## Biography

Allan Scott was an American screenwriter. Born in Arlington, New Jersey, he attended Amherst College and was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University. He began writing for the stage in New York before moving to Hollywood in the 1930s.

Scott wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for several Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals at RKO, including *Top Hat* (1935), *Roberta* (1935), *Follow the Fleet* (1936), *Swing Time* (1936), *Shall We Dance* (1937) and *Carefree* (1938). He later worked on films such as *The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.* (1953) and *Imitation of Life* (1959). He received an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of *So Proudly We Hail!* (1943).

Scott was the father of actress Pippa Scott and brother of producer and screenwriter Adrian Scott.
