## Biography

Alfred Shaughnessy was an English scriptwriter, film director and producer. Born in London in 1916, he was educated at Summer Fields and Eton, and attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, before resigning his commission. After the Second World War he worked at Ealing Studios, where he began writing, producing and directing films and television dramas.

Shaughnessy is best known as script editor and a principal writer on the period drama series *Upstairs, Downstairs* (1971–1975), for which he wrote fifteen episodes and oversaw many more. He contributed scripts to other series including *The Saint* (1962) and *All Creatures Great and Small* (1978). He also wrote two autobiographies and several novels.
