## Biography

Alexander Dovzhenko was a Soviet film director, screenwriter and editor of Ukrainian origin. He was born on 10 September 1894 in Viunyshche, Chernigov Governorate, Russian Empire (now part of Ukraine), and died on 25 November 1956.

Dovzhenko directed, wrote and edited the silent film *Earth* (1930), the third part of his 'Ukraine Trilogy' that also includes *Zvenigora* (1928) and *Arsenal* (1929). He personally directed only a small number of films over his career. He received the Stalin Prize in 1941 for *Shchors* and again in 1949 for *Michurin*.
