## Fi1m on Abbie Cornish

> Abbie Cornish is most rewarding when vulnerability is central to the part. Her early dramatic leads and work with Jane Campion make a stronger case for her than the underwritten Kaya in *Seven Psychopaths*.

In *Seven Psychopaths* (2012), Abbie Cornish’s Kaya has little to do while the film finds plenty of time to discuss the habits of crime films. Martin McDonagh has written a part too thin to give much sense of the actor playing it. We were frustrated by the scant attention paid to Kaya and Olga Kurylenko’s Angela, because the screenplay recognises this familiar treatment of women and then repeats it. Cornish needs more to play.

*Somersault* (2004) gave her a breakthrough lead as Heidi, a vulnerable teenager, and remains an important starting point for her work. *Candy* (2006) followed with the title role opposite Heath Ledger in a drama about addiction. In Jane Campion’s *Bright Star* (2009), she played Fanny Brawne with the emotional intensity that makes her a persuasive choice for intimate drama. With Campion, the period setting leaves room for strong feeling, and Cornish makes good use of it.

The career then widened into Hollywood genre work, including *Sucker Punch* (2011) and *Limitless* (2011). Her second McDonagh film, *Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri* (2017), casts her as Anne in a persuasive ensemble. It is the stronger of the two films, but Frances McDormand is the chief reason we recommend it. McDonagh’s sharp dialogue helps, though his script sometimes hurries us towards sympathy the characters have not earned.

Both McDonagh films are worth an evening, with reservations, but neither is where we would send someone curious about Cornish herself. *Seven Psychopaths* gets much of its pleasure from Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell while leaving its women short of material. We would welcome another lead that asks as much of her as Campion did. Start with *Bright Star* before judging what she can do from a crowded crime comedy.
