## Fi1m on Alexei Sayle

> Alexei Sayle’s Balowski appearances can unsettle even *The Young Ones*. We value the sharp writing as much as the force of his delivery, though the programme sometimes needs a pause rather than another louder joke.

When Alexei Sayle turns up as another member of the Balowski family in *The Young Ones* (1982), there is little prospect of the programme calming down. His absurd monologues are well suited to a comedy that does not ask us to like its characters. We laughed at his interruptions because, even among performers demanding this much attention, he could still catch us off guard.

He began in stand-up, using rapid, aggressive delivery and an ill-fitting suit. *The Young Ones* brought him to prominence; *Alexei Sayle’s Stuff* (1988–91) later gave his writing and performance a series built around sketches and stand-up. *The All New Alexei Sayle Show* (1994–95) and *Alexei Sayle’s Merry-Go-Round* (1998) continued that move towards programmes bearing his own name. The format makes sense for someone whose monologues can take a comedy away from whatever it seemed to be doing.

The reason to return to *The Young Ones* is how often the words repay attention beneath the racket. Sayle writes alongside Rik Mayall, Lise Mayer and Ben Elton, giving performers lines that can withstand their appetite for exaggeration. The strongest jokes do not depend on being delivered outrageously, and it is worth listening for how sharp they are. The weaker passages push on after the point has landed, until the next escalation feels like an obligation. That is a shared weakness of the writing and performances, rather than Sayle’s alone.

His character acting extends into both comedy and drama. He plays Golodkin in *Gorky Park* (1983) and has a cameo as the Sultan in *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade* (1989). We recommend Steven Spielberg’s adventure for Harrison Ford and Sean Connery’s father-and-son friction, rather than as a substantial demonstration of Sayle’s work.

Start with *The Young Ones* for Sayle among collaborators who can match his appetite for disruption. Nigel Planer’s slower comic pace also makes clear why that company needs variety. Give the sharper lines their attention; a second episode need not follow immediately.

## Biography

Alexei Sayle is an English actor, stand-up comedian and writer. He was born Alexei David Sayle on 7 August 1952 in Anfield, Liverpool. He studied painting at Chelsea School of Art before becoming the first compère at the Comedy Store in London in 1979 and appearing in early alternative comedy shows.

Sayle played multiple members of the Balowski family and contributed additional material to the BBC series *The Young Ones* (1982–1984). He has appeared in films including *Gorky Park* (1983) and *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade* (1989), and on television in *Doctor Who* (1985) and *The Comic Strip Presents...* (from 1982).

He has written and starred in his own sketch and stand-up series such as *Alexei Sayle's Stuff* (1988–1991). Sayle has also published short story collections and novels, and released the single "'Ullo John! Gotta New Motor?" in 1984. He has been married to Linda Rawsthorn since 1974.
