# Western films

A western is a film about what people do when nobody is coming to help them. The scenery is incidental and the hats are costume. What we score is whether the film understands that its gunfights cost something, and whether it can hold a silence without flinching. Our shelf leans towards Sergio Leone and towards the more talkative revivals of the 2010s, which tells you we prize patience and a good face over a fast draw.

Start with [The Good, the Bad and the Ugly](/film/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly) (92), where Leone stretches a gold hunt over long stares and Ennio Morricone does the rest. Then [Unforgiven](/film/unforgiven) (92), Clint Eastwood's grave account of violent men and the legends told about them. [McCabe & Mrs. Miller](/film/mccabe-and-mrs-miller) (90) is the sad, funny one, and worth the effort of listening closely. After those, High Noon and Lone Star show what the form can do in a town rather than a landscape.

For US. 86 titles; 60 listed here. Add `?region=XX` for another country.

- [*Americana*](https://film.one/film/americana.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 47m · Crime/Western · on Hulu
*Americana* is a watchable crime western whose actors do more convincing work than its writing. The humour and sympathy survive, but awkward dialogue and uncertain handling of violence make it a qualified recommendation for genre enthusiasts.
- [*Eddington*](https://film.one/film/eddington.md) — 2025 · Fi1m 64 · R · 2h 28m · Western/Comedy · on HBO Max
Ari Aster’s small-town western sets a sheriff against a mayor in the summer of 2020 and is sharply funny about phones, masks and men who are certain they are right. Then it starts shooting.
- [*Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1*](https://film.one/film/horizon-an-american-saga-chapter-1.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 55 · R · 3h 02m · Western/Drama · on HBO Max
Kevin Costner’s return to the western is handsomely built and honestly meant, and its long night attack on the settlement is properly frightening. It then spreads four stories across three hours, finishes none, and plays like the opening episodes of a series.
- [*Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2*](https://film.one/film/horizon-an-american-saga-chapter-2.md) — 2024 · Fi1m 48 · 3h 10m · Western/Drama
Kevin Costner’s Western has handsome landscapes, detailed settings and little sense of where its many stories are going. His screen presence helps, but 190 minutes is a long time to spend waiting for the drama to gather force.
- [*Black God, White Devil*](https://film.one/film/black-god-white-devil.md) — 1964 · Fi1m 82 · 2h 00m · Adventure/Western
Glauber Rocha’s film about a Bahian cowherd who kills his boss and follows first a prophet and then a bandit is fierce, strange and often thrilling to look at. It is also loud for two hours, and louder in the second.
- [*The Old Way*](https://film.one/film/the-old-way.md) — 2023 · Fi1m 49 · R · 1h 35m · Action/Drama · on Hulu
A tidy, familiar revenge western that keeps Nicolas Cage on a low flame and finds its one good idea in a daughter as blank as her father. That fireside scene is worth having; the ninety minutes around it are a film you have seen before.
- [*The Power of the Dog*](https://film.one/film/the-power-of-the-dog.md) — 2021 · Fi1m 84 · R · 2h 07m · Drama/Western · on Netflix
Jane Campion’s first film since *Bright Star* is a slow, cruel western about a rancher who sets out to break his brother’s new wife, shot and cut with great care. Cumberbatch’s Phil is frightening, and once or twice you can see him deciding to be.
- [*News of the World*](https://film.one/film/news-of-the-world.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 65 · PG-13 · 1h 58m · Drama/Western · on Peacock
Paul Greengrass slows down for a Western and finds a remarkable young actor in Helena Zengel. The rest is handsome and honourable and moves at a walk, and only one shootout on a ridge reminds us who is directing.
- [*Let Him Go*](https://film.one/film/let-him-go.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 64 · R · 1h 54m · Thriller/Crime · on Peacock
Thomas Bezucha’s adaptation of Larry Watson’s novel is a tender, unhurried film about a long marriage for an hour, and a rather ordinary thriller afterwards. Lane and Costner make the first half worth the second, and Lesley Manville makes sure the second is never dull.
- [*First Cow*](https://film.one/film/first-cow.md) — 2020 · Fi1m 85 · PG-13 · 2h 02m · Drama/Western · on Tubi
Kelly Reichardt’s frontier story about a cook, a fugitive and a stolen pail of milk is among her best: funny, patient and quietly upsetting. It is slow by design, and once or twice it says its point out loud, but the friendship at its centre is real.
- [*The Nightingale*](https://film.one/film/the-nightingale.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 78 · R · 2h 16m · Drama/Thriller · on AMC+, MUBI
Jennifer Kent’s revenge western, set in the Tasmanian bush in 1825, is serious, well made and hard to sit through. The middle hour, with Aisling Franciosi and Baykali Ganambarr, is as good as the reviews say; the last third repeats itself.
- [*The Ballad of Buster Scruggs*](https://film.one/film/the-ballad-of-buster-scruggs.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 79 · R · 2h 12m · Western/Comedy · on Netflix
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen make the Old West funny, cruel and unexpectedly sad. The stories vary in strength, but Tim Blake Nelson’s singing cowboy and the patient attention to detail make the unevenness worth accepting.
- [*The Sisters Brothers*](https://film.one/film/the-sisters-brothers.md) — 2018 · Fi1m 78 · R · 2h 01m · Western/Drama · on AMC+, Tubi
Jacques Audiard’s western is a kind, odd, frequently funny thing about two killers who would rather be doing something else, and it is worth your evening. It dawdles in the middle, and the strand following Gyllenhaal and Ahmed is thinner than the one it keeps interrupting.
- [*Hostiles*](https://film.one/film/hostiles.md) — 2017 · Fi1m 58 · R · 2h 14m · Drama/Western · on Starz
Scott Cooper’s western is handsomely shot and honestly grim, and Rosamund Pike is remarkable in it. But it is a story about a soldier and a Cheyenne chief in which only one of them is written as a person, and the ride repeats itself long before it is over.
- [*The Magnificent Seven*](https://film.one/film/the-magnificent-seven-2016.md) — 2016 · Fi1m 54 · PG-13 · 2h 12m · Adventure/Action · on Peacock
Antoine Fuqua’s Western has a capable cast and a saloon confrontation worth sitting up for. Too much of the rest is thin characterisation and prolonged gunfire, with Denzel Washington doing more than the screenplay to hold our attention.
- [*Hell or High Water*](https://film.one/film/hell-or-high-water.md) — 2016 · Fi1m 84 · R · 1h 42m · Western/Crime · on HBO Max
David Mackenzie’s *Hell or High Water* is a tense, funny crime film with unusually good company. Its four central performances make the familiar pursuit matter, though Taylor Sheridan’s script occasionally explains the hardship that the faces and places have already made clear.
- [*The Revenant*](https://film.one/film/the-revenant.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 37m · Western/Drama · on HBO Max
Alejandro G. Iñárritu makes a gripping survival Western, with Leonardo DiCaprio carrying its physical weight. Its 157 minutes include too much solemn reflection, but the bear attack earns every flinch.
- [*The Hateful Eight*](https://film.one/film/the-hateful-eight.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 68 · R · 3h 08m · Drama/Mystery
Tarantino’s snowbound whodunnit is superbly built, finely scored and far too long, and its cruelty is the point rather than the price. Worth an evening for the cast and for Morricone; do not expect to like anyone in it.
- [*Bone Tomahawk*](https://film.one/film/bone-tomahawk.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 78 · NR · 2h 13m · Drama/Horror · on AMC+, The Roku Channel, Tubi
A patient, darkly funny western whose cast makes the horror count. The journey drags and its frontier politics are thin, but the company is worth keeping if graphic violence is not a barrier.
- [*Slow West*](https://film.one/film/slow-west.md) — 2015 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 24m · Western/Drama · on Netflix, Tubi
John Maclean’s first western is short, dry, oddly coloured and cruel exactly when it needs to be. The middle sags and the flashbacks are thin, but Fassbender and Smit-McPhee make a pair worth following, and the finale earns the wait.
- [*The Homesman*](https://film.one/film/the-homesman.md) — 2014 · Fi1m 72 · R · 2h 02m · Western/Drama · on Amazon Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Hilary Swank makes this uneven Western worth watching, giving frontier loneliness a painful immediacy. Tommy Lee Jones directs with feeling, but pushes the comedy too hard and gives three of his women too little to play.
- [*A Million Ways to Die in the West*](https://film.one/film/a-million-ways-to-die-in-the-west.md) — 2014 · Fi1m 40 · R · 1h 56m · Comedy/Western
Seth MacFarlane’s Western comedy has a willing supporting cast and too few jokes for 116 minutes. Charlize Theron brings the ease it needs, but repetitive vulgarity and a laboured lead performance make it a poor return on an evening.
- [*The Lone Ranger*](https://film.one/film/the-lone-ranger.md) — 2013 · Fi1m 55 · PG-13 · 2h 29m · Action/Adventure
Gore Verbinski opens and closes with runaway trains as well staged as anything in his *Pirates* films, and spends the two hours between them unsure whether his hero is a joke. Worth an evening for the finale; bring patience.
- [*Django Unchained*](https://film.one/film/django-unchained.md) — 2012 · Fi1m 78 · R · 2h 45m · Drama/Western · on AMC+, Tubi
Tarantino’s spaghetti western about slavery is funny, brutal and well acted, and it is forty minutes too long. Waltz, DiCaprio and Jackson talk each other into corners with relish; then the film reaches its natural end and keeps going.
- [*Meek's Cutoff*](https://film.one/film/meeks-cutoff.md) — 2011 · Fi1m 82 · PG · 1h 43m · Western/History · on Peacock, Tubi
Kelly Reichardt turns pioneer hardship into a quietly gripping western, with Michelle Williams giving its uncertainty a firm human centre. Some supporting characters remain thin, and the deliberate pace needs a patient evening.
- [*Rango*](https://film.one/film/rango.md) — 2011 · Fi1m 77 · PG · 1h 47m · Animation/Comedy
Gore Verbinski’s animated Western drops a pet chameleon into a desert town dying of thirst, and lights it like a Leone. It looks better than any family film has a right to, and it would rather quote old Westerns than get on with its own.
- [*True Grit*](https://film.one/film/true-grit.md) — 2010 · Fi1m 84 · PG-13 · 1h 50m · Drama/Adventure
The Coens make a funny, stern western in which Give Steinfeld holds her ground against Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. We recommend it warmly, though the men’s squabbling sometimes makes vengeance feel too comfortable.
- [*The Good, the Bad, the Weird*](https://film.one/film/the-good-the-bad-the-weird.md) — 2008 · Fi1m 74 · R · 2h 10m · Action/Adventure · on AMC+, The Roku Channel
Kim Ji-woon borrows Sergio Leone’s title, moves the western to occupied Manchuria and stages three of the best action sequences the genre has seen. The film between them is thin, and at 130 minutes it goes on twenty longer than the joke does.
- [*No Country for Old Men*](https://film.one/film/no-country-for-old-men.md) — 2007 · Fi1m 91 · R · 2h 02m · Crime/Thriller · on Paramount+
The Coens turn Cormac McCarthy’s novel into a patient, frightening thriller, with Javier Bardem making every pause feel dangerous. Its severity can be wearying, but we would recommend it even to those who usually avoid Westerns.
- [*The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford*](https://film.one/film/the-assassination-of-jesse-james-by-the-coward-robert-ford.md) — 2007 · Fi1m 84 · R · 2h 40m · Drama/Western
Andrew Dominik’s western is absorbing and often uncomfortable, with Casey Affleck and Brad Pitt making hero worship hard to watch. The pace needs patience, and some scenes repeat the point, but the performances repay the attention.
- [*Once Upon a Time in Mexico*](https://film.one/film/once-upon-a-time-in-mexico.md) — 2003 · Fi1m 56 · R · 1h 42m · Action/Crime · on Tubi
The third Mariachi film is loud, hot and busy, and it belongs to Johnny Depp’s rotten CIA man rather than to the hero. Rodriguez shoots, cuts and scores it himself, and the plot he wrote gets away from him well before the hour mark.
- [*Wild Wild West*](https://film.one/film/wild-wild-west.md) — 1999 · Fi1m 34 · PG-13 · 1h 46m · Action/Adventure · on Paramount+
Barry Sonnenfeld’s gadget-heavy western gives Will Smith and Kevin Kline little comic rhythm and too few good lines. Bo Welch’s inventive production design provides something to admire, but this is a poor use of capable people.
- [*Lone Star*](https://film.one/film/lone-star.md) — 1996 · Fi1m 86 · R · 2h 15m · Drama/Mystery
John Sayles makes a patient, absorbing mystery out of a Texas border town’s divided history. The ensemble gives its many connections emotional weight, although the writing occasionally makes those connections too neat to believe.
- [*Dead Man*](https://film.one/film/dead-man.md) — 1995 · Fi1m 81 · R · 2h 02m · Drama/Fantasy · on HBO Max, The Criterion Channel, Tubi
Jim Jarmusch’s funny, unsettling Western makes a fragile accountant worth following across a hostile frontier. Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer give it warmth, though the long pauses sometimes ask more patience than they repay.
- [*Maverick*](https://film.one/film/maverick.md) — 1994 · Fi1m 64 · PG · 2h 07m · Action/Adventure · on Tubi
Richard Donner’s big-screen version of the television Western is sunny, handsome and about twenty minutes too long. Mel Gibson grins, Jodie Foster steals, and James Garner, who played the part first, quietly shows them both how it is done.
- [*Posse*](https://film.one/film/posse.md) — 1993 · Fi1m 58 · R · 1h 51m · Action/Adventure · on Tubi
Mario Van Peebles puts Black cowboys back into the Western and tells us, often, that he is doing it. The result is lively, well cast and too restless to land a punch; the quiet final minute does more than the preceding 110.
- [*Unforgiven*](https://film.one/film/unforgiven.md) — 1992 · Fi1m 92 · R · 2h 10m · Western
Clint Eastwood makes a grave, absorbing Western about the damage done by violent men and the stories told about them. Its attraction to gunfighter legend occasionally troubles us, but we would send a stranger to it.
- [*Far and Away*](https://film.one/film/far-and-away.md) — 1992 · Fi1m 52 · PG-13 · 2h 20m · Adventure/Drama
Ron Howard shoots Ireland, Boston and Oklahoma wide and golden, and it all looks superb. Bob Dolman’s script gives Cruise and Kidman a romance made of squabbles and a Boston middle that goes nowhere slowly. Stay for the land run; the rest is handsome and inert.
- [*City Slickers*](https://film.one/film/city-slickers.md) — 1991 · Fi1m 76 · PG-13 · 1h 54m · Comedy/Western
Ron Underwood’s comedy western is worth an evening for Billy Crystal, Jack Palance and the convincing friendship at its centre. The script occasionally insists on a life lesson when the actors have already made the point.
- [*Dances with Wolves*](https://film.one/film/dances-with-wolves.md) — 1990 · Fi1m 80 · PG-13 · 3h 01m · Adventure/Drama · on AMC+
Kevin Costner’s patient Western earns its scale through character, landscape and a willingness to listen. Its view of Sioux life is too reassuring, but the warmth and spectacle make the long journey worthwhile.
- [*Pale Rider*](https://film.one/film/pale-rider.md) — 1985 · Fi1m 77 · R · 1h 55m · Western/Drama
Clint Eastwood’s mysterious stranger holds together a rewarding, old-fashioned Western. The supporting actors and landscapes deserve attention too, even when the religious symbolism grows heavy and the danger seems too easy to handle.
- [*Heaven's Gate*](https://film.one/film/heavens-gate.md) — 1980 · Fi1m 79 · R · 3h 37m · Drama/Western · on Amazon Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Michael Cimino’s Western is moving enough to justify a long evening, though its storytelling drifts. Vilmos Zsigmond’s photography and David Mansfield’s music make the communal scenes worth lingering over; the romance is less consistently involving.
- [*Urban Cowboy*](https://film.one/film/urban-cowboy.md) — 1980 · Fi1m 61 · PG · 2h 12m · Drama/Romance
James Bridges builds a real place out of a Texas honky-tonk and its mechanical bull, then fills it with a soap opera about a sulking husband. Debra Winger is the reason to stay; John Travolta, top billed, is the reason you might not.
- [*The Emigrants*](https://film.one/film/the-emigrants.md) — 1971 · Fi1m 85 · PG · 3h 11m · Drama/History
Jan Troell’s account of Swedish farmers leaving for America is slow, plain and exact, and by the time the ship reaches the far side of the Atlantic it had us. Von Sydow and Ullmann carry it without raising their voices.
- [*The Hired Hand*](https://film.one/film/the-hired-hand.md) — 1971 · Fi1m 80 · R · 1h 31m · Western
Peter Fonda’s intimate Western rewards patience, especially when Verna Bloom and Warren Oates take our attention. Its visual flourishes sometimes overstate the melancholy, but the performances make the sadness worth sitting with.
- [*McCabe & Mrs. Miller*](https://film.one/film/mccabe-and-mrs-miller.md) — 1971 · Fi1m 90 · R · 2h 00m · Drama/Western · on Tubi
Robert Altman’s frontier Western is patient, funny and deeply sad, with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie making business feel painfully personal. Some dialogue gets lost, but we would recommend it to anyone willing to listen closely.
- [*Little Big Man*](https://film.one/film/little-big-man.md) — 1970 · Fi1m 72 · PG · 2h 19m · Western/Comedy
Arthur Penn’s Western is funny, humane and sometimes too eager to explain its morals. Dustin Hoffman keeps the tall tale moving, and Chief Dan George gives it feeling that survives the more laboured passages.
- [*El Topo*](https://film.one/film/el-topo.md) — 1970 · Fi1m 67 · NR · 2h 05m · Adventure/Drama
Alejandro Jodorowsky’s desert western has images that unsettle us and symbolism that wears us down. We recommend it for its strange conviction, with the warning that its 125 minutes can feel longer.
- [*Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid*](https://film.one/film/butch-cassidy-and-the-sundance-kid.md) — 1969 · Fi1m 84 · PG · 1h 51m · Western/Crime
George Roy Hill’s outlaw comedy is as easy to like as its reputation says, and Newman and Redford make it look like no work at all. It is padded in places and knows exactly how charming it is, but the chase and the ending land regardless.
- [*Once Upon a Time in the West*](https://film.one/film/once-upon-a-time-in-the-west.md) — 1968 · Fi1m 91 · PG-13 · 2h 46m · Drama/Western
Sergio Leone’s Western is worth all 166 minutes, even when its plotting grows needlessly tangled. The faces, the pauses and Ennio Morricone’s music give its violence a dread that few films sustain.
- [*The Wild Bunch*](https://film.one/film/the-wild-bunch.md) — 1969 · Fi1m 84 · R · 2h 25m · Western
Sam Peckinpah’s Western is gripping, sad and troubling, with William Holden giving its outlaw loyalties real weight. The wandering first half and thinly written women matter, but the performances and force of the action make it worth the discomfort.
- [*The Good, the Bad and the Ugly*](https://film.one/film/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly.md) — 1966 · Fi1m 92 · R · 2h 41m · Western · on The Roku Channel, Tubi
Sergio Leone makes a gold hunt worth every long stare, with Eli Wallach supplying the grubby humour and Ennio Morricone the excitement. A wandering middle stretch tests our patience; the film more than earns it back.
- [*For a Few Dollars More*](https://film.one/film/for-a-few-dollars-more.md) — 1965 · Fi1m 85 · R · 2h 12m · Western · on Amazon Prime Video, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Sergio Leone’s Western is funny, menacing and worth its leisurely pace, chiefly for Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef. The loose story is a real limitation; the contest between its leads keeps us watching.
- [*Hombre*](https://film.one/film/hombre.md) — 1967 · Fi1m 77 · NR · 1h 51m · Western/Drama · on Amazon Prime Video
Martin Ritt’s *Hombre* is a good, stern Western, carried by Paul Newman, Fredric March and Richard Boone. The writing presses its moral points too hard, but the performances make the arguments worth hearing.
- [*Hud*](https://film.one/film/hud.md) — 1963 · Fi1m 86 · NR · 1h 52m · Drama/Western
Martin Ritt’s Texas drama gives Paul Newman his most likeable louse and James Wong Howe a horizon to fill with sky, and neither wastes it. Only Melvyn Douglas’s upright rancher, right too often and too loudly, keeps it from the top rank.
- [*How the West Was Won*](https://film.one/film/how-the-west-was-won.md) — 1962 · Fi1m 62 · G · 2h 44m · Western
This Cinerama western follows one family across five chapters and 164 minutes, and it is more parade than film. But the train robbery is a proper set piece, and John Ford’s Civil War chapter shows what the rest might have been.
- [*One-Eyed Jacks*](https://film.one/film/one-eyed-jacks.md) — 1961 · Fi1m 78 · NR · 2h 21m · Western/Drama · on Amazon Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Tubi
Marlon Brando’s only film as director is a revenge western that keeps putting off the revenge, and is better for the delay. Charles Lang’s Monterey coastline and two careful lead performances carry a film that runs long and knows it.
- [*Cimarron*](https://film.one/film/cimarron.md) — 1960 · Fi1m 57 · NR · 2h 27m · Western
Anthony Mann stages the Oklahoma land rush as well as anyone has ever staged anything on horseback, and then spends two hours on a marriage that goes round in circles. Worth an evening for the opening; the rest is patient, handsome and slow.
- [*The Alamo*](https://film.one/film/the-alamo.md) — 1960 · Fi1m 50 · NR · 3h 22m · War/Adventure · on Pluto TV, Tubi
John Wayne’s siege is handsome, sincere and 202 minutes long, and a good third of that is speeches. William H. Clothier’s wide frame and the final assault earn their keep; the rest is an expensive way of hearing what Crockett thinks about liberty.
- [*Rio Bravo*](https://film.one/film/rio-bravo.md) — 1959 · Fi1m 88 · 2h 21m · Western/Drama
Howard Hawks makes an excellent Western out of unhurried company, dry comedy and carefully rationed danger. John Wayne anchors a generous ensemble, though 141 minutes leave a few conversations with more room than they need.
