## Biography

Alain Renoir was a French cinematographer and later academic. The son of director Jean Renoir, he worked in the camera department on several of his father’s films in the late 1930s.

He served as camera operator on *The Rules of the Game* (1939) and assistant camera on *La Bête Humaine* (1938). He is also credited as cinematographer on *They Met on Skis* (1939) and appeared as an actor in the short *A Day in the Country* (1936).

After the Second World War he moved to the United States, studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and became a professor of comparative literature, co-founding the department there. He died in 2008.
