Born Adelaida Yakovlevna Leventon on 3 June 1879 in Yalta, then part of the Russian Empire, she emigrated to the United States and became a naturalised citizen in 1927. She died in Los Angeles on 13 July 1945. She made her Broadway debut in 1906 and became a leading stage actress, particularly noted for her performances in plays by Henrik Ibsen. Nazimova entered films in 1916 with *War Brides* and went on to appear in and produce a number of silent pictures for Metro Pictures.
