## Biography

Alan Rawsthorne was an English composer of orchestral, chamber and film music. Born in Haslingden, Lancashire, he studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and in Berlin before settling in London in the mid-1930s.

He wrote scores for a number of British films, including *Pandora and the Flying Dutchman* (1951), *The Cruel Sea* (1953) and *The Man Who Never Was* (1956). His concert works encompass three symphonies, several concertos and chamber pieces; he received the CBE in 1961.
