 45m · Drama/Fantasy · on AMC+, Netflix
Phil Alden Robinson’s baseball fantasy is warm, funny and more moving than its fondness for speeches might suggest. Kevin Costner and Amy Madigan make its faith in second chances convincing, though the script occasionally insists on explaining why.
- [*Bull Durham*](https://film.one/film/bull-durham.md) — 1988 · Fi1m 83 · R · 1h 48m · Comedy/Romance · on Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Ron Shelton’s baseball romance is funny, sexy and warmly interested in people making fools of themselves. Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner give it an ease that survives the occasional over-written exchange and some uncertain pacing.
- [*Hoosiers*](https://film.one/film/hoosiers.md) — 1986 · Fi1m 79 · PG · 1h 54m · Drama/Family
*Hoosiers* is a satisfying sports drama whose sentiment occasionally gets the better of it. Gene Hackman makes the familiar coaching story worth following, with enough stubbornness to prevent all that encouragement becoming unbearable.
