## Biography

Alfred Junge (29 January 1886 – 16 July 1964) was a German-born production designer and art director who spent much of his career in the British film industry.

He began in theatre in Germany before moving to film at UFA studios in Berlin in the early 1920s. He relocated to Britain in the late 1920s, working at British International Pictures and later heading the art department at Gaumont-British under Michael Balcon. He collaborated extensively with Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger on films including *The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp* (1943), *I Know Where I'm Going!* (1945), *A Matter of Life and Death* (1946) and *Black Narcissus* (1947), for which he received an Academy Award for Best Art Direction (Colour). Other credits include art direction on Alfred Hitchcock films such as *The Man Who Knew Too Much* (1934) and *Young and Innocent* (1937), and later MGM-British productions including *Ivanhoe* (1952) and *Mogambo* (1953).
