> Alexis Bledel's gift is listening. For seven seasons of *Gilmore Girls* she stood still while Lauren Graham talked, and made the standing still matter; the darker television work that followed asked her to do the same thing without the jokes.

Watch what Alexis Bledel does when someone else has the line. In *Gilmore Girls* (2000) Lauren Graham's Lorelai talks at a speed that ought to flatten anyone sharing a frame with her, and Bledel's Rory does not compete. She waits, she takes it in, and then she answers in half the words. Rory is bookish, polite and a shade too good, and it is Bledel's stillness that stops her being a prig. When the two of them eat takeaway on the sofa, we found we were watching the daughter listen rather than the mother talk, and we did not expect that, because the mother has all the jokes.

The programme was her television debut, and it held her for 153 episodes, from 2000 to 2007. Films arrived alongside it: *Tuck Everlasting* (2002), her first lead on the big screen, *The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants* (2005), and a small part as Becky in *Sin City* (2005), a film we rated for Mickey Rourke and its hard black-and-white images and in which we found nothing particular to say about her. That is a fair measure of the early film work. The parts were mostly intelligent, introspective young women, close cousins of Rory, and most of the films did not get good notices.

Then the work got darker. Beth Dawes in *Mad Men* (2012) was the first adult part to get noticed. She went back to Rory in *Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life* (2016), and from 2017 to 2022 played Emily, called Ofglen, in *The Handmaid's Tale*, a part built largely on what a face does when its owner is not allowed to speak. Critics who had filed her under wholesome noticed the wordless stretches and said so. We have not reviewed either series and will not pretend to a verdict; what the career shows is that the thing she was doing on that sofa, listening and letting her face do the answering, carries into a dystopia intact.

Whether it carries anywhere else is the open question. Her best work has come inside long-running ensembles, where a writer can spend years building a room around her manner; Amy Sherman-Palladino wrote Rory to fit it, and Graham is the partner who gives her the most to listen to. Films that need her to carry a scene on her own have been less kind, and she has taken fewer parts since leaving *The Handmaid's Tale*. Bledel has never been an actor who fills the screen. She is one who lets you notice her, and that needs a room quiet enough for it to work.

She has appeared in recurring roles in *Mad Men* (2012) and *The Handmaid's Tale* (2017–2025) as Emily Malek, for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
