## Fi1m on Adèle Exarchopoulos

> Adèle Exarchopoulos can make a close-up absorbing before her character knows what she wants to say. We value the awkwardness she brings to romantic drama, and the dry comic timing that makes her worth seeking out elsewhere.

In *Blue Is the Warmest Colour* (2013), a close-up of Adèle Exarchopoulos can make an ordinary conversation feel dangerous. She plays the student Adèle as someone still trying to understand her feelings, and does not supply an explanation simply because the scene might be easier with one. We felt protective of her because the uncertainty in her expression made an ordinary exchange seem capable of hurting her. Abdellatif Kechiche gives that unfinished quality time, and her scenes with Léa Seydoux's Emma repay the attention. The extended sex scenes test our patience, but the performance earns the three hours.

That was her breakthrough, followed by offers that tended towards sexually frank or ingénue roles, a narrow response to a performance so alive in its everyday scenes. She has since worked across French drama and comedy, with occasional international projects. Playing Agnès in Quentin Dupieux's absurdist comedy *Mandibles* (2021) gave her a welcome departure from intimate romantic drama.

In Ira Sachs's *Passages* (2023), she makes Agathe warm, direct and clear-eyed, without reducing her to the person hurt by somebody else. Franz Rogowski's Tomas and Ben Whishaw's Martin receive more of the screenplay's attention, and that imbalance matters. We know far more about what the men want than what Agathe wants for herself. Exarchopoulos gives her enough presence for the omission to be frustrating rather than easy to overlook. Sachs gets fine work from her, but a little more curiosity about Agathe would have made a better film.

Her Ennui in *Inside Out 2* (2024) offers a small, persuasive reason to follow her into comedy. The character lies flat on a sofa and operates the console from her phone; Exarchopoulos supplies the French drawl. We laughed at her drawled lines, each delivered as though speaking were an imposition. Kelsey Mann's sequel repeats too much of the first film, but her small contribution is worth enjoying. Start with *Blue Is the Warmest Colour* if there are three hours to spare; leave some room for the comedies, too.
