## Biography

Aída Bortnik was an Argentine screenwriter and playwright. She began her career as a television screenwriter in 1971 and co-wrote the screenplay for *The Truce* (1974) with Sergio Renán, the first Argentine film nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 1985 she co-wrote *The Official Story* with director Luis Puenzo. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and earned Bortnik a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. She also contributed to the screenplays for *Old Gringo* (1989), *Wild Tango* (1993), *Wild Horses* (1995) and *Ashes of Paradise* (1997).

Bortnik wrote for theatre and journalism as well. She was the first Latin American to become a permanent member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
