## Fi1m on Alice Oseman

> Alice Oseman writes teenage life as it might go if everyone were a little kinder than they are, and adapts her own pages so faithfully that the drawings come with them. It is gentle, honest and slight, and she knows it.

When someone in *Heartstopper* falls a little further in love, a leaf or a scribble of lightning appears at the edge of the frame. Those marks come straight from Alice Oseman's own pages, and they tell you most of what you need to know about how she works. She wrote the graphic novels, she wrote every episode of the series, and she has decided that a story about queer teenagers can be kind almost all the way through. Nobody's parents throw anyone out. The worst thing that happens in the first two episodes is a boy failing to text back.

She started young. *Solitaire*, a novel, came out in 2014 and introduced characters she would return to; *Heartstopper* began as a webcomic in 2016, grew into graphic novels from 2018, and she adapted it herself for the 2022 series, which is unusual and shows. Between them came *Loveless* (2020), a novel about asexuality and aromanticism, subjects she keeps returning to. The whole project ended in 2026 with the film *Heartstopper Forever* and the final volume of the comic. "It's very strange," she said that year. "I've been working on Heartstopper for a decade, and it's weird to know it's finished."

Her strength is friendship. She writes it as the ground the romances stand on rather than the consolation prize, and her teenagers dress the way teenagers actually dress, in the same three things, and talk that way too. She folds anxiety and eating disorders into the story without stopping the story to explain them, at least in that first series, and Euros Lyn and Andy Newbery, directing, ration the animated flourishes so they stay a pleasure. Diana Olifirova and Simona Susnea light the school in soft, even daylight, and Adiescar Chase's score never once argues with a scene, which is the house style and also its limit.

The limit is conflict. Her villains are drawn with a thick pencil; the bully in *Heartstopper* says the cruel thing, gets glared at, and says it again the following episode. By the fifth episode we wanted something to go properly wrong, and nothing did, and we noticed we were still watching anyway, which is her particular trick and not one we entirely trust. The complaint that has followed her later work is that the lessons about mental health and identity start to crowd out the story, and that the concluding film narrows to the central couple and leaves the friends behind. We have not reviewed either, so we will not press it. But it is a fair worry about a writer whose best material has always been the friends.

Watch *Heartstopper* as it was meant to be watched, with someone young enough to need it or old enough to remember needing it. Then wait to see what Oseman writes when there is no comic to adapt from.
