## Biography

Alice Ghostley was an American actress and singer who worked in theatre, film and television. She was born Alice Margaret Ghostley on 14 August 1923 in Eve, Missouri, and died on 21 September 2007 in Studio City, California. She attended the University of Oklahoma but left to pursue a career in New York with her sister.

Ghostley made her Broadway debut in the revue *New Faces of 1952* and later won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in *The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window* (1964). Her film roles include Aunt Stephanie Crawford in *To Kill a Mockingbird* (1962), Mrs. Singleman in *The Graduate* (1967) and Mrs. Murdock in *Grease* (1978). On television she played Esmeralda on *Bewitched* (1969–1972) and Bernice Clifton on *Designing Women* (1986–1993).

In 1953 she married actor Felice Orlandi, who died in 2003.
