## Biography

Alfred Newman was an American composer, arranger and conductor of film music. He composed the score for *Wuthering Heights* (1939) and worked on more than 200 motion pictures over a career spanning four decades.

Newman began as a music prodigy and spent ten years on Broadway before moving to Hollywood in 1930. He served as head of the music department at 20th Century Fox from 1940 to 1960 and composed the studio's fanfare. Among his notable scores are those for *All About Eve* (1950), *How Green Was My Valley* (1941), *The Grapes of Wrath* (1940), *How the West Was Won* (1962) and *Airport* (1970). He won nine Academy Awards and received 45 nominations in total.

Newman was also a respected conductor who arranged and conducted scores by George Gershwin, Charlie Chaplin and Irving Berlin, as well as music for many film adaptations of Broadway musicals.
