## Fi1m on Allen Hughes

> Allen Hughes makes violence upsetting by showing how familiar it has become to the people committing it. We value that directness in *Menace II Society*, made with Albert Hughes, though the brothers sometimes press their point at the actors’ expense.

In *Menace II Society* (1993), the young men treat violence as something familiar, part of ordinary life. Allen and Albert Hughes stay close to them in Watts, Los Angeles, without making their behaviour easier to excuse. We were upset by these young men, particularly by how little they seemed prepared for beyond another act of violence. Tyrin Turner and Larenz Tate give us people to care about without requiring us to approve of them. The brothers are most persuasive when they let that discomfort stand rather than adding another demonstration of how violence repeats itself.

Lisa Rinzler’s cinematography keeps our attention on people and their immediate surroundings, while Penny Barrett’s production design makes those places feel inhabited rather than arranged for inspection. That directness is a substantial part of the film’s force. Tyger Williams’s screenplay follows aggression back into Caine’s childhood, but the writing and direction sometimes labour what we have already understood. Turner suggests feelings that the pace does not always allow him to develop. We wanted the brothers to stay with those less predictable responses for longer.

Allen typically directs actors on their joint projects, while Albert handles the camera and technical work. We should still be cautious about crediting either brother alone for the force of their debut. They moved from a Black Vietnam veteran’s return to civilian life in *Dead Presidents* (1995) to the period adaptation *From Hell* (2001). *The Book of Eli* (2010) took them into post-apocalyptic action. The settings changed considerably; our interest remains in what Allen can draw from the people within them.

His solo work includes *Broken City* (2013) and the documentaries *The Defiant Ones* (2017) and *Dear Mama* (2023). The later music-focused documentaries use conversational interviews and archive footage, returning to the hip-hop culture that informed his early work. That move interests us because listening to someone talk offers a chance to ease the pressure we felt in the debut. Start with *Menace II Society*, and watch Turner closely when the film threatens to hurry past him.
