Born Wilhelm Arpad Hofkirchner on 18 May 1922 in Wöllersdorf, Austria, he appeared in over 100 films between 1947 and 1981. He trained as an aircraft technician and pilot, served as a paratrooper in the Second World War, and was wounded in North Africa before studying drama in Berlin and beginning his career as a film extra. Hoven worked extensively in post-war German cinema, appearing in romances, war films and crime dramas. He also produced and directed several films, including through the Aquila Film Enterprises company he co-founded in 1965. He collaborated with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder on multiple projects, including *World on a Wire* (1973), *Martha* (1974), *Fox and His Friends* (1975), *Despair* (1978), *Berlin Alexanderplatz* (1980) and *Lili Marleen* (1981).
