## Fi1m on Adam Price

> Adam Price builds television the way his politicians build governments: a problem, a room of clever people, a compromise nobody wanted at the start. In *Borgen* it made a fine political drama, and a tidy one. The tidiness is his signature and his limit.

Somewhere in most hours of *Borgen* there is a moment when Birgitte Nyborg agrees to something she refused forty minutes earlier. Bent Sejrø, her mentor, has sat at the end of the table and told her what she would rather not hear. Svend Åge Saltum, the populist who plays the plain farmer, has turned out to be cleverer than the people laughing at him. And Nyborg, played by Sidse Babett Knudsen, has found the way through, which is nearly always a compromise. Adam Price writes these scenes so that she sounds right when she gives ground and right when she does not. That is the trick the whole series rests on.

He came to it slowly. Price began writing professionally in the mid-1980s while studying law at the University of Copenhagen, spent two years as a staff writer on *Taxa* (1997–98), supplied the idea for *Nikolaj og Julie* (2002–03) and was Head of Drama at TV 2 from 2001 to 2005. Then, with Camilla Hammerich, he created *Borgen* (2010): thirty episodes over three seasons to 2013, treating Christiansborg, the palace where the Danish parliament sits, as an office block that happens to contain a throne room. He returned to Nyborg in 2022 with *Borgen – Power & Glory*.

The strength is the writing. Price headed a staff that included Jeppe Gjervig Gram and Tobias Lindholm, and the scripts sound like the work of people who argued the case from both sides before a word was typed. Knudsen gives him the centre he needs, and he gives her a problem every week. The weakness is the same thing seen from the other side. Every hour is solved, and after twenty of them the solving begins to feel like a lesson, which is the caveat we attached to a warm recommendation. Still, we were moved more than a drama this orderly should manage by Knudsen at the end of an hour Nyborg has won: the bill is through, and her face tells us what it cost.

Since *Borgen* he has moved the method onto other ground. *Ride Upon the Storm* (2017–18) puts a family and its religion under the pressure he once applied to a cabinet. *Ragnarok* (2020–23) hands mythology to a younger audience. *The Orchestra* (2022) followed. He co-founded SAM Productions with Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen, where he still writes and produces. We have not reviewed these and will not judge them here. What we can say is that with Price the structure comes first and probably always will. Start with the first season of *Borgen*, and if the weekly lesson begins to grate somewhere in the second, that is the shape of the thing, not a lapse in your attention.
