Adolphe Adam was a French composer born in Paris on 24 July 1803 and died there on 3 May 1856. He studied piano and composition at the Paris Conservatory and went on to write numerous comic operas and ballets.

He is best known for the ballets *Giselle* (1841) and *Le Corsaire* (1856), as well as the Christmas carol 'Cantique de Noël' ('O Holy Night'). His music from *Giselle* featured in the 1977 film *The Turning Point*.
