Born in Turin, he began his career on stage in 1914 and later worked in radio and as a director of theatre companies before entering film in the mid-1930s. He appeared in more than 110 films between 1934 and 1964, often in supporting roles. Silvani is known for his performances in Federico Fellini’s *La Strada* (1954) as Mr Giraffa and *Nights of Cabiria* (1957) as the wizard, as well as appearances in *Beat the Devil* (1953), *Ben-Hur* (1959) and *Sodom and Gomorrah* (1962).
