## Fi1m on Adam Patterson

> Adam Patterson’s work with Declan Lawn is worth following for its attention to people under pressure. *Blue Lights* gives us good reason to trust their judgement of character, even when the dialogue explains more than it needs to.

The inexperienced officers in *Blue Lights* (2023) are most convincing when they are unsure of themselves. Their doubts give familiar police-drama situations weight without needing another explanation of the job. We worried about them because the performances made that uncertainty believable. The programme Patterson co-created with Declan Lawn earns our attention by making its recruits worth caring about before they know quite how to do the job.

Patterson came to drama through photography, documentary filmmaking and investigative current affairs, meeting Lawn while both worked on *Panorama*. Their writing draws on extended research into real events and places, a useful grounding for stories in which knowing the surroundings matters. Together they wrote and directed the short *Rough* (2020) and wrote *The Salisbury Poisonings* (2020), their first television commission. *Rogue Agent* (2022) was their feature directing debut, followed by their Belfast police drama *Blue Lights*. They also directed episodes of its second series.

These are shared achievements, and Lawn belongs in any account of them. Within the partnership, Lawn leads on the first dialogue draft and Patterson on directing; Fran Harris also shares the writing of *Blue Lights*. The programme’s interest in Belfast’s everyday life helps make the place more than a backdrop for the next incident. Its humane approach allows us to take the officers seriously without requiring them to be certain or infallible.

The reservation is that the recruits sometimes have to educate us as well as learn their jobs. Lawn, Patterson and Harris use their questions to explain the social and professional background, and those passages can sound too much like instruction. It is a manageable flaw in a tense, involving drama, but it shows how research can become something a writer feels obliged to pass on. The actors are more persuasive when their doubts need no further explanation, and the writing should trust them more often. Start with *Blue Lights*, and allow it the occasional explanation you did not need.
