## Fi1m on Alan Ford

> Alan Ford's gravelly delivery makes threats sound routine, which is why his gangsters can be funny and frightening at once. We value the comic judgement behind the voice, especially in *Snatch*, more than the familiar hard-man image.

In *Snatch* (2000), Alan Ford's Brick Top treats gangland threats as ordinary conversation. He sounds as though the unpleasantness ought to be obvious to everybody present. We rate the performance because Ford lets the comedy continue while making the danger clear. There is no pause to ask us to admire how frightening he can be.

Ford had worked in theatre, television and film for decades before Guy Ritchie's crime comedies. He played Jack in John Mackenzie's *The Long Good Friday* (1980), a supporting role in a film we rate more highly than *Snatch*. He later appeared in and narrated *Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels* (1998), before Ritchie cast him as Brick Top. The gravelly south London accent makes him an obvious fit for these films, but *Snatch* gives us more than the satisfaction of hearing the right voice in the right surroundings.

Within Ritchie's crowded cast, Ford benefits from the contrast with Jason Statham's Turkish. Statham keeps his delivery level, allowing the surrounding performances to grow louder, while Stephen Graham's Tommy supplies useful comic company. We laughed at Brick Top's banter, then felt uncomfortable because Ford made the threats so easy to enjoy. He can get a laugh without making the character harmless, and that is a more exacting job than simply sounding unpleasant.

That does not make *Snatch* an unqualified recommendation. Its ethnic caricatures and recycled gangland swagger are faults Ford's performance cannot fix. There is a risk in his recurring gangster and hard-man casting, too: familiarity can make choosing him seem sufficient in itself. His work in television comedy is a reason not to assume that menace is all he has to offer.

For Ford, we would start with *Snatch*, accepting the film's limitations rather than pretending he cures them. Listen to how little he does to separate a joke from a warning. We would welcome more parts that let him be funny without requiring him to threaten anyone.
