## Biography

Alan Webb (born Alan Norton Fletcher Webb, 2 July 1906 – 22 June 1982) was an English stage and film actor. He was born in York and educated at Bramcote School in Scarborough and the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne and Dartmouth. He served in the Royal Navy before beginning his professional stage career in 1924 with the Lena Ashwell Players.

Webb appeared in numerous stage productions in Britain and on Broadway, including Noël Coward plays and a 1968 Tony Award-nominated performance in *I Never Sang for My Father*. His film roles include Justice Shallow in *Chimes at Midnight* (1965), Gremio in *The Taming of the Shrew* (1967), Thomas Crich in *Women in Love* (1969), Yurovsky in *Nicholas and Alexandra* (1971), the Old Man in *The Canterbury Tales* (1972), Chevalier du Rivarol in *The Duellists* (1977) and Edgar Trent in *The First Great Train Robbery* (1978). He was offered the role of the first Doctor in the television series *Doctor Who* but declined it.
