## Fi1m on Albert Hughes

> Albert Hughes gives violence a physical ugliness that makes it difficult to admire. We value his eye for people and their surroundings, though the work with his brother Allen can press its point harder than the characters need.

The young men in *Menace II Society* (1993) know their surroundings so well that they scarcely notice them. Allen and Albert Hughes keep us looking at those familiar places and at aggression that already seems practised. We were upset by how ordinary the violence felt, because it happened among people and places the film had made recognisable. The brothers make a forceful crime drama by refusing to make these men harmless, though their insistence sometimes gives the characters too little room.

*Dead Presidents* (1995) continued the attention to urban struggle through a Vietnam veteran’s return and a heist. The move to period horror in *From Hell* (2001) widened the brothers’ subjects without softening the violence. Their last joint feature was the post-apocalyptic action drama *The Book of Eli* (2010); Albert’s first solo feature, *Alpha* (2018), turned to prehistoric survival. These changes of setting make it too simple to describe him only as an urban crime director.

In their joint work, Albert specialised in the technical and visual side, while Allen handled actors and story. *Menace II Society* shows why Albert’s contribution matters: Lisa Rinzler’s cinematography keeps our attention on people and their immediate surroundings, while Penny Barrett’s production design makes those surroundings feel inhabited. There is little invitation to stop and admire the scenery separately. The setting helps us understand how familiar violence has become to these men, without making their behaviour any easier to excuse.

The reservation is already there in *Menace II Society*. Tyger Williams’s screenplay places Caine’s life within a longer pattern of aggression, and the brothers are sometimes too determined to show that pattern repeating. Tyrin Turner suggests feelings that the pace gives him too little chance to develop; another demonstration of violence can tell us less than staying with him might have done. We would like Albert’s technical confidence to leave more room for those feelings, rather than hurry past them. Start with *Menace II Society*, and give Turner as much attention as the violence.

## Biography

Albert Hughes is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. He works with his twin brother Allen Hughes, credited jointly as the Hughes Brothers. Born on 1 April 1972 in Detroit, Michigan, he was raised in California after his parents divorced.

The brothers began making short films as teenagers and directed music videos before their feature debut, *Menace II Society* (1993), which they directed and for which they wrote the story. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was a commercial success. Subsequent co-directed features include *Dead Presidents* (1995), *From Hell* (2001) and *The Book of Eli* (2010). Albert typically handles the technical and visual aspects of their work.
