Alan Sillitoe was an English writer. He was born on 4 March 1928 in Nottingham and died on 25 April 2010 in London.

Sillitoe left school at 14 and worked in a factory before national service in the RAF. After contracting tuberculosis he lived in France and Spain. His debut novel *Saturday Night and Sunday Morning* was published in 1958 and he wrote the screenplay for the 1960 film adaptation directed by Karel Reisz. He also adapted his 1959 short story collection *The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner* for the 1962 film.

Sillitoe published novels, short stories, poetry and screenplays. He was married to the poet Ruth Fainlight.
