## Biography

Alex Gibney is an American documentary film director and producer. Born Philip Alexander Gibney on 23 October 1953 in New York City, he studied at Yale University and UCLA Film School. His father was the journalist Frank Gibney.

Gibney has directed numerous documentaries, including *Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room* (2005), *Taxi to the Dark Side* (2007), which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, *Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief* (2015) and *The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley* (2019). He created, directed and contributed the story to the series *The Looming Tower* (2018).

More recent credits include directing *Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie* (2026) and directing, writing and producing *Musk* (2026).
