## Fi1m on Alex Lawther

> Lawther's stillness is always plainly a pose, and he lets us see the frightened boy holding it. It has carried him from *The End of the F***ing World* to *Alien: Earth*; the question now is whether anyone will let him grow up.

Watch James in *The End of the F***ing World* tell us he is a psychopath. He says it flatly, in voice-over, and Lawther's face says something else: that this is a scared seventeen-year-old who has read about psychopaths. That is the thing Lawther does. He plays boys who have chosen a pose, and he shows us the pose and the boy underneath at the same time, without winking at either.

He started early. He was sixteen when he played John Blakemore in David Hare's *South Downs* (2011), first at Chichester and then in the West End. The young Alan Turing in *The Imitation Game* (2014) got him noticed, and Kenny in the "Shut Up and Dance" episode of *Black Mirror* (2016) got him noticed for the right thing: a boy in trouble, cornered, trying to hold a face together. Then came James, from 2017 to 2019, and the parts since have mostly been variations. Outsiders, the awkward, the frightened; *The French Dispatch*, *The Last Duel*, the voice of Karis Nemik in *Andor* (2022). He has been cast to type for a decade, and the type is a good one.

James is the performance that shows what the type can carry. Jessica Barden's Alyssa is all attack, and Lawther gives her nothing to push against, which turns out to be the most disarming thing anyone could do to her. Covell's writing gives them both a voice-over, so we hear the thought and watch the lie, and the jokes and the hurt come from the gap. James moved us more than we expected, and it was the smallness of it: the stillness keeps slipping, and Lawther keeps putting it back, and we could see how much effort that took. He has said the part was about James working out "he's not a psychopath, he's just very, very, very sad", and that is exactly what is on the screen.

*Alien: Earth* (2025) is the biggest thing he has done and the one that shows the limits. Joe DiMaggio Hermit is the human tied to Sydney Chandler's Wendy, and Lawther is, as ever, good at looking frightened while trying not to be. But Chandler carries the series, and the part gives Lawther less to hide behind: no pose, just a man who is scared and has nowhere to put it. Some have found him awkward in it. We would say the awkwardness is the performance, and that the series does not always know what to do with it.

Since 2022 he has been writing and directing short films, which may be where the next phase is. He was born in 1995 and cannot play seventeen much longer. The interesting question is what he does with the stillness once nobody believes it is a pose.
