## Biography

Adolph Zukor was a Hungarian-American film producer and a founder of Paramount Pictures. Born on 7 January 1873 in Ricse, then in Austria-Hungary, he emigrated to the United States in 1889. He worked in the fur trade before entering the nascent film industry around 1903, operating penny arcades and theatres in partnership with Marcus Loew.

In 1912 Zukor established the Famous Players Film Company to distribute and produce feature-length films. He later combined his interests with those of Jesse L. Lasky to form Famous Players-Lasky, which became Paramount Pictures; he served as president until 1936 and remained chairman emeritus until his death. Zukor produced or executive-produced many films for the studio, including *Shanghai Express* (1932) and *A Farewell to Arms* (1932). He died on 10 June 1976 in Los Angeles.
