## Fi1m on Adam Scott

> Adam Scott plays worried, apparently capable people whose composure takes work. His dry timing serves the comedies, but *Severance* makes the strongest case for him: we care about a man who cannot understand his own predicament.

In the lift in *Severance* (2022), Adam Scott makes a small physical change carry the switch between Mark Scout’s working and non-working selves. We can tell which man we are watching without feeling we have been invited to admire an acting exercise. He keeps both versions ordinary enough that the distinction matters. This is Scott at his most effective: precise about what a character can understand, and careful never to make him look foolish for knowing less than we do.

Comedy had already found several uses for him. *Step Brothers* (2008) gave him the smug antagonist Derek Huff, while *Party Down* (2009) cast him as Henry Pollard, a failed actor working in catering. As Ben Wyatt in *Parks and Recreation* (2010–2015), his dry timing worked within an ensemble without demanding that everyone else stand aside. But the repeated offers of anxious, baffled men that followed narrowed his opportunities.

*Big Little Lies* (2017), in which he plays the steady husband Ed Mackenzie, marked a move towards drama. Working with director Ben Stiller on *Severance*, he makes the move into a dramatic lead feel unforced. Mark’s divided memory could easily leave the performance doing little more than explaining the premise, but Scott makes the restrictions on his knowledge painful. We felt trapped watching his office-bound self, because he gives the loss of a life outside work such an ordinary, recognisable face. Even when the larger mystery threatens to take over, he keeps us concerned about the person caught in it.

The first season still takes too long to gather pace; even this performance cannot hurry it along. We would not confuse the patience Scott earns with an excuse for every delay in the storytelling. We would like to see him offered more parts that ask for this degree of concentration, rather than another variation on being agreeably worried. Start with *Severance*, and allow it some time to get going.
