He was a leading figure in the Nouveau Roman literary movement of the 1950s and 1960s, alongside Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Butor and Claude Simon. He wrote the screenplay for Alain Resnais’s *Last Year at Marienbad* (1961), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Robbe-Grillet went on to direct and write his own feature films, beginning with *L’Immortelle* (1963), which received the Louis Delluc Prize. His subsequent films include *Trans-Europ-Express* (1966), *The Man Who Lies* (1968), *Eden and After* (1970), *Successive Slidings of Pleasure* (1974) and *The Beautiful Prisoner* (1983).
