He was born on 11 August 1942 in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture, and died on 16 May 2024. Nakao attended Musashino Art University and studied in Paris before joining the Mingei theatre company in 1964. He appeared in numerous jidaigeki television dramas, notably playing Tokugawa Muneharu for twenty years in Abarenbō Shōgun. His film roles included parts in the Gokudō no Onna-tachi series and six Godzilla films. In the Heisei and Millennium Godzilla series he portrayed Commander Takaki Aso in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993), Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994) and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), and Prime Minister Hayato Igarashi in Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (2002) and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003).
