## Fi1m on Alice Krige

> Alice Krige can make a villain unsettling with little more than a steady gaze. We rate the conviction she brings to horror and science fiction, especially when she leaves room for wit.

Alice Krige can hold a gaze and let the threat register without much change of expression. Her Borg Queen in *Star Trek: First Contact* (1996) is a useful place to see how much that restraint can achieve. She brings seductiveness to the menace, giving the character something more to do than announce her importance. We were unsettled by that invitation to find a threatening figure attractive. It is a performance worth seeking out even for those with little patience for science fiction.

The two films that brought her wider attention in 1981 already suggest the kinds of parts that would recur. In Hugh Hudson’s *Chariots of Fire* (1981), she plays Sybil Gordon within a sports drama we admire for making its runners’ convictions worth caring about, despite the stately stretches. *Ghost Story* (1981) put her in supernatural horror. She continued in supporting parts across film and television, with period drama, horror and science fiction all recurring.

Jonathan Frakes’s *Star Trek: First Contact* gives her the strongest setting among the films we have reviewed. Brent Spiner’s curious, comically precise Data helps keep the questions about artificial intelligence from becoming a lecture. Krige, too, leaves room for wit, and that matters in a film with so much to explain. Newcomers still face hurried explanations and a crowded supporting cast; one good performance cannot clear all that away.

Later parts include the cult leader Christabella in *Silent Hill* (2006) and the witch Holda in *Gretel & Hansel* (2020). Both make understandable use of an actor who can give monstrous figures conviction. The reservation is about casting: once that intensity becomes familiar, there is a temptation to ask for it again rather than find something else for her to do. We would welcome more chances to see her without an ominous job description. For a good film that gives her a properly unsettling part, start with *Star Trek: First Contact*.

## Biography

Alice Krige is a South African actress. She was born on 28 June 1954 in Upington and studied at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, where she completed a BA and an honours degree in drama. She later trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Her first major film role was as Sybil Gordon in *Chariots of Fire* (1981). Krige is known for playing the Borg Queen in *Star Trek: First Contact* (1996); she reprised the role in the *Star Trek: Voyager* episode "Endgame" (2001) and provided the voice for the character in *Star Trek: Picard* (2023). She has appeared in numerous other films and television series, including *Silent Hill* (2006) and *Thor: The Dark World* (2013).

Krige married writer and director Paul Schoolman in 1988. In 2004 she received an honorary doctorate in literature from Rhodes University.
